dat weird feeling when you meet ray after 60 hours of playing and go 'o hey its the goy that stole my starter gear' :shittydog:

Also, another random thought about starting weakness and relative enemy hp bloat:

I think people who complain that they can't "go anywhere" before level whatever because they get eaten alive by munsters severely underestimate the power of tactical monster infighting. Given the typical density of enemies, with raptors, biters and hornwolves being all close by in Edan at the start, you can usually lure them into huge battle royales that leave only one battered munster standing.

I think even that the supershitty XP gains of the bottom of the barrel enemies (critters, rats, biters) are supposed to be a hint at this. "Killing these is not worth your time, better have them all kill each other instead". However, if that was the idea behind it, then the game really fails to communicate it properly, since I remember I'd try as much as possible to get last hits on even the shittiest things so as to not miss out on XP at the start as well, which was also probably magnified by not knowing that stuff respawns.

I don't think luring monsterfights is the 'meant to be how you play' thing, but it certainly is a time honoured tactic.

I mean, given that I'd leave half the enemies standing wherever I go, and then only fight the respawned ones that are really in the way, I don't think I ever killed more enemies than there are enemies in the world at start. I really don't think you need to grind, given quests can get you to competitive levels then once you get to ~20 you're set.

I thought as long as you land a hit at anytime, you are guaranteed to get experience.

Edit:
Yeah, nvm.
Avoid strong monsters. The beasts with a skull icon next to their name are impossible to defeat at a current experience level, however, you should pay attention to every single opponent. If you do not feel strong enough, you can use the jetpack and leave the battlefield. It is also a good idea to lure a monster to the nearby friendly characters - they will probably handle the problem, however, you have to remember you will not earn any experience points. It is also possible to provoke a fight between e.g. bandits and beasts. What is worth noticing, the main tracks are less filled with monsters, however, you will fewer less valuable items there. Link

Its kinda weird, I thought I got exp when I was running from monsters and got across wandering Clerics that attacked the monsters.

Interesting how to upgrade your zerker swords, you need pieces exactly from all types of chimeras in the world - and I don't remember seeing them on traders. You need black leather if you want a fire sword, so you have to defeat ones in Eden; only ones with little bat ears drop ears you want for poison weapon, and I think there's some other ingredient for an ice sword. Right, a troll heart (sadly, not exactly Ice Troll heart which would make all kinds of sense).

That would mean that any Paladin-ranked zerker in the game had to personally defeat some sort of chimera to forge his weapon (or a troll) and have 2 points in Trophies as well.

A cool little twist... but is completely missing from game's narrative. I don't believe anyone ever tells you anything about monsters in the game at all. There are quests to kill some of them, but it's not like they are any part of actual game narrative or lore.

And that's the only meaningful character progression / game world interaction I really found in the character system.

^ You are right, and it's really disappointing since one of the first things you encounter in Gothic 1 (after getting Bulleted) are the two rogues who are hunting and explain how scavengers attack.

That aspect, in game characters explaining how in game shit functions using non 4-th wall breaking language, call it immersion or whatever you want, is missing and the hole it leaves is felt quite drastically. Really, they have plenty of characters that would easily fill those roles as well. Duras for combat, Geron for hunting, etc.

Good grief, even the second-tier Plasma Rifle with One With The Weapon spell is a goddamn murder machine. I don't remember any of the Gothic games having a power curve this exponential, where simply getting the +1 version of your current weapon gives you this much extra killing power. I don't know in detail how the armor system works, i.e. whether it's simple subtraction or something else, but that might be the reason why.

What's interesting is that many people have criticized what they call HP bloat, but I think the problem is the other way around -- things have low HP but high armor. This means that once you pass the damage threshold, shit dies very easily.

Players wouldn't complain about that if the game had provided any information on how armor works, how combat works, and how attribute works.
In this case, I wouldn't blame the player, it's totally the developer's fault for not providing adequate information.

