I'm just not convinced the games sell more because they're generic fantasy. I mean CoD sells more than any RPG, doesn't that suggest modern times are where the money's at?

Well I think if anyone made a contemporary FP ARPG with action similar to COD/BF3 except with open world, free exploration, an actual story and characters to interact with, and run the same kind of PR & marketing bombardment, it would likely sell around similar numbers. And I could use a break from the fantasy for once, even if for another AAA shitboring game. Also, Far Cry 3, as I understand, is somewhat like this and it is selling well, no?

This pretty much.

Every aspect of setting is designed with an eye toward profit and mass-market. Mass Effect might be sci-fi but it's got a high soldier focus, most planets look like Earth, etc. The stuff they used to make Skyrim look a little more alien was all standard shit, mammoths and giants and dragons. It's carefully designed not to be "too weird" and to appeal to teenage males and their expectations for fiction and setting.

You mean "what if Boiling Point: Road to Hell didn't suck"?

That sucked big time, though.

If Activision stopped fucking around with 2-hour long bombastic retarded games and turned it into an open world game, they likely would hit the jackspot. Attention to detail in COD games is fucking insane. Their art direction is quality stuff. Though it might be because they focus on small levels but the team behind those games know what they are doing. They are just stuck into a shit grinder which is pathetic.

Man, I played the shit outta Boiling Point (though I never actually finished it). It was fun. I liked the PC's voice actor.

Generic fantasy/modern/whatever could be considered low risk decision, as something that's pretty much guaranteed to sell to the casual masses ("I loved Salvatore as a kid, and this game has orcs, and elves, and dragons! Must BUY!"). Which is a big factor in such high-risk enterprise with massive sunk costs as AAA game development.

Not entirely.

http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1442771-i-genuinely-hate-fallout-3/

If playing New Vegas made you hate Fallout 3... I can only imagine how much you would hate it once you give Fallout and Fallout 2 ago

-The story is terrible. Talk to the civilians of Megaton. One old lady in particular will tell you the town's history, and it makes no [censored] sense. Likewise, Tenpenny residents are rich. Ok, how? Like to be rich, they either have to provide the wasteland with a service OR they have to happen across a bottlecap factory or the like. If they provided services, why are the wastes still in such horrendous shape? Where are the fruits of their labor? Are we to believe every single one of them found a bottlecap factory? And why do they pay rent to Tenpenny? Why not just kill him off or kick him out? He's siphoning all their caps to himself, presumably for services they all benefit from and ammo for his stupid hobby. Cut him out of the picture and EVERYONE benefits, and yet they don't. Ideally, given the scenario, Tenpenny should be communist. Why not just put all their caps together into one pool and use the caps to make sure all of them are able to get food and water and live out comfortable lives until they die, with the guards offering their services in exchange for food, water and shelter. When they pay Tenpenny, it just means that everyone there is on a "time limit" and the day they can't pay Tenpenny is the day they're screwed. But this also is NOT beneficial to Tenpenny tower to lose a resident because then it means it has less income to buy food and water with. But no, let's pay rent to a guy that buys truckloads of .308 ammo and pays shady characters to blow up communities and higher hitmen on Vault dwellers instead of taking our payments and wisely saving them up for food and water for our residents. Meanwhile we have super mutants that capture humans. Why? "Cuz."
Oh and Little Lamplight. 'Nuff said.

...compared with...

it's good to have some one on the other side to talk to that fills the opposite of what i do. I like fallout 3 over New Vegas, New Vegas for me was filled with glitches; but so was fall out 3. one of the biggest problem with fallout New Vegas was the Karma system. i don't like the full on Fraction Karma, i think it is dumb that you get hated by other for helping a another side. in addition, i had a bad...... Head spin issue with AI's that was funny/weird Really Bethesda?. also i had a problem with vats screwing up but i mostly do not like the story of New Vegas, i think fallout 3 was thrilling. the DLC's were better too. but what matter's in the long run is were all fallout fans, and we are hoping right now in Bethesda Studios there taking a break from skyrim and working on a new one!
