I will stay in retail at least till I get SHADOW as pet. Anyway, learned ignite bones. After casting it, the enemy becomes a skeleton. If I use illusion can I access places where I would be killed on sight by being a necromancer?
Illusion spells will effect your faction depending on the illusion. The god you worship plays a role in faction so being the right race might not be enough for some places.

I remember playing this after Shadows of Luclin came out. I started with an inky necro and abandoned him after finding out that on raids I'd be a battery for clerics. The other character I had was a high elf bard. The first was named FenrilLikesDaDead and the other was RapstaSupastar.

You'll get the Spectre pet at 59 although it's not much stronger than the usual pets at first. Then at 60 you get to look like that yourself, in Arch Lich form! And then at 61 you get an upgraded Spectre pet and that one is pretty badass. You also get some good skeletons before that too. One of them is a Rogue that can backstab, so if you use Dooming Darkness to slow a mob and then fear it, it runs away slowly and your Rogue pet can backstab the hell out of it :D That's at 53. And then a few levels more you get the Monk skeleton which is really cool too. He is tankier and does martial arts.

And yeah illusions change the way characters react. It usually doesn't make them into true allies but if you are hated in a town and get an illusion it can let you go and trade safely. They probably just look at you "dubiously" or "indifferently" instead of attacking.

this makes me wanna play Necro too. i'm still not sure if i wanna play more because soloing is so biring, but i can see this game become super fun in group. btw rolled magician because i wanted a pet class, but apparently i should have gone necro, since it seems has cooler pets

Religion is a trick, always roll agnostic for the best faction standings.
Unless you're a bard, in which case you should pick Veeshan because bards are the only class that can actually worship Veeshan.

Magician pets are extremely better than necro. Necro pets only looks cooler.

IF I ever play P99 considering the extremely slow mana regen, I would play as an magician cuz I can send my pet to attack and that is it. Necros needs to constantly cast spells to make his minions useful. Also, necros are hated by almost everyone, you will be KoS(killed on sight) in many towns. Magicians also can conjure weapons for his pets, while necros needs to spend money to arm his pets. And if they die, you lose everything. What makes necros great is their DoTs and ability to trade hp for mana, in therms of pet, is Magicians > Necromancers.

You should at least learn how to play in the retail server during tutorial. You would't be missing anything extremely important except few items...

You have to do over 50% of the damage or you get no XP and the corpse goes poof. You can't just let your pet fight for you. Mages suck. They mostly exist as mana batteries on raids.

Yeah, but Necro + Mage duo is really awesome stuff. You can fill in the gaps quite nicely (Mage summons weapons for the necro pets, necro can feed MP to the Mage etc.). But if you're not married to the pet class, I think Druid is still the best solo class.

So I'm looking at Imperium-EQ. They say it's for solo/duo play and that is intriguing to say the least. They let you play up till Omens of War expansion. Would anyone be interested in playing it together?

Does the familiar affects anything or is just cosmetic?

Other question. Any way to buy membership via STEAM?
I don't have international credit card and loved this game. I wanna become a member but sadly I can't cuz I can't pay from my current country. IF I use /marketplace everything is sold in "funds" which I can buy via steam, except membership. The price is in USD and no way to buy it from steam.

Can I just buy the expansions and AA cap increase and have all advantages of membership?

Different pets have different stats and abilities. The earth pet has root and the most hp. That's what you generally use for solo play. Fire pet has the most damage and gets a proc. Air pet can stun. Fire and air are for grouping.

I thought they stopped that bullshit ages ago. Don't you just need to tag it with some damage to get the kill?

20~30 minutes and I can't use my pets to kill... OMG. That is insane.

Anyway, when you reach lv 44 without casting a single evocation spell and decide to try ignite bones

It is a group based game after all. You aren't really meant to solo. Especially not as a wizard. I've done it as a wizard and had plenty of fun anyway though. You can always pay an enchanter for clarity, which gives mana regen.

I'm also basing this number on my wizard who has well over 200 int. His gear is sick
