Also this is the horniest game, every third dialogue is a sex joke. Now I understand why I was warned not to inspect people's gear in Limsa just to see the name of that cool helmet.

the ERPers have an extension that tells them when someone is inspecting their character.

Allagan Tomestones of Comedy
Certainly is a joke with just how many variants of these there are, have been, and yet gearing for BIS remains as awful as ever.
Would it kill them to add a sort of frequent flyer discount, so that players can reasonably outfit all their jobs with the best stuff within a patch cycle?

Is not that gearing your char is hard i alone made my endgame gear in like half a day with the duty roulette.
They are removing the other two tomestones leaving only the ones of comedy

No, Causality will remain, just will have the weekly cap removed. Same shit they do every even patch.

And gearing more than one job is hell, and if you're gearing off tomes that's hardly BiS. Savage loot lockouts and weekly tome cap mean you can't reach cap on one job in less than 4 weeks, and that's assuming you're being fed coffers.

Now try gearing up multiple jobs under those limits. You can't. Better hope your static doesn't implode in week 2 and your new one doesn't need you to change job.

Define "Max Geared" - full i630 with a 635 weapon?

And was this done week 2 of the patch?

Or is this welfare after-Savage-loot-lockouts-lifted gearing?

Within 2 weeks of patch drop, you could gear up to full Savage gear (which isn't necessarily BiS because you'd want Tome for various slots anyway) maybe 2 jobs, assuming perfect loot drops and a static feeding you every single coffer that dropped, which is never going to happen.

You really don't need so much to get gear that gives you max item levels. All you have to do is your daily roulettes then you exchange your tomestones for pieces of gear that are very high in item level. If you did the Manderville questlines you also get a relic weapon that requires basically nothing to get. Gearing up in the game is not hard at all compared with other mmo's.

Sure, but when you're capped at 450 tomes a week and a full set of tome gear costs 5,135, plus a token requiring seven weeks of normal raid clears, you're not getting a full set in under 12 weeks, not to mention it won't be augmented so it's 10 ilevels under max, and relying purely on tome gear will fuck your substats.

Are... are you gearing off of Tomestones of Astronomy? That's the only way you could get a full set of tome gear in 2 weeks (and involves a lot of roulettes)

Agreed that the Manderville weapons are the best you can currently get except for savage 4th floor weapons.

This has served to remind me that I need to cap both my tomes before the patch drops, and accumulate more materia for the hellscape of pentamelding that is to come. Ugh.

At the end of the day is not like you need top gear like in wow. Even the newest dungeon raids are accessible with a item level of 600+ of course you want the top of the top that will take more effort.
However, it is no necessary for doing the harder content is more for flex than anything. Gearing with Tomestone of astronomy is entirely possible and makes you reach 600+ item level in almost no time. This is why i usually am a bit perplexed when people complain about gearing about the game.

Gearing in World of Warcraft is way way worse. And other MMO even do that extremely worse. But the worse system for gearing i ever saw was in Black Desert online. Never happened once i ended in a situation to be locked out of content because i had not the item level requirement.

If we are talking about raid gear or stuff like that is often something done more for flexing than necessity.

If you're doing Savage then yes, you do need top gear. Because every bit of DPS counts when you're trying to beat enrage.

I'm doing Savage casually this patch, couple of hours a night 2-3 nights a week. Even so, there's no reason for me not to have the best gear I can have going into it, which means:

  • Identifying which gear piece at 640 is best for each slot
  • Getting crafted 640 gear at great time and effort and gil cost, and melding as many materia as possible onto them, probably blowing up dozens in the process.
  • Doing the normal raids for the first couple of weeks and aiming for specific tokens to get some pieces of 640 raid gear, which may involve running the raids repeatedly if I don't win the tokens I need.
  • Doing the same comparison of 660 augmented tome vs Savage raid gear to decide which tome pieces to grab.
  • Capping the Comedy tomes each week and buying the one or two items I'll be able to afford before Savage starts week 3.

I can do this for one job, realistically. So the static's got to plan out who's playing what beforehand.

Yes, if you aren't doing Savage and you're just doing Normal Raids, Alliance Raids, Maps and whatnot, then sure, you can get last tier's gear and drip feed upgrades from Alliance Raids and the capped tomes to somewhere around 625, but that's not "max gear". Max, as in Maximum. Not Good enough for Government.

Lest I sound like I'm being some sort of Hardcore Raider Elitist Jerk, I'm not - I'm just saying that saying you got to "max gear" in 2 weeks is not possible unless you're being disingenuous with the definition of "max gear". If your method works for you and the content that you do, then by all means keep doing it. I'm all for people capping out at (for the current patch as an example) 620 from Alliance Raid gear and Tome gear, with some 630 thrown in from augmented tome, if that's sufficient for the content they want to do.

I was not implying anything crafting is a way. Another is actually procuring the necessary gear. There is nothing bad in wanting top notch gear however that takes effort.

You don't even need tomestones to go 600+, you can buy the Rinascita gear (il 610) on the marketboard.

EDIT: cost me over 1.5 million gil to get the set :(

I haven't even made the 620 crafting set yet, I'll need that to craft the 640 battle gear :/

He's right that you can't get BiS in two weeks though -- which is what "max" implies -- and it's not ultimately that different from WoW in terms of new savage content being balanced such that most people will struggle with gear below a certain ilvl, between raid-wides and dps checks.

(But it's silly in the first place to compare it against WoW at every turn, it's not like anyone here is negatively contrasting it against WoW to begin with; evaluations of MMOs' successes or failures being contrasted against it isn't even about mechanical similarities or differences, but a game's long term subscriber count.)

It is a valid comparsion tho. There are contents that are similiar between the two games. Ex raidin in wow vs raidin in ff14 is vastly different. But in the end while providing challenge ff14 is way more respectful of your time the game never timegates you all you do is content. Thats not the case for wow. That usually timegates you at every turn and also has those borrowed power mechanics that kills your progression every time a new exp drop.
Both games have raids. The difference is ff14 is far more approachable. Yoshida in fact was a former wow player as well. They just got rid of the jank and the time gating.
