Btw, is there a way to know beforehand which wall section will be eligible for receiving mounted crossbows/harpoons?

The long stretches are eligible, smaller sections and turns are not.

I don't really understand how computers work. How likely is it that this will run on my comp? I've watched a few youtube series on this game and I really want to play it.
my computer said:
  • CPU: 1.8GHz Intel Core i7-8550U (quad-core, 8MB cache, up to 4GHz with Turbo Boost)
  • Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 620.
  • RAM: 8GB LPDDR3-2133 SDRAM.

Built in video and 8 ram? Run it will, if coming last at a Paralympics competition counts as running. You'll definitely need a mod to downscale texture quality.

Yeah I figured that might be the case, based on my experiences with other games on this machine. Frostpunk, for example, is a damn slide show once my city starts getting big. But it runs. A quick search shows a texture downgrade mod exists though. So I guess I could give it a shot.

Holy Nation is pretty fun place to settle. Get prayer days every week, when you get bored/strong enough just start killing them. They'll still send like 3-4 more prayer days before they take the hint and start raiding you, and there's a nice escalation of hit squads.

I never got hungry bandit swarms, only river raptors and organized ninja raids.

FYI though if you want a more balanced building/raiding game play Rimworld.

Have you found a flat area to settle near HN? I definitely want to take them on, but my current base gives me headache with all the hills when I try to drop walls (I guess I could also give up on upgrading them).

Flat-ish. My spot was just down the road from Blister hill, where the road passes between two ridges, the one to the south had iron + copper, good stone, water, and fertility to grow wheat. Placing buildings was tricky (raise them up and rotate to find an alignment that works) but walls were no issue.

Then a run to town for supplies or selling stuff is a quick jog, plus once you decide to raid you have all the farms nearby + an easy retreat from attacking the city.

For crossbows, putting a few robots in permanent sentry duty works rather well. Other guys would starve because crossbow duties apparently is more important than eating.
Turret guards should retrieve food for themselves when hungry, but it seems the AI concerning this is a bit wonky. It helps to place a food container conveniently near your turrets, although even then you'll want to periodically check on your turret guards to make sure someone isn't unnecessarily starving themselves.

Or install the mod that sets starvation on the turret job to zero.

Inspired to go back to this, couldn't find my save games. Started fresh.

Did the slave start. Tried to flee and escape a few times with no luck, only beatings. Starting trying to free as many slaves as possible but most are too scared to run (makes sense I guess). Realized you can do stealth knockouts on caged prisoners, spent a few nights sucker-punching people until both my guys had 40ish Assassination skill and I was able to knock out guards. Threw them into their own cages and stole all their stuff but despite the 'Holy Nation Disguise' status I can't walk out the front door. Well I'm sure I'll figure something out.

I think disguises only work with other factions.

I have eventually decided for this new spot for my new city(Beak City to the East).
Not as flat as I hoped, but it will do.
It has access to all resources, and to green and desertic biomes.
Wind is OKish.
Beak things provide a great source of meat and leather.
I am confident they will intercept most tax collectors :D
btw, can I still do shopping in their city if I refuse to pay tax? OR do I need to forcibly remove their leadership prior to reopening their cities again?
The other 3 crosses are small outposts(a small building or watch tower + a few walls + a few harpoons and a few beds) to fall back in case the nearby expedition went wrong (the one in the Venge was mostly to get protection from the scorching ray. The outpost in bugmaster land was invaluable to make getting in and out manageable).

For prisoners, I now use the "inifinite food item" mod to keep them fed (but I only have bugmaster as human prisoner ATM).

All my people got eaten by Fogmen. :(

I had two out exploring and found raptor island. Distracted the megaraptor so I could take the loot. On the way back, they got beaten by cannibals because I forgot to drop the loot that was weighing them down.

The cannibals got intercepted by escaped servants. Who in turn got intercepted by the Fogmen. By this time I had the rescue crew geared up and on its way, only for my main man to get eaten first.

His death was avenged but sadly there were too many of them, more men got captured, leading to more rescue attempts, with more people getting captured until the last few fell in a brave final stand. :salute:

Will reload and play again.

