No but you can commit an act of terrorism by freeing the jinn.
I expected a simple dungeon crawler, but there's a lot more to it. I'm positively surprised. I gave the game to my Romanian pal and we're playing it together now, he has a similar experience. There is lots to discover, and there are even choices & consequences!
Here's a couple:
When you have to get rid of the squid, there are two ways to do so: gather its eggs, or just attack it to chase it off. I attacked it and didn't even know the egg quest exists. I wonder what the difference in outcomes is, I'm pretty sure there is one.
My pal helped out a pirate, and restarted his game afterwards because the consequences weren't pretty. The pirate became active again and sank the ship that brings you back to the first island, effectively cutting you off from it! The main quest doesn't require you to go back there I think, so it's not game-ending, but it's a major consequence.
The main quest has the caliph of the third island send you to other islands and talk to their rulers to reunite the islands. When he gives you the second letter, he says "The ruler of that island is into dark magic, and Satan is trying to deceive him. If he gives you a task, you probably shouldn't do it."
The task he gave me was to retrieve a magic lamp. I brought him the magic lamp. He freed the ifrit locked inside, the ifrit betrayed him, and now there's a super powerful demon ravaging the land and two major cities are on lockdown, preventing me from entering them until I deal with that fucking ifrit. This is the most apocalyptic consequence I've ever seen in an RPG. Holy shit.
On one island, there's a roc, a giant bird that many fantasy games use as a transport unit. And you guessed correctly, you can get the roc to transport you to other islands if you help him out. But there's also a guy who wants to eat a roc egg and offers you good money for it. If you steal the roc's egg, it will attack you and you have to kill it, taking away the option of using it for transport.
I haven't gotten that far (already freed the pirate, though), but shouldn't befriending the roc provide a workaround? The starting island has a Rock of the Roc, so I guess you should be able to fly there even if the boat is gone.
The Roc wants grilled tuna every time you ask him for a flight, and he always heads back to his home island afterwards so he doesn't give you any return trips. What a scam!
So I haven't heard much about character progression, or sense of progression in general yet. I'm assuming the character system is fairly minimal, but is it still satisfying?

You have like 6 basic stats that influence different things. Speed increases attack speed, stranf attack damage, vitality resistance to status effects, and so on. So far I think it's fine, though there are very clear dump stats here that I have no idea why anyone would ever raise, like 'persuasion' which is just better prices at merchants.
Apart from stat progression there's also some neat gear progression in that certain places are locked until you get the appropriate tool to access them - because they're behind rocks (need a hammer) or trees (need an axe). There's a metroidvania-ish quality to it since the game takes place on a bunch of islands, and these tools give you one reason to revisit them.
Also, in case you didn't know there's a free demo, and you should check it.

Two questions: is it possible to sell firewood anywhere other than the starting island? I always end up with more than I could ever use and can't do anything with it.
Also, what about the purple crystals you can mine with a hammer on the third island (and maybe others)? They look like a good source of income, but seem to be non-respawning, and their description in the inventory says "Quest Item." Will I screw myself over if I sell it all? I know I could buy some back, but that would be at a minor loss.

But to answer his question: yes, you can sell firewood on the starting island. The homeless guy who sells camping equipment after you give him money buys wood.

I know that, but my question is, are there any buyers elsewhere? Going back to the starter island to sell stuff is free because the boat rides count as return trips, but then getting back out into the world again costs money, which would take up a large chunk of whatever I make by selling wood. Also,
certain actions during the game can make a return trip to the first island... problematic.

Ah, yeah. I'm fairly sure I've gone to every town in the game and he's the only camping vendor there is. Unfortunately you'll just have to delete the wood instead of hoarding it. It just gets too hard to hoard stuff the further in you go as you amass tools and keep getting quests to collect 10x of unstackable items.
I'm slowly getting through but my opinion hasn't changed since what bothers me about the game are still persistent problems. There's still a lack of point in what I do and none of the quests are interesting in terms of design or story. I feel like a mailman most of the time.
Dev seems to be on a patching spree. I might start over once its done – some of the issues that need patching should make the game substantially more challenging (such as fixing spider venom and snake venom neutralizing each other), as well as resolve various annoyances I've encountered.
