Even playing JRPGs how they are intended they are piss easy.
This is a gross generalization, but even so, why do you play them then, if this is how you view the genre in its entirety?
I don't.
But as I said I love to get stronger and overpower the game IF I WANT TO. In most of JRPGs I can do that.
I hate this fake block they put in just because they are so afraid you might break the game and make already easy game even more easier. Let people decide themselves if they wanna overlevel ffs. If I feel like I want a challenge I just escape more battles or use worse equipment.
I hate the baby difficulty in pretty much all JRPGs, give me Hard Mode like SMT Nocturne or Digital Devil Saga, at least I need to use my brain a little bit then.
I mean I replayed FFX this year and holy fuck, the balancing is braindead. Literally braindead for toddlers, it only picks up in the last 1/4 of the game.

I'm going to assume it's unchanged from the Apple Arcade behavior.

In that version, leveling is pretty quick if you're underleveled, but then there is an aggressive level capping system.

Basically, you're rarely going to be at a level different than the 'recommended' level for the game. Most difficulty you'll encounter in the game is from poor planning or not understanding a bosses 'puzzle' mechanics, not from being underleveled.

Fighting random battles usually ends up being moreso to farm chest keys and materials rather than leveling up.

That all said: no, the enemies don't really get stronger as you level up.

They made some changes to the game which make grinding less productive. (This does not mean there’s no grinding! More on that later.) There’s a soft level cap, which basically prevents leveling up from fighting enemies below your current level. In order to keep leveling up, you need to fight harder enemies, not just more enemies. But the harder enemies are gated behind the next boss, so you can’t simply grind levels to beat a challenging boss. The only way to beat them is to figure out their attack patterns and weakness, which is never quite as simple as just ice on fire.

Character Max Level

So I can confirm that the characters max level is 99. Leo just hit it and it shows max level. Just FYI.

Honestly any levels after 65 are pointless. Your attack, defense, and mp MIGHT go up 1 point per level, and your hp might go up 30 points.

Even in NG+? I thought monster levels would increase. Still haven’t defeated the Tri-stars but I’m hoping NG+ will provide some new challenges

Monster levels do go up and exp gains skyrocket, but you still only get extremely low stat gains after lvl 65

The second growth map is pretty much your stat increase. Leveling does nothing past lvl 65

I played almost until the end when I got a new iPhone and a free 3 month trial for their game subscription. I enjoyed my time with it, especially the music. It's a shame it was stuck in apples walled garden for so long as I think it really went off everyone's radar. If you enjoyed the old school final fantasy games I think you'll enjoy this. The characters and story are pretty corny and lame, but the battle system is fun. It's the closest you're going to get to something akin to a proper modern old final fantasy.

If they patch an option to remove XP scaling I am buying it.

So those of you saying this is akin to older Final Fantasy, which era of FF are you talking about, because it's not as if everything pre-XII was some sort of monolithic entity. There are fairly distinct eras to the series.

I'll have to try the demo at some point, just curious what some of you are alluding to.

This is as close to the PSX era of Final Fantasy experiences I've played since they came out. I'd say it's very much so akin to them, as well as a bit of Final Fantasy VI, mixed with some sensibilities from Lost Odyssey. All of this married with the challenge that begins to show up around 10-15 hours in (at least on Hard) makes it one of my personal favorite modern JRPGs, hands down. It's surpassed my expectations in many ways. Amazing soundtrack too, of course.

The characters and story are pretty corny and lame
The characters are definitely that, but in a way that really calls back to those classic Final Fantasies in a good way. That genuine, kind-hearted corniness that leaves me smiling before I even realize I'm doing it. Wholesome. And there really are some touching moments, particularly in the Memory short stories. I've also had a number of laugh out loud moments as a result of that signature Sakaguchi goofiness that he's so good at. As for the story and world building - I actually like it quite a bit. There's some somewhat predictable plot points scattered throughout, but with a nice twist here and there. Overall, I haven't been too disappointed with the writing and story overall.

Ya it doesnt bother me necessarily. I grew up with the PlayStation final fantasy games and I can appreciate a good jrpg with all of the tropes it comes with. Fantasian definitely has that same vibe going on, even though I don't really play these games for the narrative. I like the music, the art and the combat, which for me were enough to make fantasian well worth my while, especially on my phone. It made me really appreciate the level of depth and creativity that could potentially be realized on the platform. Unfortunately I feel that this potential will be forever unrealized as I don't think the game made any difference launching on Apple Arcade. It is a shame, but thankfully it's now on other platforms. It's in the little things, like how you can bend spells/attacks with the touchscreen or now the analogue stick to hit multiple enemies, how you can easily change each characters unique skill trees and abilities to tackle a tough boss, that make the difference. Clearly these guys understand what made the classics fun and are still iterating on ways to make it better. It's baffling that square enix has been releasing such mediocrity under the final fantasy name when this small studio is able to nail it perfectly.

Yeah, I don't really either. Narrative is on the bottom of my list of requirements to enjoy a JRPG, but I'm always happy when I find there's elements of it I can enjoy in any given title.

Agreed on everything else in your post. This does not feel like a game that was developed as a mobile game, because it's such a full, well-made experience. It feels like a game developed for normal platforms, but that ended up on mobile out of necessity. And I think there's good reason for that. It's just too bad so many people are going to overlook it because of that circumstance.

I've watched a few short reviews of this on YT and skimmed that 10/10 RPGSite review (which I absolutely do not trust), does anyone actually think this is a good game?

Story seems like the usual JRPG shite, the graphics/animation are really obviously mobile-tier, so the gameplay/music/other aspects would have to be fucking insanely good to make this worthwhile.

It definitely doesn't seem worth the asking price, Squenix fucking smoking too many blunts as usual

Fine, trying it out now. My initial impressions are not good considering even the fucking keybind menu is buggy as fuck. I keep having to restart the program every time I map a key because the game stops responding to my inputs.

$50 game btw

Fmvs are in ultrawide aspect ratio but they play with huge black borders around them because nobody in Japan knows what an ultrawide monitor is apparently

Well, there's 30 mins of my life I'll never get back.

This is probably one of the worst games I've ever played. I'd be ashamed to play this on my android phone let alone on my PC. Fuck me, people actually paid money for this?

I'm always amazed at how pretty much everything you say sounds like a whiny bitch.

Anyway congrats on trying something for yourself instead of relying on people to tell you what to think as usual.
