I bought the game back in October (?) when it first went EA. Is that functionally the same as a pre-order?
Unfortunately Nope. The main reason to add these items is that we promised them to all who were support us on Kickstarter or made pre-order. And the best way to deliver them via DLC keys. And ofc it's a good opportunity for all who didn't get a chance to support the game early but want to do it now.

Not a fan of the reworked prologue, I think Magellan fit the game world much better than the new area.

Plus, it would be really interesting to
see other's reactions to you surviving Nashville. The couple of Black Wings returning to Magellan from an expedition, the White scientist, the Blue Wing girl that you can have a relationship with, and all the others that you help / interact with. It's something that's lost if you put the prologue / pre-timeskip part in such a barren area.

Ok so they ake that announcment that they introduced PSI so I thought hey why not. Made my very first character from Orange Wing, kinda criminal mastermind psion, and my very first combat in the gas station and the fucker is completely immune to PSI damage. What. The. Actual. Fuck. Why? And the enemy is level 5. Seriously? Crap gear, nothing to craft or salvage, no clever workaround, just straight combat with my best weapon dealing no damage. Who designed this?

Ok after restarting my Thief/Psy operative/prisoner 4 times I got the hang of it. The big initial mistake was to dump perception, and muscle due to crippling carry weight problems, too much. Perception affects ALL ranged combat, including psy. My mistake was to think that Psychic stat governs everything related to psy but perception is not a dump stat even for psy characters and with 2 perception your effective range is close instead of medium/long. That also affected my High Tech Weapon skill which I need for enemies immune to psychic damage, so much in fact that even with 50+ skill I could barely hit it from beyond 2 fields. Still bummed that it was completely immune to psychic damage but at least now I found a workable build with a little compromise.
Also Deftness stat below 6 is a bad idea, though unlike Fallout I do not feel the need to go all out on it, though less than 6 does not feel good during combat with psy and high tech pistol "Kraut" so far.
Now I have to wonder whether you get the occasional attribute bonus or not. Up to level 4 nothing in sight so far.

Big problem this game has is that a lot of things are not explained directly from tooltips for the stats, skills and abilities but only indirectly by adjusting stats when you change them. Some perks do not give you any information whatsoever what they actually do, like the Sun Tzu perk.

Encased forums one of the first threads:
"Silver Wing useless?
So, unless I add Hacking, Lockpick, Combat, Engineering there is no way to proceed even through Nashville with a character focussed on Conversation etc. Or am I missing something? If I HAVE to pick the same skills all the time choosing a different template at the start becomes kina uselss I feel. Also, with the almost complete removal of the start chapter, ending up at Nashville I am barely L2... while there are still all those enemies around I cannot circumvent."

You literally get an auto lockpick in the very first starter area which lets you automatically bypass locks though it breaks down fast. Nashville with a little rummaging around gives you 2! Hacking Software items which automatically lets you bypass any hacking attempt, though again breaks down fast so use it sparingly.
Yeah you can tag Speechcraft and Leadership AND MAYBE USE THE THIRD FOR A COMBAT SKILL DUMBFUCK? With 5 to intitiative and huge money bonus you can outfit your Silver better than any other character.

That encounter was definitely frustrating, not in the least because of the changes in the initial location. Before the recent overhaul, you would be able to get better items (where did the backpacks go?) and higher level. This guy would always kill my Lvl 2 character with just two hits. Also hit points seem to be static now (I don't see a change when leveling) ?!

After numerous tries, I did manage to take out this enemy. My wimpy White Wing smart-ass used the immolation mode of the basic energy weapon and then fled upstairs. After drinking a coffee or energy drink something (not sure what I used), I re-entered combat. At the start of combat, the enemy got hit first with 14 of 15 damage from immolation and I had 2 additional action points from whatever I drank (bringing the total to 10AP). Next I had the initiative, and shot this thing 3 times with my energy pistol (total 9 AP) which was sufficient to eliminate the target.

Note that it seems that you really need to kill this enemy in one turn, because the toxic clouds that litter the cellar just heal this guy.

Sykar Any comparison to Underrail?

Not a lot to compare outside of both being in some sort of post apocalyptic setting. Encased is much closer to Fallout, skill system with 3 tag skills which raise double as fast as non-tagged, attributes which are close to Fallout where Brains=Intelligence gives you more skill points and better starting values in skills like science and technology. Deftness = Agility where every two points give you an extra AP, with a base starting value of 5. You seem to get a perk once at level 2 and every 3 level after from what I can see. Another example would be Muscle=Strength which determines HP and melee damage. Perception gives bonus to hit for all ranged combat and initiative, Luck affects crit chance and gambling, Guts=Endurance and lastly Charisma stat should be self-explanatory. Unlike in either game you join as one of 5 factions of the main company invested in the area you will be exploring.
There does not seem to be aimed shots in the game, at least not like in Fallout, though I have seen a special ability called "Head shot" on a temporary NPC I had to escort. This is also a difference to Underrail and closer to Fallout, you can have companions. Unlike in Fallout you have full control during combat over them.
The story is very different and it seems to involve time travel among other things. So far I came across mutated giant roaches and "devolved" humans. One of the first locations is called "Roadside Picnic" iirc and the reference should be obvious. It has some elements from Stalker games, where weird anomalies occur and you can trigger those via throwing bolts into them. Something unique is that you are encouraged to scan certain alien objects, phenomenon, enemies, etc. which gives you some experience
The game is Early Access so it is very unfinished. A lot of animations feel janky, music sometimes is missing, crashes are not frequent but do happen. Maps feel somewhat empty at that stage ue to the fact that they are not that populated atm. I think there is currently a bug which prevents you from random encounters with enemies, all of the random encounters are traders and it is sadly always the same map though very different traders at least.

Would you say the potential is there?

I put my vote in as well for "tons of potential" though it does need quite an awful lot of polish. That said, it's early access and this is the one time I'll refrain from talking about polish. My first complaint, strangely enough, is "Goddammit the walking sound is absolutely ear-crushingly awful!"

EDIT: lol waitaminute waitaminute. Am I missing something? I'm in the sewers near the gas station and I can't use my gun or my psi abilities on the enemy? I don't...what???

EDIT pt2. It was a bug. Man...that's a helluva bug.

Happy new year, employees!

Thank you for being with us. Happy New Year!

Today is December 31. Tomorrow the new year will begin, which means it's time to sum up the previous one.

2019 was full of events not only for us, but for the whole Encased community. This year we showed players the first alpha, went from one floor of Magellan to a new prologue and dozens of random encounters. Players were finally able to get to know the world of the game after the Incident, hire companions and use psi abilities. We received a lot of feedback, bug reports and, of course, warm words of support from our players.

A lot has happened this year: early access, release of the first content patch and victory in the Best Desktop Game category at DevGamm Minsk.

It was a good year, but it's over and we're moving on. In the new 2020 you'll see massive content-patches, improvements in gameplay and graphics, and, of course, the full Encased release.

Thank you for being with us. Happy New Year!

Hotfixes since the release of the first content update:

Soundtrack:

Encased soundtrack will take you on a long and atmospheric journey of a lifeless wasteland, cut off from the outside world by an impassable dome.

The soundtrack was mostly created by Vasily Mushroomer Kashnikov (LP album 2017-2019), but it also includes the Encased Kickstarter Orchestral track and its jazz version.
