Microsoft owns Shadowrun and now also own multiple RPG studios. It seems unlikely that they would license out their IP to what is now a rival studio. Circumstances change.

Uh? How? Wasn't Shadowrun owned by Harebrained? They sold their own IP to Microsoft and then sold themselves to Parameme?

Shadowrun rights are a bit of a mess. From what I understand it was a remnant of FASA turned holding company which licensed the rights to make computer games to Harebrained, until that FASA branch was bought by Microsoft and Harebrained ceased to be an independent publisher.

Yeah, Microsoft has owned Shadowrun since 1999 https://web.archive.org/web/2007031...ft.com/presspass/press/1999/jan99/fasapr.mspx

No more Shadowrun games then. Sad, I find them a bit comfy.
As noted
Problem being that Dragonfall was 9 years ago and any game in 2023 made by an American developer and released by a Swedish publisher is 99% guaranteed to be woke garbage.
Harebrained is the Jill/Anthea/Shobo show now. While Andrew McIntosh is also still there quietly working away on their other project, he's also responsible for the twee writing of Battletech.

Yeah, Dragonfall was good because it was a small team and not the main body of HBS (it was going to be a small DLC at first). And about half the team is gone last I checked. The director of Dragonfall isn't even doing games anymore, he's back to doing art.

There should be a movement to make Brian Fargo and Todd Howard interested in the Shadowrun and Battletech IPs. :M

Todd could totally pull off a Shadowrun game without breaking a sweat. In F76, he had to go through all the effort of re-skinning Skyrim dragons to get those Scorhbeast thingies. But since actual Dragons are a thing in Shadowrun, he doesn't have to do even that much - just copy-paste them directly and call it a GOTY day.

Friendly reminder Paradox owns White Wolf now.
its like paradox is making a collection of things that won't happen just to spite me, they'll probably buy funcom next
well at this point having funcom bought probably would result in something from their IP instead of today limbo
funcom was already bought by someone, that is tencent. in any case funcom's limbo IPs are in limbo for a reason. the future is conan and maybe dunc.

Microsoft's main agenda with their game portfolio seems to be to get games for their Game Pass service. I bet they'd licence Shadowrun out to anyone who promises to make an Xbox/PC exclusive game that's on Game Pass from day 1.

if it s any rpg at all it would be a surprise imo

that said a man can dream, dragonfall was fantastic even with mediocre gameplay
It is one or the other. A game cannot be at the same time "fantastic" and have "mediocre gameplay". It's like a "great singer" who can't sing well. He might be great for some reason - but a great singer he is not.

Then explain why some people think Pentiment is a good game when it doesn't feature any gameplay!

Possibly the first rule of magic applies: People CRPG players are stupid. Assuming you are right about the game.

A game can have, say, a great story, but that alone doesn't make it good AS A GAME - because a game is primarily played - reading is secondary, at best. Can't have a good game without good gameplay just as you can have a good airplane that doesn't fly. No matter how beautiful or modern it is, it isn't good as airplane. That's my take on this. YMMV.

It's way too late for that. "Video Game" has more or less meant "Interactive Entertainment" for 30 years or so.

Its a more extreme case of disco elysium , story telling must be good enough.
