If Steam had functionality to download the games(that doesn't require Steam running) from the browser, then GOG would be fucking dead to me
you can download a game and then not use steam ever again, at least with the drm free games.

Many years ago there was a stretch where my bank wouldn't process payments to GOG because the payments went through Cyprus (known tax evasion/money laundering haven). Guess my bank had more long term wisdom than I did.

Really a shame to see such noble intentions fall by the wayside, to the point where I wonder how sincere they ever were.

It's a bussiness. CDPR tried to tap into the retro gaming scene without realizing gaming isn't like comics or movies, where there's a "culture" to it. Gamers are just consumers. Steam is the paramount system because it offers what people want in that regard. Gamers don't get to discuss aspect ratio or scan quality like the other mention fandoms do. They just want to play games and Steam already covers that. If anything, the only thing retro pc gaming is doing is killing the abandonware community, which while illegal, it's a grassroots affair.

The main issue with that is that since Valve doesn't mention that anywhere in the games' pages (we're lucky there is someone tagging all Denuvo games) you need to buy the game to figure out if it is really DRM-free or not and if it'll work without Steam. Any lists available out there are woefully incomplete and sometimes even wrong.

GOG is now the premier destination for porn videogame enjoyers.

When you think about it, it's kinda genius. They finally figured out a use case for DRM-free games that makes sense for people born in this century: the ability to play porn games without leaving any evidences behind (online at least).

GOG releases censored games at higher prices than other platforms, so not really.

What exactly is gay in that game? Honestly asking, haven't been following gaming drama lately.
It is a homoerotic game made by a gay man: https://rpgcodex.net/forums/threads...-tactical-rpg-with-high-end-pixel-art.108808/

It's also pretty good.

By this logic, the entire decade of the 1980s is gay.
The whole "big, strong, muscular macho man" aesthetic was taken from the gay world, see Tom of Finland, so yeah, it was pretty gay.

Duke Nukem is gay?
Conan is gay?
Tarzan is gay? Well, maybe he likes monkeys.
Arnie movies are gay?

Maybe you're gay because you get a big fucking hard boner for muscle men.

Look for the big noses. The names will send the images to your brain if you meditate and discern them. Nothing can hide them noses.

This reminded me of this ancient gem.

I think I've mentioned it before but I'm on the verge of ditching GOG now. It's not worth it outside a few DOS releases and all, but yeah, I don't really feel like making another purchase in that site.
It's only really worth it for the DRM-free part but everything else is awful. The forum software is terrible. The forum users are mostly miserable which reflects the overall state. The GOG team is incompetent and their attitude to everything is probably the worst part of it. They also repeatedly broke promises. The releases can be unsupported, partly broken, pre-(fan)patched etc. Add to that polticial bias (screwing over their Russian and Belarusian users) and the verdict is a definitive negative.
The gold box games are on Steam now. Slowly but surely the whole reason of being for GOG is fading away... The issue is that Steam is not only big but also willing to accomodate. Ironically, Steam has proven to be a pc first platform much more than GOG ever has.
Steam is willing to accomodate publishers. Steam is unwilling to clearly mark games with online DRM that will one day stop working. You need to put in a lot of work to filter out games that will never drop Denuvo / Ubisoft online authentication - and will be left in broken state on your account - from your Steam wishlist.

If you want to play newest best-selling game - then sure - Steam is your platform.

If you're only interested in CRPG and strategy games - or only from publishers that respect their customers rights - you may as well skip doing research and buy the game from GOG.

Saying that - I still wish that publishers would change their stupid policy of never removing online authentication. For me it's a deal breaker - and I will never buy Might & Magic X or new Total War games. If it too much hassle to remove DRM from years old game - it is too much hassle for me to buy it. And it correlates pretty well with a game being available on GOG - or being available only on Steam.

Their catalogue is way thinner than what Steam has.
From my wishlist - games that are missing from GOG are also missing from Steam. With an exception of few Gary Grigsby titles - where Steam still has few games not available on GOG.

Few times that I've bought a game from Steam when it was not available on GOG - there was actually a very good reason why GOG rejected / was not offered particular title.

However - I fully admit that I'm a weirdo when it comes to videogames.

I'm impatiently waiting for final version of bug-fixed Daggerfall (Daggerfall Unity) - a game that I've bought in 1996. I've recently finished first Icewind Dale. When it comes to Eye of Beholder - I've seriously considered spending few months fixing ScummVM versions - before giving up and buying a MIST to experience definitive AGA versions.

When it comes to Oblivion - I've started contributing to OpenMW to allow it to handle compressed ES4 files - before some Russian (Kuzya) had improved the original engine enough to meet my standards. Unfortunately Kuzya stopped his project around 21st of September 2022 ;) - so maybe it's time for us to step up and make open source OpenOB.

None of these projects would be possible when digital platforms like Steam bow down to publishers - and original game is protected by layers of DRM years after its original release.