Hm, level 12 now, got a nice Fire Warhammer II, that could be found just outside Goliet, and can kill most stuff with Caja... provided I can avoid being one-shotted (a lot of enemies still do that).
I think that for a melee-centric build Strenght + Con and axes/hammers is the way to go early on. A lot of people seem to look at the swords and go for Str + Dex (which admittedly helps with ranged combat and Animal Trophies), but meanwhile with some Elex pots I could use a rather heavy-hitting Energy Dual Hammer I (54 damage I think) at level 7 or 8 (and kill trolls in melee with enough care).
Also helps to get the very useful Good Eater, Stamina and Armor perks early.

Guess it will be time to join a faction and get some armor at last. Cleric armor just seems too cool to pass up. Kinda like their skills like phasing and hologram also. Berserker melee boost is da bomb and armor buff would help (clerics get it as well), but the rest seems pretty meh. Outlaws? No, thank you. I hoard consumables, not manufacture or use them. To add insult to injury, 2H axe combos are bugged.
Still, maybe need to do some Ragnar quests for the xp before committing to the Clerics .

CON synergies very poorly with best skills, including combat. Overall stat reqs on CON weapons also mean you basically either level up that or actual combat skills for extra damage. I think their overall stat split also means more investment in stats, compared to say 2 handed swords.

Melee Combat? You can pick I along with Animal Trophies I early anyway I guess. II and III? I'm not seeing myself getting III anyway, unless on a cold-dedicated playtrough. II is +10% and would be nice to have. But I'll rather use a much better weapon earlier, thank you. I probably will pick it anyway - as one of the last perks I get. Once I have levelled Str, Con, Int and Cun enough to get the other skills. I also delay Jet Pack attack, but it's a tradeoff. Con synergises nicely with some good Survival skills and some Cleric skills plus with Parry Strenght (stagger resistance/less Stamina burn when being hit).

Regarding the overall attribute cost, it's possible that it's slightly lower for end-game swords. However it's not nearly as bad as one might think considering that you can get up to +15 Strenght with jewelry (and +10 easily). Plus if you want to wield two-handed swords, the only option for end-game weapons are the Berserkers, which aren't my primary choice.

Thing is you can also get +DEX jewelry, for total +10 STR & 10 DEX / +5 STR/DEX (I think, rings give +10 and amulets +5). But there is no CON jewelry.

You can find two two-handed swords II + effects (poison and fire iirc) somewhere in Ignadon, I think in the south around the quest chimeras.

That's nice and it can carry you trough the game easily I guess.
But eventually you may want to upgrade to a Tier III weapon. And if you also want an Enchantment! then Berserkers are your only option for greatswords.

1-handing one-handed sword without a shield might actually be most damaging combo anyway.

And while clerics don't get viking melee spell or easy drugs, they do get shield spell and phantom spell which creates decoy after every roll, which makes melee even more trivial for them than for vikings in my opinion (because ghostwolf friggin sucks). Also Energy DoT seems to work on everything while poison/fire are different.

That faction just gets everything lol.

Sure, it's a fine playstyle if you prefer that. But it's not enough "Poise" damage (two-handers have a +75 modifier), radius or reach for my taste.

Don't forget Last Stand doubling your HP literally.
And Outlaws having access to Melee Atk Speed AND Double Damage chems.
Berserkers gets to shit in the woods.

Yes, you can. But highest Dex requirement for Two-handers is 61, so you don't need it for huge savings on attribute points. Still can be helpful, depending on your build.

+75 poise, it was in that only guy caring about Elex enough to make combat videos video.

Personally, I don't feel that much and think poise damage is overrated (if it even fucking works). However, playing with 2 hander is indeed more rewarding due to ability to grab more enemies into damage arc sometimes. Sadly terrible controls even when unlocked do not allow to use that very often. It does have a bit more reach though, allowing to begin attack while enemy closing in and stun enemy before their attack.