Cannibals and fogmen are a pain to handle, as they will priorize capturing your downed guys over winning the fight.
I always carry anyone downed ASAP.
You can also "distract" them by tying anyone to their pole (I think even one of theirs works too, but any brigand you came across would fit the deal).

Train STR and heavy weapons and you will obliterate cannibals, fogmen, and other swarmers by the dozens. The key is being able to take out 3 or 4 of them per swing.

I plan on relocating my entire crew just outside of Mongrel and establishing a monastery. I've found a nice location that'll fit a bughouse right on top of a mountain cliff.

They will sleep and fight until the fog is clear.

Took me 10 days to escape Rebirth.

I ended up freeing enough prisoners until I had 7 people in my squad. I geared them up with all stolen equipment and lured guards away from the mountain gate to take them out. Rushed the last three and sent a few guys to grab the crossbow turrets to finish them off. Freedom!

The Flotsam safehouse was nice but the food went fast. I had three shek who were rapidly starving so I had to carry them. Made it to a Holy Farm and stole some food but got caught by a patrol and beaten. They left me for dead and I recovered but four guys were now starving, with only three healthy people I had to leave someone behind. Left Axir the Shek to die in the ditch while I carried on to the Hub. A second Shek starved on the way and the Hub exterior was overrun with starving bandits, but eventually I limped to the main gates and, sold off some of the extra equipment, and bought all the food available. Now I supposed I'll make my way to Squin and start thieving to make some real cash.

Gathered my warchest and built up the stake of supplies to start a town, now I just need the workforce. I had the idea of filling out my team with all ex-slaves, since they're usually better than a 3000 cat basic recruit anyway. Back to Rebirth!

If I can't fight past the back entrance, I'll just let myself get captured and bust everyone out that way. Easy peasy.

Also, is it possible to turn yourself in for your bounty using your non-bounty characters, then break out and keep the money? My original two guys are worth 30k each in Holy Nation.

Reading this thread has possessed me to play this silly game some more. I made a custom start which will allow me to shamelessly cheat skip the first few hours I usually spend grinding for startup funds. Even wrote a little backstory to justify it for the character.

The goal of this playthrough is to become the purest embodiment of a United Cities shitlord. I will restore wealth and prestige to my family name as a slaver and bounty hunter, with my sights ultimately set on bringing the Empire's justice to the dastard known as Tinfist. Once that is settled, I'll turn my attention to founding a new city and raining destruction upon the Holy Nation, Flotsam Ninjas, and anyone else I deem to be unworthy of existence (it's a long list).

Snazzy new starting robes befitting our future Caligula:

We'll see how far I can keep this LARP going before I get bored. The OP start and XP booster will cut out a lot of the early grind, and this will be my first time using Living World, so perhaps that will make for a few surprises.

btw, can I still do shopping in their city if I refuse to pay tax? OR do I need to forcibly remove their leadership prior to reopening their cities again?

At first, you can. But every attack you beat away lowers your reputation with the faction, so in the end you'll become their enemy.

Also, each outpost draws its own raids, and if you build many outposts, the border ones will shield those inside the perimeter.

What if I heal their guys afterwards and put some in beds? Wouldn't that make me friendlier?
I guess I can also take them out (but the meitou katana would only be useful on my archers).

Anyway, a part of my squad was away escorting the pack animals and workers at the base during the relocation, when an United City "tax evasion party" came at my new unwalled outpost.
They downed all my melee guys but 2 (while the shooters were in a locked watch tower raining death on the attackers), until a pack of beak things showed up, so I ran away letting them duck it out, then re-engaged to help the beak things.

I am now really glad to have settled there:
- great egg resources that relieve the need to organize shopping runs to sell the excess samurai pyjamas (I now just melt anything not masterwork) and my outpost of 25 has been able to live on meat alone so far.
- close to the crab people (but not close enough to take part in their tournaments I suppose :( ), scaphouse and the great library (but do their blueprints ever restock?)
- beak things make for great "natural allies" .
