Tried a naval battle and i think it really needs an update.
I like the 3 turns phase then back to the boats when you board another ship but :
- You should materialize the grappling
- defenders can cut it/them in order to sail away (one CC attack or 2 and /or a fire attack)
- If not the boats engaged in battle skip their turns when the game switch phases (they don't fire either because the crew is busy fighting off the boarding party)

Meanwhile, the other boats are free to move and fire around when it's their turn.
Aside from that (it can be very annoying), the two battle phases are a great idea, also, why not allowing a single extra canon salvo for the boarded ship if you think it's absolutely necessary.

I want to be able to grind to power up my characters more.
You're looking at the wrong series then. Character progression in these games is very horizontal - you don't get more power, you get more flexibility. More powerful abilities are usually offset by having charge-up times or some other drawbacks. Improving your active skills usually gives you more range, or more duration, not more damage. Your HP pool will only increase by around 50% by the end of the game (if you put your heart into it), your damage output will maybe double, if you heavily invest in weapons and weapon skills. So grinding really isn't terribly useful.

I'm pretty sure that the monster den quest battles given from time to time give experience. I've also cleared the same dens multiple times.

I think I notice some nice improvements to the engine with scripted animations and cutscenes compared to Alvorra or Voidspire. I'm already pumped to get further into this game and I just started.

Eldiran is the music Kevin Phetsomphou? It's great, again.

edit- I love the descriptions on all the items when examining them. Useful and entertaining. Gonna be examining everything in the game...

Just buy up all expensive goods and bulk sell them to the remote corners of the map. I think gold and pearls to the northwest is the most space efficient option.

Everybody in your party is going end up with 40 hp or so and 9 or few points more in whatever they using. This isn't a got to grind to level 99 jrpg or a western min max rpg, its more like morrowind explore and chill rpg.

Is there a way to rearrange the order your party goes in combat? I was going to run my main character as a tactitian, but if he goes first every turn, it makes some of the skills ineffective.

edit- I mean when they all have the same initiative—at the start of a battle everyone goes on the same time unit, but my main character is at the front.

double edit- I think if you rearrange your formation, then save your game and load your game, it will set the turn order to the formation you have.

Looks almost like Uncharted Waters 2, one of my all time favourites, but with dungeons. Interested in this.

Ok, finished it. The last dungeon was fun, if a bit too disco for my liking. Overall, my impression remains the same - a very good game that could have been great with a little more fleshing out. Nothing that couldn't be done in a patch, if Eldiran is up for it - just a few NPCs here and there giving some lore bits about the dungeons, the nations and the overworld. Oh, and a Wall-related dungeon (unless there is one and I just missed it), that was a huge bummer to find out it was basically just a decoration.

The first character I rolled got a quest to explore the channel south of runewald—I think from Reeve while eating a local specialty. I made a second character, played for much longer, and haven't gotten that quest. Anyone know what that's about or what triggers it?

I was a fan of Pirates! and anything pirate-related (even AC: Black Flag) so i should give this a go. I tried to play Uncharted Waters 2 in SNES emulation but there was a weird framerate/refresh rate issue with the ROM that no other SNES game seemed to have that turned me off so I never got too far into it. HG seems very close to that.

I've finished to write a rough draft of a 10 page review. I'm still unsure wether I'll try to fill the few blanks and translate it from 5 years old kid english to proper english and submit it to the staff or if I'll simply post it here.

Explored a little over 70% of the map, probably getting close to the end. I hope there's a challenging/long dungeon somewhere, but I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've played so far and I know dungeon delving isn't the main aim of this game.

My party:
Guardian/Warpblade w/ Tactician dip for "Now!" — Super mobile to finish off enemies or provide support. 3 tile teleport every turn is so strong.
Tactician/Warden w/Enchanter dip for elemental fury — 86% dodge, 26% resistance, mostly uses negate/now!/advance and sometimes guard/ward or aegis/hold.
Gladiator/Shiftcloak w/Brawler and Berserker dips for grin and rage — Throws axes (pictured below). Has an entire bag of mithril axes, thunder axes, fire axes, and coral axes, and because of the swashbuckler talent he can take axes out of his bag, or pick them up off the ground, and throw them in the same round. Massive damage. Shiftcloak gives mobility from tumble. I'll probably switch to Shiftcloak/Gladiator and use melee momentum instead of weapon master, but I'm not sure.
Sorcerer/Enchanter w/ Elementalist dip for shock — 21 lightning magic skill, 58 duration stun, big aoe damage, shock bolts onto 4 targets and can be Now!'d twice for 12 shock bolts in a round.
Defiler/Unmaker — 13 ruin magic, 4 wind magic, 2 lightning magic, 11 magic attack. Long debuffs, ability to spread debuffs. Ruin touch does a load of damage. Ruin aura does ~25 damage to anything starting their turn next to him and he can heal almost his full health with drain every turn.

Essence flow is really OP and keeps the warpblade and sorcerer going as long as they want (plan your max MP in accordance with your spell costs, particularly good if you have multiple combinations of spells that satisfy the Max MP - 1 condition. e.g. my sorcerer with 28MP can either do lightning bolt (7mp) + 4x shock bolt (20MP) or shock (10MP) + 2x lightning bolt (14MP) + elemental fury (3MP) or 2x shock bolt (10MP) + 2x lightning bolt (14MP) + elemental fury (3MP)... you get the idea).

I have two more ability crests but don't know what to use them on.

Strength could go even higher: [4 base + 2 from gladiator + 3 from weapon expert + 2 from gauntlets + 6 from gag + 6 from rage + 4 from morale + 5 from elemental fury + 2 from advance] * 2 from grin = 68 strength (but elemental fury and advance have to be used again before the next turn, which isn't usually worth it, especially if the tactician has Now!)

Warpblade crazy mobility can kite Drakkis back and forth before the enrage for as long as he wants.

Overall game is character building porn, but encounters haven't really challenged an optimized squad yet.

If you have such problems, then get the DOS version.

Quick search gives me these 2 sites for the top 3 links.

All classes now have only 5 active abilites compared to the previous games but they all became a bit more focused - a change i don't find unwelcome.
Healing sage and the one who creates barriers are now different classes, weapon throw is now a new gladiator class shtick instead of brawler and so on.

The only thing i find a little bit annoying is the new class unlock system that requires you to find a teacher and pay him a bribe in addition to meeting the class xp requirements. It doesn't seems like you can ask in ports about where you should search for the unmaker teacher or whatever. Apart from that i am more or less satisified with everything in Horizon's gate.

Crossbows and guns are really fun to play once you get one of the reload passives. You can either take the swashbucklers double reload or shiftcloaks rolling reload and dash around like a gun-fu master.

Eldiran Unless I'm mistaken the game lacks a keyboard shortcut for the "Move" command and potentially a way to drop some food without spliting into half stacks several times.
