Added this to the Lulz&Boycott section.
Double Fine's MASSIVE CHALICE Tactical fantasy game by Brad Muir, features a generational Epic Timeline with heroes aging. After squandering millions they come up with an half assed concept led by a nobody more concerned about his hetero privilege than to make al game.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1117671683/harbinger-down-a-practical-creature-fx-film

A sci-fi/horror film by Creature FX Designer Alec Gillis, that will celebrate Animatronics and Makeup FX . Help keep FX real!

What is Harbinger Down?

In the spirit of sci-fi/horror classics, Alien and The Thing, Harbinger Down is a tense, claustrophobic full-length creature film that will feature only practical Animatronic and Makeup Effects.

If you're a fan of the art of Animatronics and Makeup FX, you know that this technique is overlooked by the big studios. I'm hoping that you will help us change that by supporting this labor of love. I will write and direct and ADI co-founder Tom Woodruff, Jr. will produce.

Our company, Amalgamated Dynamics, will create the kind of Oscar caliber Creature Effects for which we are known.
The Story

A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship's crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation.

Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren't about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

Asking for $350,000 (already at $109,246) 16 days to go. $25 for the Movie.

They made it! Thanks for sharing this.

HARVEST is a Graphic Adventure similar to Snatcher, Phoenix Wright. Set in the future, you play as a detective searching for answers.

In the future, a chemical war took place leaving 99% of the Earth's population unable to produce offspring.
The remaining fertile humans are crucial to the survival of mankind, however they begin to disappear mysteriously.
You will play as a detective in Detroit working to solve the case and help save the world from human extinction.

Amazing composer Rich Douglas will be laying down the music and sound design for the game. Rich is very talented and has worked on many great projects, such as Shadowgate, Stan Lee's Verticus, Lifeless Planet, and Castle Dracula.

I really want to like this game.
The setting is pure fap.

But so far they only have concept art. So I'm really unsure that they're capable of doing a game.
Much less one that will have full voice overs and has a goal of 10k

Some Indiegogo projects:
Frontiers: Fantasy hiking simulator with a pretty good pitch
Proof that people buy Bethesda games because they like the hitch, uninteresting for me, unless some of the Codexers that played Skyrim for hundreds of hours wants to vouch support for this.
Death to Spies 3: Third game in the series, this time closer to Commandos and The Lost Vikings
already added, unfortunately seems that will fail.
Dungeon Dwellers: Dungeon Keeper-inspired strategy game (Alpha download)
Added.
The Maker's Eden: First-person point-and-click adventure in the style of a motion comic
Added.
I don't know what this is about and I don't want to know.

Is anyone seeing double in the starred KS projects?

Since about 2 months ago or so, the projects I "bookmarked" are shown twice in the starred list :-|

This discussion seems to be more cynical than it really needs to be. There is a difference between wanting to do something and make money from it, and wanting to make money so you do something. While some kickstarters are cash grabs that fall into the latter category (and some better disguised than others), I feel like most are in the first category. A group of people want to make a game, and they want to make a good game. They're asking for help to do it.

If any of you have worked in a small business, you might find a similar difference in approach. Most small businesses are primarily concerned with providing something and people want, and then making money from it is actually a secondary concern. While big businesses are primarily concerned with making money and they'll find or buy something that people want so they can provide it. I know this doesn't hold true in every single case, but as a generalism, it works. I also know it sounds like I'm talking in circles. That's because it's rather subtle difference. The end result seems to be the same, provide something people want and make money, but that subtle difference is the difference between say your local baker giving you a cupcake on your birthday vs Wallmart coming into town and putting the local baker out of business.

Even worse: you're customer paying up front (a bad way to purchase something - preordering is paying blindly and with no information). You're doing this because it's the only way to get the product you want. If these companies could secure financing for their games in some other way, of course we would prefer that. Then we could wait till after the game was made and decide - with full information - whether to buy or not. Now we are buying in the blind because it's the only way.
Actually, as a consumer I like the kickstarter model a lot better than any other video game making model I've experienced. It directly aligns the developer's interests with their core audience.

