Wow, didn't realize FF8 was all Nomura. I hate him even more now. Dude legitimately killed Final Fantasy franchise.

I'm very into cock and ball torture
Obligatory mention of Nomuras fuckbuddy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazushige_Nojima who was the scenario writer for FF VIII, was largely responsible for Kingdom Hearts harsh story direction change following Chain of Memories, made Advent Children and wrote the ATROCIOUS novel where Tidus fucks Yuna and then gets his head blown off by a Blitzball.

:prosper:

But he also was scenario writer in FF VII, KH 1 and FFX so take it how you will

Ultimately, the best FF I think has to be Tactics.

Not being a numbered core entry it is forever marked as out of the race, though. Although, I would say it is probably peak writing Squaresoft ever put out there, or it shares the spot with Vagrant Story. Is it a coincidence the same guy was in charge of both games? We'll never know, but I always considered Matsuno's writing to be very atypical and almost a poor fit for JRPGs in general. He's someone who focuses more on extensive setting building and overarching stories where you have a small POV versus plots driven by character drama and such. A westaboo, if you will. Not in the same vein as Kojima, but rather someone who looked into the Wars of the Roses and Yugoslav Wars as inspiration for his games.

Ivalice is incline. FFT, FFXII and Vagrant Story, what else do you need?

FFT best Tactics RPG, no contest. You only get that satisfaction playing games like classic X-Com

FFXII great cities and best RTWP combat ever. Virgin baldurs gate pre buff mods VS CHAD gambits. Some cool bosses also. Small party size main flaw.

The only infuriating thing about Vagrant story are some puzzles and platforming on final castle and slow menus, in general bad interface. You don't even need to min Max weapons to beat the game, but it's very satisfying to make specialist tools out of monocled autism. A remake or sequel would be the best thing since ELEX or Wizardry 1.

Damn hippies. While FFT, Vagrant Story and FF12 are all decent I prefer the mainline games by far, namely 5 through to 9.

Just one reason of many for this preference is that they have different settings every time, and even within each setting there's tons of variety, rather than being set in boring Ivalice and its bland environments every time. ...That's not fair, Ivalice is a creative setting but it doesn't appeal to me in the same way.

It was playable, though so very grindy (hence the MMO comparison). I really liked the gambit system. But yes, it doesn't qualify as a Final Fantasy game for me. Inferior in every way. Gameplay, art, story, soundtrack...Ivalice hipsters gun b hip. I just choose to assume they haven't played the good mainline FF games in years, if at all. But hey, there are people that are fans of FF13 or 15 out there so I shouldn't be surprised.

This one track was worthy though:

The last good mainline Final Fantasy game was either X or IX depending on how much you dislike the cast of X. To say otherwise is heresy worthy of burning at the stake.

FF12 is terrible, I recently gave it another try and even the Zodiac Age changes cannot save this game. It is fucking awful. It beggars belief that people think this shitty game is incline.

And I'm not even an FF hater, I like 7 for fuck's sake.

Ivalice is great for settings and characters, but FFT was the only one with good gameplay and to be fair they were iterating on TO. Though they did do a good job of that. But VS and FF12 were both dumpster fires as far as gameplay/mechanics go.

You say that like it's shameful. The game was a massive hit for good reason. I remember when it became popular to hate FF7 in certain dark corners, I never did sheepishly join that bandwagon. I replayed all the classics recently (with difficulty hacks) and FF7 came out on top for me. There's a lot to love, especially once the difficulty is appropriate w/hack.

I'm in agreement with how wank 12 was.

I did enjoy it to some degree when it first came out, but never finished it. Having recently picked up the HD remaster it's easy to see why. As others have said it's bloated MMO shit big time. The fact that the remsater has a "fast forward" option tells you all you need to know about how bloated it is.

I like the cast & some of the story, and it's got some great elements (even the MMO style combat is kinda enjoyable if setup right). But the game's structure & pacing absolutely kill it. It's not a patch on earlier entries in the series.

I don't want to downplay your point at all, but Square Enix ButcheryMasterings for all classic FF games are all garbage. Adding in fast forward in others, cheats on demand, save anywhere and achievements. All shit that has no place if you ask me...I say this despite abusing the crap out of fast forward and save anywhere when playing with difficulty hacks on an emulator. How about adding hard/easy difficulty modes instead? Battle speed slider for FF9? Summon spell cutscene reducer for any of them after 7? No, the game needs cheats and achievements, or terrible character sprites for FF6. Fuck you Square Enix.

It's not a patch on earlier entries in the series.

The funny thing is in its complete inadequacy you can tell it's the last time Square Enix actually tried to make a good FF game.

Back to shame: the one it's shameful yet understandable to admit to liking is FFX-2. Sphere grid was fun. Like 12 its clear this was a Square Enix-influenced game, not worthy among the true old classics. But it was still enjoyable in its own right. Then came 13 and the series just became irredeemable trash. Complete shramefur dispray. I have no idea how people, even the sheeple that don't really play games yet buy all the latest trash, can actually like that shit.

All of the modern FF titles are mostly crap imo. I don't see how XII is worse than any of the games from X onwards. The series peaked from IV to VII.

Also, I never understood the love for Vagrant Story. I gave up at some point when I encountered a dragon that I couldn't defeat because it was nearly immune to all the weapons I had. That was a long time ago, but I don't remember the gameplay or story seeming like anything special.

I dunno, it is a little shameful to admit that on the Codex haha.

Let's just say I love it despite it's flaws and leave it at that.

The series peaked from IV to VII

IV is overrated to Chrono Trigger proportions. Worse even, Chrono Trigger is better than it. IV has absolutely nothing that sets it apart from the rest as a game. As a story sure, go ahead an like it for that if you must. But the game side of things is complete trash they intentionally streamlined over the already barebones three games that came before it. I can only assume people that like it do so because it was their first exposure to the series. It's just too barebones to enjoy, and a classic example of why JRPGs as a whole get a lot of unfair flack. You do absolutely nothing in that game. Fucking Pokemon has 10x more depth. Lumping it with the actual good games in the series that are that much more engaging makes no sense.

I also assume you've not played FFIX, It's undeniably a classic. FF8 sure it's a love it or hate it game, but 9 even if not my personal favourite is obvious peak series quality.

People that don't like reliable good old fashioned fun? Don't wanna know them. Sounds like a miserable existence.

X had the sphere grid. X-2 had the dress sphere system. X-2 only needed two changes and I would have loved it.

1) Have an option for actual real turn based instead of that atb crap or whatever they called it

2) Make Paine a cute girl like the rest of the cast instead of an ugly dyke thing

9, 6 and Tactics are my absolute favorite games in the franchise and the reason I absolutly respect Hironobu Sakaguchi as a creative director for a big company. He was a master at putting projects and staff together and overseeing them. (I still marvel at him putting the Tactics team together purely for *Dream Team* reasons. That kind of thinking usually falls flat, yet he pulled it off) Even if personal projects could fail him.

The moment Square lost this was the moment of their full decline.
