FoV mod up at Nexus:

Static FOV - Plus No Camera Smoothing. Dampening

https://www.nexusmods.com/elex2/mods/16?tab=description

Camera is pulled back, floaty mouse movement removed. Seems to help.

Great mod, huge improvement. Went with the 70 FOV myself. Absurd that a modder had to do this, rather than PB just fixing the thing they never should have put in their game in the first place. Reeks of stubbornness more than laziness or inability.
Maybe it's a new recruitment strategy - release broken product, hire modders who fix your lazy shit.

Very happy about the quick fix after they fucked up their game with Patch 1. Now I can continue my playthrough this weekend.

I can't believe the combat is the jankiest it's ever been. How is this possible?

Haven't played it myself yet, but that promo/gameplay video PB released on YT a while back has shown combat to be just beyond-the-fucking-pale godawful, to the point it makes the original's janky, mediocre combat look like a masterpiece in comparison.

I was hoping that the video was captured using an older build of the game or something, but this post of yours confirms that combat is indeed, quite shit. :?

Sometimes during a fight it feels like you and the enemies just kinda flop around.

Eh, while it certainly doesn't look good, I would say that once I got used to the combat and understood how each attack, consecutive combo attack, and counter attack would behave with a given weapon type, I have felt myself to have good control and command of the combat. You're going to find yourself in those floppy moments if you don't realize how combos connect, don't pay enough attention to your stamina bar (as you just tend to stumble and flail while out of stamina), or are just spamming LMB. There is a certain rhythm to the combat despite what first impressions would imply.

That said, it's still PB combat, but I think it's easy to write off if you don't take a moment to slow down and learn the above. The biggest problems with it would be the animation quality and the possible cheese tactics discussed earlier in the thread, the later of which I don't utilize myself due to not feeling good and generally being annoying to execute.

FFS Patch 2 did not fix the issue introduced in Patch 1 with the Albs.

I escorted Skibor and accepted quest to talk to Irissa. Doing this with Patch 1 installed, Skibor got stuck at the Depot entrance and Irissa would only say "talk to me later". Now with the fix of Patch 2, Skibor respawns in the Outlaw camp but when talked to he doesn't offer to be escorted again. So it is only fixed for people who never did the Skibor escort quest prior to Patch 1. People who did it with Patch 1 installed are still fucked. The quest state thinks he's already at the Depot and Irissa still only says "talk to me later".

does that mean they fixed the camera?

The alternative camera setting increased FOV, pulls the camera back a bit, and keeps it fixed rather than dynamic. Still no free mousewheel zoom option, which is extremely stupid of them. It's very close to the FOV mod mentioned earlier in the thread, except the mod seems to be better in terms of snappier camera movement. I regret removing it to try out the new camera mode, in fact. Not that it's difficult to re-apply.

So yeah, it helps, and will definitely help people with motion sickness, but they should have just added the same exact camera as from ELEX 1, and the fact they didn't leaves me confused.

- combat.

Still not sure on this one. I think they could have iterated and improved on the combo system A LOT from ELEX 1, and probably should have stuck with it and done so. Not sure it's overall better in its original form than what we've got here though, especially now that I've played around with it more.

The standard camera is wonky and the standard FOV is also way too low for melee combat.

Not to mention that melee combat has been also been "Bethesda-ized" to make it idiot proof. You literally just spam the attack button until enemies fall over. Enemies also barely ever dodge and never block or parry, but sometimes they will just run around in circles instead of directly engaging the player... It is weird.

It sucks, but I honestly can't blame PB or THQ Nordic, as the number one complaint of ELEX was the melee combat. So they "fixed" it by dumbing it down, and the result is that ELEX 2 has a positive rating of 77 Percent, despite the awful camera and lackluster performance. That is higher rating than ELEX 1 ever had...

All said, I really miss Risen 1 combat.

Are you playing on Ultra? Why isn't this the case for me, I wonder? If I ty this, I end up getting murdered in a couple hits mid attack, unless it's a really low-level enemy. I'm about 10 hours in at level 11. Maybe it gets worse later in the game?

Yes, I am playing on Ultra.

You should obviously dodge when enemies start their attack sequence, especially when you are at a lower level. Other than that you just spam the attack button.

Small tip: Definitely buy good armor, as the armor you can find is usually not very good.

I mean, I'm not having a terribly hard time on Ultra. I just don't feel like I could get away with spamming the attack button endlessly. Now that you've clarified there's dodging involved, yeah, I can see what you mean. Like I've said in prior posts, I rarely use the roll dodge and rely on parrying, and move normally to avoid attacks otherwise.

I agree they shouldn't have gone this route with the combat, but don't seem to recall the combo system from ELEX 1 as fondly as others. It was decent, but mostly just succeeded in limiting the player's available inputs-in-a-row by one or two more than ELEX II's does. In that way, it's a bit better than the current system, but stamina in this has served to present similar input limitations for me. I think they could have probably struck a bit of a better balance between the two systems. Or, you know, brought back something closer to Risen 1's combat.

EDIT: I should also mention that I don't travel with companions. I'm strictly lone wolf all the way unless it's a companion quest.

Anyone got any tips for where to go at low level? I'm not strong enough to take on the first patrol you get a quest to spy on (then get forced to engage at close range because of a cut scene ffs) but I do at least have Caja with me which helps massively.

I'm hoarding all my elexit and I want to train up something useful.