Fair enough, but assuming a crowd funding campaign does find it's core audience (and vice versa), then it becomes true. Some games like Minecraft managed to do this. I guess it remains to be seen how well the big kickstarters did with communicating their ideas.

No. The whole point of crowdfunding is that you buy blindly, on a bet. Often before the product is even in production.

Well I disagree that is 1) the point of crowd funding, and 2) that I contributed blindly. That implies that I had zero information about the kickstarters I pledged to. Which isn't true.

Let me ask you this, which developer's interests do you think are mostly closely aligned with your own, InXile, Bioware, Bethesda, or the Ubisoft dev making M&MX? For an even more striking example, lets just look at a single company. Which team on Obsidian do you think have it's interests most closely aligned with your own?

Now, obviously crowd funding is not perfect, and actually has many huge problems, but I find that I like these problems and benefits more than the traditional publisher/developer system or the self-published behind closed doors system.

You have less information than when you buy a complete game. This is completely inconstestable.

At this juncture, I feel as though I have more information about Project: Eternity than I do about the last five games I've played to completion.

But not when you made your pledge, which is what Grunker is talking about.

Aye. Though since I pirate before I buy I have full information in everything else than KS. But Tuluse is right.

Quite true, but I'm of the opinion that pledging should stay open right up until release, minus gratuitous tchotchkes and time-limited rewards such as "name an NPC". Many projects do continue to accept pledges after their crowdfunding campaign ends. You can still back Project: Eternity now if you so choose, though the options are very limited.

The castration of post-campaign rewards is necessary to drum up mega-hype during a limited time period, to frontload a large lump sum so that the developers will know their approximate budget, and also so that plebeians will know they're getting exclusive rewards. All arbitrary psychological/logistical reasons, really. Star Citizen has gotten away with months of post-campaign pledges that are nearly as good as the ones originally available and made a gorillion more dollars.

My point is that there can sometimes be a niche for people who don't want to back during the first 30 days, but may do after a period of months when they feel they have sufficient info. Also, if you've got some spare cash, you can hedge your bets by buying something like a signed limited edition and then selling it on eBay or whatever if you decide you don't like the game. Obviously not guaranteed to work if the game sucks total donkey dick.

Hi RPG Codex,

My name is George and me and my fellow developer Attila have been working on our PC RPG game for about 2 years now. In the game you need to survive with your grandfather in a village hidden from the world. Ultimately, you will find out about the reason why the village is hidden, and after that, you will explore the world that has been hidden from you. The game mixes elements from: Gothic, Arx Fatalis, Arcanum, Ultima, Eschalon Book, TES, Thief.

Main features of our game:
-crafting (craft and name your own potions, armors, weapons..)
-farming (to survive you must eat, maintain your farm to always have food on you..)
-building (build your home, craft furniture, make chests for your loot..)
-combat (hybrid turn based, cooldowns, buffs, debuffs, AOE, lots of different spells with truly different mechanics..)
-exploration (explore huge dungeons, find hidden treasure, explore deep forests..)
-stealth (use water arrows to disable distant torches to ensure that you remain hidden in the shadows..)
-lots of clickable stuff (mushrooms, plants, minerals, and other materials..)
-HD resolution, dynamic lighting.. blah blah and stuff like that :)
These are only a few of the main features.

We call ourselfs the Balcony Team :) .. Yes, we are real indie developers.. Our best ideas came when we were relaxing on the balcony.

In case you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
We are also open for an interview.
We hope to create a little buzz before our kickstarter campaign!

Check out our webpage: balconyteam.com

We plan to start a kickstarter campaign on the 14th of June.

George

Wow, looks very nice. Only thing that worries me is all that crafting. Collecting/crafting/housebuilding... Seems more like a more rpg version of terraria than a real crpg. They don't mention any dialogue or social interaction either. Will there even be stuff like quests/dialogue, or will it all be just crafting and "sandboxing"? If there will be dialogue and people to meet and quests to do I will gladly support them. Otherwise, I'm not so sure, although it does look nice and seem to have interesting ideas.

Well, there was one dialogue box in the trailer :P

I guess we'll see once their actual pitch goes up.
