I used it before I knew any better. Plus they didn't suck as bad back in...2012 I guess it was? So what are the safe alternatives for LP's gents? I've been using my Google Drive for my baby one, but is Imgur really the best we have now?

I moved all my images to my web server or imgur since I got sick of the slow Web 2.0 interface and ads AIDS.

I use CloudFlare which supposedly distributes the bandwidth across the Internet I think. (And vise versa.)

Fuck Photobucket.
I translated my LPs to cubeupload when they started pulling this type of shit --

Not surprised they have pulled this kind of death spiral stunt. They have been on the decline and getting more and more annoying for multiple years now. Sad; they were the best image host eleven years ago. :decline:

Nowadays, I just upload my images to Tumblr; they allow hotlinking, and you can use and abuse the "post privately" function to your heart's content.

It sounds like a good time for somebody to make a image hosting migration script for the codex.

I know how much you neckbeards love ur scripts.

Which LPs did we lose? I would be grateful if one could check the LP database and inform me if any of the LPs are broken.

I have a backup of most of Darth Roxor's LPs, so if he is interested, he might be able to restore them or move them to another hosting. I mean, there was a lot of time put into them.

Only these two (unfinished ones) didn't survive. But if you still have images, I believe they can be made to work as well:
http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/lets-play-nox.69202/
http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/lets-play-grom-back-in-business.50010/

lightbane's LPs are similarly backed up.

Grom is actually TOTALLY FINISHED! :argh:

Where do you have them backed up? Somewhere online or on your hard drive? Because if the latter, I have all my LPs saved on my HDD as well, so it's only a matter of reuploading them somewhere, yeah, but it's still a huge chore. I will probably sit down to it eventually once I have a longer free moment though.

My hard drive. A script posted a few years ago makes all pages display as one, so you get a one giant html page with all images at once, which I then save on HDD. It isn't very elegant, and it puts a massive strain on the browser, but at the very least it works.

In theory, you could take the images, reupload them somewhere they will retain the names, then go through each post and change the links via, say, a Notepad++ with a python script. I mean, it would be faster than doing so manuially.

That works if the pics all have different and discenable names and the hosting doesn't mess with them. Now, I know LPs where people who make them call each pic 1.png, 2.png and so on, and start the count anew with each new update. Those people would be out of luck with this method.

MicoSelva had to migrate his BG2 LP after the dropbox fiasco. I don't know how he did it, but I somehow doubt it was going through ten thousands links one by one. I hope. You might want to ask him how he handled that.

I use my own web hosting now, which I pay for (nowhere near $40 a month, lol). However some of my LP updates might still be powered by Photobucket(TM) - if you see any broken images, please let me know.

Some alternatives, like cubeupload and sta.sh have been mentioned in this thread. I remember DarkUnderlord has been offering image hosting in the Codex gallery too (for a reasonable price) at some point, but I have no idea if that is still available.

If all else fails and if you need a place to store a LP, AFAIK I am only using a small percentage of my webhosting service storage, so I could provide some space for your pictures - but I would need to check how much space is available (can't do it right now). You would need to send me the files somehow (through dropbox?), and be prepared they might be deleted some day, if I cannot afford to pay for the webservice any more, or need the space for an actual website (both are unlikely, though).

How do you do it after the fact?

I mean, when I tried to use Wayback Machine to repair some LPs, it said that some of the pages weren't cached and thus were lost. What determines if a page is cached or not?

Luck. Either their crawler found them, or it didn't. And it's 98 % of the time "didn't" in my experience, especially if we're talking about forums.

I happened to back up each one of those LPs earlier with my script, that's why they're intact.

These ones, I believe:

It seems either that imgur is reusing its URLs or the Internet Archive is rather shaky.

I stumbled upon this capture (very NSFW!): https://web.archive.org/web/2012060...ads/lets-play-disciples-of-steel.66921/page-2

qT28Vxq.jpg

Edit: It seems it's the wayback machine's fault. It disregards capitalisation in the URL, so if it finds a qt28vxq.jpg in the archive when qT28Vxq.jpg was requested, it displays that instead. The results here tend to be on the surreal side, so I don't mind.

Also, I have noticed that for any automated crawls the Internet Archive did, they very often are completely missing the images, only having stored the HTML. Which of course is nowhere near enough for an LP. :decline:

lightbane's LPs are similarly backed up.
We lost MicoSelva's BG LP, Andyman's LP of FF7, DriacKin's Fallout 3 LP, Elzair's Oblivion LP, stabby's Wiz VI LP, and Merkwurdigliebe's IWD LP by my count.

Oh FUCK. MicoSelva's are backed up, but it still sucks. I don't have a backup for BG2, because it's ENORMOUS, but I think he has it locally. And it was a couple months after he migrated from Dropbox, too! That LP is cursed.

All the others were backed up, thank God. I'll have to upload them somewhere, though...
