It's not a CRPG exactly and I'm not sure how performance is on toasters (only because it's a Unity game, it is otherwise not demanding at all), but you might like Vagrus if your sensibilities are what they appear to be.

As a late 30s grognard who bounces off a lot of modern "RPGs", I really enjoyed it.

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and I was thinking I could ask you guys for some recommendations for CRPG games since it's a genre I'm really enjoying but can't seem to find a lot of games that I actually thoroughly enjoy.
Gain experience with the different major subgenres of CRPGs, so that you understand what you like and dislike, then pursue your favored subgenres in more depth. Here are examples of high-quality games that fit well into one specific subgenre:
  1. Rogue-likes: Rogue (1980), Telengard (1982), Nethack (1987), Ancient Domains of Mystery (1994)
  2. Turn-Based Blobbers: Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (1981), The Bard’s Tale (1985), Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge (1990), Might & Magic: World of Xeen (1994)
  3. Garriot-likes: Ultima III: Exodus (1983), Ultima IV: The Quest of the Avatar (1985), Ultima VII: The Black Gate (1992)
  4. Real-Time Blobbers: Dungeon Master (1987) & Chaos Strikes Back (1989), Legend of Grimrock (2012) & Legend of Grimrock II (2014), Eye of the Beholder (1991), Black Crypt (1992)
  5. Tactical RPGs: Pool of Radiance (1988), Death Knights of Krynn (1991), and other Gold Box games, Perihelion (1993), Temple of Elemental Evil (2003)
  6. Underworld-likes: Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss (1992), UU II: The Labyrinth of Worlds (1993), The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (1996), King’s Field IV: The Ancient City (2002)
  7. JRPGs: Final Fantasy VI (1994), Final Fantasy IV (1991), Final Fantasy IX (2000), Planescape: Torment (1999)
  8. Choice & Consequences RPGs: Fallout (1997), Fallout 2 (1998), Arcanum (2001), Age of Decadence (2015)
  9. Open World RPGs: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002), The Faery Tale Adventure (1986), Fallout: New Vegas (2010), Kingdom Come: Deliverance (2018)
  10. Action RPGs: Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen (2012/2013), Demon’s Souls (2009), Dark Souls (2011), Salt & Sanctuary (2016)

Examples of high-quality games that can be described as a combination of two subgenres:
  • Wizardry-like & Garriot-like: Final Fantasy (1987)
  • Tactical & C&C: Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (1993), Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager (1994), Wasteland 3 (2020)
  • Rogue-like & Action: Diablo (1997)
  • C&C & Action: The Witcher (2007)
  • JRPG & Action: NieR: Automata (2017)
  • Action (Souls-like) & Open World: Elden Ring (2022)

You also might be interested in videogames that aren't RPGs but have borrowed substantial RPG elements, such as these high-quality examples:
  1. Squad-based Tactics w/RPG elements: Jagged Alliance 2 (1999), X-Com (1994), Final Fantasy Tactics (1997), Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children (2020)
  2. Strategy w/RPG elements: Heroes of Might & Magic II (1996) and other HoMM games, Sword of Aragon (1989)
  3. Adventure w/RPG elements: Quest for Glory (1990) and sequels
  4. Beat-‘em-ups w/RPG elements: Dragon’s Crown (2013), Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom (1993) / Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (1996)
  5. Other Action w/RPG elements: Deus Ex (2000), Blade of Darkness (2001)
  6. Metroidvania w/RPG elements: Bloodstained (2019), Hollow Knight (2017)
  7. Gamebooks: Warlock of Firetop Mountain (2016), Disco Elysium (2019)

Thanks a lot for the list, I'm gonna try and check out some of the games you typed there. I like most old games but my only gripe with them in general is mostly mechanics, not looks, or maybe the ui sometimes seems kind of weird, but generally I enjoy them.

Ignore most advice on this forum, most people here have the tastes of a rotting possum (and I use the term people loosely).

Let the Porkman tell you about ACTUALLY GUD RPGs though the history of this here planet:

Ultima Underworld
Betrayal at Krondor (shit graphics now but if you can get past that, good RPG)
Fallout
Fallout 2
Baldur's Gate
Planescape: Torment
Gothic
Gothic 2
Arx Fatalis
Divine Divinity
Deus Ex (play it with GMDX mod, made by a fellow retard on this forum, Ash , shit tastes in gaming but the mod is excellent)
System Shock 2
Mask of the Betrayer (expansion for NWN2)
Risen
Fallout: New Vegas
Dark Souls
Witcher
Witcher 3
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
ELEX
Expeditions: Viking
Shadowrun: Dragonfall
Battle Brothers
Vulture (graphical NetHack)

Because Witcher 2 is an abomination. Worst combat in RPG history (if Morrowind and Arcanum didn't exist), weird pacing, shit jumping all over the place, technical issues, etc. You should still play it once, just to follow the Witcher series overall plot, but as a standalone game, it's SHITE.

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and I was thinking I could ask you guys for some recommendations for CRPG games since it's a genre I'm really enjoying but can't seem to find a lot of games that I actually thoroughly enjoy.
For reference I am a really big fan of the original Fallout, I really enjoyed age of decadence and I'm liking Expeditions: Rome a lot. I don't really enjoy party games but I can find them fun if they let me customize characters a lot, I don't like preset characters even if they have their own stories and quests. I like preplanning my parties to make them like a complete entity. I know a lot of the games or tried them so I'm mainly looking for some I might have missed.

I've played Path of Exile, Pathfinder, Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Age of Decadence and maybe some more. Tiranny is one I might try again sometime. Thanks a lot guys, I'll read every comment and answer if I feel I can add something.
Sup, king. Nice to see ya round these here parts. Tell me, have you played Cyberpunk yet? There is a brand new DLC, too!
The AAA game? Not really, I couldn't run it in my PC unfortunately x(, I've seen some stuff about it and it looks really polished now, so it seems enticing.
Don't worry, G. Just buy it now and let it age like fine wine, until you're able to run it. I know you wanna.
I am from Argentina, so games are really expensive :(. Might try to get it on a discount later on though, thanks a lot.
Give Neo Scavenger a try. It’s only $15 in the US and should give you many hours of fun.
