Supposed leak of Valve's flagship VR game, Half-Life: Alyx: https://www.pcgamer.com/rumour-valve-are-about-to-announce-a-vr-game-called-half-life-alyx/

Rumour: Valve are about to announce a VR game called Half-Life: Alyx
We'll believe it when we see it.

This November 19 will mark the 21st anniversary of the release of the original Half-Life, and according to rumor it will also be when Valve announce a flagship virtual reality game called Half-Life: Alyx.

Valve are rarely interested in celebrating their own game's anniversaries, so take this rumor with a mouthful of salt. The source is apparently the same leaker responsible for the DOTA Underlords leak, and is quoting from an interview between "Geoff" (Geoff Keighley, in his capacity as the creator of the "Final Hours" documentaries about Valve games), Robin Walker (co-developer of Team Fortress 2 among other games), and an unnamed third person.

"March 2020, "Half-Life: Alyx" comin' out", says Geoff in the transcript.

Responding to the question of whether this game would be available for players without VR headsets, "I mean we would love to be delivering a version of this that you could play with a mouse and a keyboard, but like as we said, it began as an exploration of VR," an unnamed person replies.

As for how this entirely hypothetical game would play, the only clue is this statement: "You can see their whole body-- Respond to the situation. You know, panicking, dropping clips on the ground as they fumble their weapons 'cause a zombie's in front of them, all these things, they're just - it's been really fun watching playtests."

Valve have said they'll be releasing a "flagship VR game" this year.

I've reached out to Valve for comment and will update this story if they reply.

the following are posts from the same user who leaked und3rl0rds. Said user is currently trusted by Tyler. Here is everything they've posted:

"but why does this have to be VR only?"

Which you know is a fair concern for people, right? It's like, are they forcing me to buy VR to have the next "Half-Life" experience?
Is that just 'cause you think the opportunity for innovation was sort of in the VR space with this? You're not doing a flat screen
version of this game, right?

Yeah, I mean we would love to be delivering a version of this that you could play with a mouse and a keyboard, but like as we said,
it began as an exploration of VR, (snippet ends)

-

But then again it brings - obviously to this one, and why this, why now? Some people would probably cynically say, oh Valve has to go back to making games now that Epic's chippin' away at Steam, and "Artifact" wasn't necessarily the hit
everyone wanted it to be, (snippet ends)

-
(geoff talking)
March 2020, "Half-Life: Alyx" comin' out, and again, yeah, we'll do "The Final Hours" next year. You know, it's been so fun to do those
with "Half-Life", "Half-Life 2", "Portal", and that will take everyone through really the past decade at Valve and all that you guys have been through, all the experiments that you don't know about, (snippet ends)

-

You can see their whole body-- Respond to the situation.
You know, panicking, dropping clips on the ground as they fumble their weapons 'cause a zombie's in front of them, all
these things, they're just - it's been really fun watching playtests.

Anyway, so yeah, it's been really fun to build this. I think wherever we go next, or whatever platform,
whatever we focus on, I think we're excited-- Come on Robin (walker), say it!
We wanna know why -- No but as you said, the engine is now at a point where it's like, you can do this stuff now, right?

"Yeah, the engine is ready now.
I think it's like Robin
says, we want to put this out
and see how the world reacts to it
before we make any concrete
plans about what we do next."

(snippet ends)

Gabe seems particularly obsessed with it. Or extremely fringe technology, in general.

Could be because of contracts.
For years the largest supporter(and only, really) of VR was the US military. I don't think it's far-fetched to assume they're probably behind the current VR "boom".
How many of you actually own a VR headset? I don't know anyone with one. How the hell is the market large enough to sustain all these VR games being developed?

I'd be annoyed at Half-Life continuing in VR, which I will never play, but I stopped caring about Half-Life's story a long fucking time ago.

Are people going to shell out for VR to play as their blasian waifu if they can't even see her without looking in a mirror?

Good news, it's a prequel.

People buy consoles just for games, so there will be a market for VR. Though everyone is too accustomed to stare at screens and moving your head around all the time is not for the lazy. Ok, it's doomed.

Oh for fuck's sake. For fuck's sake.

Seriously, I'm probably one of the few guys here that will defend Half Life 2. I like it, for reasons. I massively , almost irrationally, dislike Alyx due her nature of waifu by committee. When a character is built to be such a nerd bait I get some type of natural revulsion. And it got me the last time I re-played the Episodes, the writers at Valve truly wanted the spunky half-asian half-black female engineer-mechanic-resistance fighter to be the true protagonist instead of the silent loser with the glasses.

They'll get their dream.

That said, I've seen shooters with VR, they're hilarious for meme videos but they'll need some outstanding work to make it function as a fun game. And I'd love to see where Valve will get up-do-date game designers, or even borderline competent ones. The last game they threw out without getting modders to do the work for them was Artifact, and it was a massive failure on all regards. One can argue that Valve is competent at hiring content, but who they are going to get for a supposedly killer VR game?

Plus, are VR sets even common nowadays? Bar for Jap VR porn or memery?

And yet, so Half Life dies: as a prequel with an annoying character on a platform that no sane man considers for gaming.

lol at people getting upset. Valve isn't a game dev. This is just a tech demo for their headset. The goal is to sell their platform/device to gamers and devs, and create a new revenue stream.

They obviously wouldn't use their main character and series for such a thing. Oh and HL2 was shit anyways so it's quite late to be upset.

I hope there will be a good non-VR version.

Just kidding, it will be shit.

Could be good news for Half-Life fans.

It shows that Valve hasn't completely buried the franchise yet. A tiny part of me thinks this could be a lead-up to HL3 announcement.

VR is like the bottom of the barrel of decline.
One would hope that from there you can only go up, but I'm sure they'll find a way to surprise me.

inb4 Dextard and his butthurt that people just don't get the awesomeness of VR.
