Art direction and especially animations looks pretty damn bad. Fuck, why every other game have to look comic booky. :decline:

You do realize the original XCom was heavily based on 90's comic book art

At least it happens fast, unlike fturd 3 fucking slow mo.
It shouldn't happen at all. What exactly does this add to a strategy game?

Volrath cannot into modern gaming aesthetics.
If by modern you mean shit, then yes.

neither can i.

admittedly, the glam cam is the most terribad element in this video, and if it's toggleable - it just has to be - then it's only half as bad but the entire "spacce mareen bunnyhop through a mixture of TheSims and Wolfenstein 3d scenery design" looks terribad as well. Also the cover system has the "cheesy" look about it so far.

I think a problem is that the 50s/60s style is lost in this remake. No matter what they smear about it it remains one tasteless looking game, 2012 style.

In the video it's painful to see what a modern engine is capable of, if only proper games were made again.

50s style? Did I miss something in some other videos?
Neither the originals had a lot of 50s style outside some concepts of the aliens nor does this new one have. Or are you referring to the stupid fps in development by Take Two/2K?

Anyway, I'm willing to give Firaxis the benefit of doubt on the remake. I still don't get why the sectoids are now chimps, but well...

Funny enough I do not have a big problem with the art style, and I think because it does *not* look like a 2012 game. The "cool-cam" can be annoying for some but should not be a real impact on gameplay and will most likely be an option only. Of course this is not a proper sequel or whetever but at least it does not look like they just took the name and general setting from an old classic and remade it into something they think that the youth of 2012 will dig - like what happened with Syndicate.

Real opinions can be formed when there is a demo available (I hope there will be, not in the mood of sailing out anymore)

The original XCOM was totally 90s, very much a product of its time.

Similar to the previous video, but you can see more actual interface and a bit more of the base.

What can I say, I can forgive it quite a lot, because it looks like a game I'd enjoy to play, yeah the orky mutons and chimpanzee sectoids are pushing it, but I think I'll turn a blind eye to it not being 100% Ufo Defense.
I realize they need the cinematic cam to get any sales on the xbrick. For as long as it is toggle-able, or I can skip it with a click, I'll take it as a necessary evil and move on.

It may very well be a fun game to play. But every video I see, the more obvious it becomes that the point is being missed.

The new Xcom will be a smaller scale, console friendly game with a linear progression (complete with a lengthy in-game tutorial).

Yeah, but it was clearly a parody of the "Image comic" art style.

I wouldn't aim quite so high. It had some b-movie allusions and borrowed it's style from contemporary comics, but I don't see enough irony in it to call it a parody.

Old news.

btw its very annoying that latest rock paper shotgun review of gameplay hands on talks about everything except how the bloody turns are. How does it feel, how does it play, how long each turn lasts, how do those "moves" instead of TUs feel when playing,...what the fuck is going on?
Can someone registered there go and ask this?

That... actually doesn't look too bad.

Any idea the level of destructible terrain? It looked like there was a bit in the video. I've totally been spoiled by Silent Storm.

Silent Storm also had a sort of "glam cam" but it was just slow motion ragdoll effects on kills. I didn't find too intrusive.

GC: My only concern is the four soldier squad limit because that does change the nature of the tactics and gameplay quite considerably, so what's the thinking behind that?

JS: It's a six squad limit actually, but you start with four and the idea is that later in the game you add more…

i dont think theyre joking. it's a multi platform release after all. the amount of cinematic sniping and grenade throws would've been a bit much if u had to watch 12 soldiers throwing nades.

Enjoy your next gen X-Com bros . I know I will.

I was hoping the limit would be closer to 12. :-/
It's obviously the xbrick's fault. There was no wat in hell you'll squeeze in many actors plus destructible environs plus large levels.
This may still work because the gameplay is more about flanking and cover now.

Say what you will, chances are it still has proper fog of war :-P

At least they wont just drop... unconscious, when "killed".

listenig to the devs in the vids makes me cringe. "people didn't like it when we took (camera) control from them in a Real time game, but now that we're in a TB game they'll totally love when we spam shitty cut scenes for every mundane shit your soldiers do..." no you fucktards, people still won't like you taking (camera) control from them when they're in a playing flow, this isn't a B-movie all about camera angles and lighting etc. it's about gameplay.

The Interview with Gollops also has some nice subtext there... :smug:

well it's just my taste, i hated it based on the vids that i saw. But it belongs to the "useless but not gamebreaking" next gen shit so long as it is toggleable once you get bored. other issues might be much more important, but i wanted to highlight how horribly out of touch with parts of their playerbase the devs really are.

I think a cool cam would be aproppriate for rare, GENUINELY COOL moments, like when a alien fires a blaster-bomb smack-dab into half of your team, insta-gibbing half of your squad, shrapneling a third and sending the remaining ones flying though the street until they slam into a brick wall, or when you collapse a entire building on top of some enemies, X-COM Apocalypse style.

That kind of thing worked only in the first X-Com games. With a six-man squad, your alien would insta-gib three soldiers, shrapnel a fourth and send the remaining two flying. Not that impressive.
