I'm considering buying the Tomb Raider games from GOG.com. I have all the CDs somewhere, but getting them to work on modern systems is temperamental at best. I imagine GOG.com have probably made some kind of wraparound.

I have the original trilogy pack on GOG and they all load up fine. Not sure about after that. I was shocked TR1 had no resolution options.

Shouldn't there be like 10x the number of dosbox games on there?

A while ago, I read on a thread there that the release was bugged somehow. Maybe it's fixed now, but it's worth checking it out before buying.

Would have to be silly to buy them now anyway. Might as well wait until they're in the daily deal at 75% off. I notice Square Enix games on GOG.com are only on offer until the 19th, though.

Apple meet orange. We're talking about games a year or more old. To elaborate: if you as a publisher/developer haven't recovered your expenditures plus some decent profit within a year chances are you're already on the fast track to bankruptcy. Indie developers especially. AAA publishers less so because they have multiple projects/games to rely on. Never mind the influence of Kickstarter where a developer with a good game/concept for a game funds themselves up front so whatever they make in sales is pretty much gravy. Those that don't get funded... well... they probably have a shitty game concept, anyway.

The whole 'devaluing games' argument is just PR bullshit CD Projekt pulls to enhance their bottom line... so it can be used to fund more shit like Witcher and Cyberrance or w/e the fuck their new project is...

I really doubt game concept is the biggest contributor to kickstarter success or failure.

Never said it was. There are obviously other factors, the majority of which are usually the blame of the developers seeking the funding as opposed to the derpy public at large. It's already been proven that pretty much any and every video game genre can get funded with the right combination of having a worthwhile project, having something to show for it, presenting it well, and having reasonable funding goals. If you put your game up on Kickstarter with nothing but a vague concept no matter how good and/or no proven track record and/or ask for five times what you actually need then, yeah, you'll probably fail.

But your quibble has little to do with the point I was responding to: the 'devaluation' argument is a load of crap. Hell, the proof is borne by the indie developers themselves who openly embrace drastic discounts on their games a reasonable amount of time after initial release. You don't see guys like Edmund McMillan or Introversion or... quite frankly... any of them complain about such price slashes? Quite the contrary they openly embrace them. Even Jeff Vogel woke up and figured it out. All of these guys are desperate to get their games in indie bundles where they couldn't be 'devalued' any greater. Seems like the only people I've seen complain about devaluation are CD Projekt and Origin -- two of Steam's competitors.

Seems to me that GOG is devaluing games as we speak. Not even Steam has ever done a universal 50% discount on all of its prices.

CD Projekt also has no problem selling Witcher 1 for $2.50 (cheaper than you'll probably find any given game on GOG individually priced this sale) and Witcher 2 for $7.50 on Steam.

It's not universal though. There are some titles, like the aforementioned BG or some new ones like Primordia and Eador, that are not part of the price slashing.

Hmm... does this mean that due to the release of the stupid iPad remake, Baldur's Gate won't be on sale for quite some time?

They're old games, though. Publishers and developers are no longer selling them to recoup production costs or raise funds for new products. It's pretty much money for old rope.

GOG Representative said:
Not everything will be on sale for the entire period.

Square Enix games will only be on sale for one week.
Bohemia Interactive games and Retro City Rampage only for 2 weeks.

We will have announcements 48 hours before the discounts on these titles stop to make sure everyone knows.

So what's up with this sale? Seems all the games are on sale? So what's special about ARMA and Witcher 2?
I must admit I'm much more tempted to buy on sale if there are only choice selections, and not the whole catalogue...

The whole catalog - ~20 titles is on a 50% sale. Witcher 2 is 75% off right now.

Your last statement is the inherent irrationality in every human being.
