It would have been embarrassingly convenient to play on a handheld dammit why no western release :argh:

ghostlight brought PC over right? I'd like to think just bringing over the PC script would be enough to have it finished, I'd imagine it comes down to footing the bill for an e-shop release. there are some slightly hardcore folks who'd play it tho (monhun 4 leftovers), they should take the chance!

afaik, 3ds version differs from PC, which is in its turn more like a PSP port.

The complete lack of control over which stats you get when leveling up and the extremely random nature of stat gains make this game seem more like a slot machine simulator than an RPG to me.

Yeah, that goes for a lot of dungeon crawlers in ye olde days. Bards Tale had random stat gains (but at least they were gains) and in some Wizardry games your stats could go down as well as up. Happy with 18Str? Unlucky dude, you've just gained a level and gone down to 17Str.

I like random stat gains to an extent, not such a fan of stat reductions on level up (although they could occassionally benefit you...)/

I guess this shit is not for me then. Not being able to manually level up your chars and get the stats and skills you want in an RPG (especially a combat-focused one) just kills most of the fun for me. Even Blizzard, who are so terrified of allowing their players to fuck up with character building that they have removed it completely from their newer games, let you pick an occasional spell in World of Warcraft. Maybe I wouldn't mind it too much if it the random ranges weren't so ridiculous, I mean you can randomly get from 1 to like 40 hp when leveling up, fuck that lottery simulator.

I've watched concern over the stat thing get brought up a lot, and it is an unusual mechanic since declining attributes are fairly archaic in cRPGs. However, it needs to be understood that for the purposes of building viable characters in EG, the statistic loss or gain on level up, is not that crucial. They are primarily a gateway to unlocking the more specialty classes, and even once you change classes, a character's stats are reset. (Even below the numbers needed to qualify for said class!) This is a huge game where if you play to the end, you will be gaining hundreds of levels. The characters will all have maxed out stats, and there are frequent items later on that you can use to raise an ability score if you need it.

The most decisive factor in how well a character performs is simply Level, and the corresponding Power Up percentages. A 50th level fighter is going to out-damage a lower level character regardless if strength is 16 or 18. The same goes for mages, it can be effective to keep a single class wizard all the way through just to see them grow more powerful in dealing damage. The numeric value assigned to intelligence doesn't matter.

objectively you are right, in the long term it feels like stat decrease isn't a big deal. Subjectively it is a big slap in the face tho.

Ghostlight LTD - Petition To Translate All Elminage Games

Fluent started a petition to get more Elminage Games to the PC.

https://www.change.org/p/ghostlight-games-translate-all-elminage-games

Hello everyone!

A few days ago I created an online petition aimed at Ghostlight Games. I wanted to see how much interest there was in the Elminage series of games, and I urged Ghostlight to translate all of the Elminage games, old and new.

Why does it matter? Well, I happen to think that Elminage is sort of a modern day Wizardry game. It is closely modeled after the first few Wizardry games, but unfortunately, most of the series remains in Japanese.
Ghostlight has translated Elminage Gothic and released it on PC, so there is hope that they can translate the other games in the series going forward.

Please sign this petition and show Ghostlight that you care about these games. If enough people sign, I'm sure Ghostlight would consider translating the games and releasing them on PC for all of us dungeon-crawler RPG fans to enjoy.

It is not a bug... that is the challenge of this dungeon. I just completed the Ibag tower last weekend. Found it pretty brutal, but was quite satisfying to finish.

Without going into spoilers, there is a feature you will find that slightly helps with navigating the dungeon. But you won't be using teleport.

Spoil please.

Also i can get _out_ by cleric spell. But getting back in to lvl 15 for example will take forever..

Yes, the cleric spell Honey Restorer will get you back to the castle any time, so you don't have to worry about your way out. However...

There is an elevator spaced out every 5 floors, beginning with the room on the first level. You have to activate it, and then find the elevator rooms on the other levels. They also have to be activated (pushing a button in a different location on the map) before they can be used. But then you can travel to the higher floors, 5, 10, and 15.

You can also carry a dove's bell item and activate it on floors you have already cleared out, if you don't want to trudge through the combat all over again.

Great, an Elminage thread.

For those curious about the differences between the Gothic version Ghostlight ported and Gothic 3DS Remix, there's various minor additions and fixes such as being able to donate at the temple for EXP, added (item) art, and actually interesting things to steal from enemies (they ''forgot'' that in the first version). There's also the huge amount of customization which Elminage is known for, which again was left out of the port.

While it's great that we're even getting some of these games in the west, they're doing a pretty poor job at it. Take the horrendous Elminage Original translation for example (was eventually fixed through a patch).

Saw this was on sale and got it.

I don't understand character creation and the manual (which is for some reason in black and white despite never being released physically. Why?) is no help. I assume each class has different growth rates and equips, but there isn't any help on that.

edit: And I've already fucked up! I took the skill that boosted magic on anyone who would cast spells. Turns out it only effects elemental spells.

Spirit Contract? It's meant to supplement mages, not other spell casters as you found out. Most damage spells are fire, ice or lightning based. Priests have a separate skill that boosts their healing magic.

so i just arrived at Igdra Underground Church and it was 2spooky4me so...

I just finished 6 straight hours of grinding in the B3 monster-hole of Tsun-Kun cavern (the fight that gives 4-5k xp and is really easy/repeatable). my party is now super over-leveled or rather, they're at the level they SHOULD BE GODDAMNIT, heh.

level 17 samurai, level 24 fighter, level 13 ninja (the demon-kid), level 14 bishop, level 25 mage and level 22 alchemist :)

at first i thought the lack of a dedicated cleric would really hurt me but you know what, the name of the game is MAGE NUKES AHOY. samurai spamming maglass/agrisse along with the bishop and the mage doing the same (or better) pretty much ends any fight in 1 turn, and the alchemist's breath spell is ridiculously good as well. in fact, it's actually the goddamn ninja that seems to be dead weight; thinking of changing him to a samurai (more mage nuking wee), and eventually want to change the fighter to lord.

thinking of coding a keyboard macro so i can leave the computer farming the monster-hole in tsun-kun cavern b3 while i'm out of the house. :gameplay:

Jesus. Six hours in the hole.

In the lowest level of the church there's a corridor full of set encounters. Among the possible encounters are lesser demons, which only perform weak attacks and summon more buddies very frequently. They're ideal for grinding. If you had spent a similar amount of time with them, you'd have gotten millions of exp.

Keep in mind that nuking is not going to last you forever, and soon enough resistant/reflecting enemies will start showing up that you'll be forced to to melee. Keep your ninja. The further along you go, the more useful beheading gets, and you need a thief anyway. Consider banking your alchemist later on to swap in only for blacksmithing, and teaching one of the others alchemy spells to compensate. You might want a Summoner that can also cast other spell schools, since there are many powerful creatures to recruit and a seventh party member is invaluable. As far as melee classes go, Valkyrie is extremely strong in this game, because of the prevalence of powerful spears and ability to dual wield them.
