I was afraid all of the environments would look the same (industrial metal grey, but there appears to be much more variety in the art section)

The kickstarter video looks like a lame, claustrophobic action shooter. April's reveal trailer is much more atmospheric and hints at a much better paced experience:

Agreed. Definitely the wrong tone upon which to sell the game. That said, I gave the demo a spin and I was left with a very positive impression. copy/paste

I was surprised by how quickly I was immersed in the game world. Controls feel smooth, reminiscent of the recent Darkwood title. The visuals, while murky, are very well done. The soundscape is moody and thick. Resource management is the name of the game as you explore the trenches and reach different safe/save rooms. I'm not feeling the melee combat as it is, it feels kinda tit for tat with not much strategy, namely b/c you're locked in place while aiming BOTH firearms and melee weapons. Maybe I'm not understanding the wind up mechanic. I'll definitely reload and resume my save as I'm quite enamored with the tone and general pace of the game. Starts off linearly then forks into several different directions. Thankfully I've not noticed much enemy respawning that feels cheep or cheesy. Give the demo a try!

Old timers who know who Phil Foglio is, a metroidvania based on Foglio's "Girl Genius" series. They don't seem to have anything in-engine to show yet, but the studio does have a finished game out which doesn't look outright awful, so I expect they will deliver something. Then again that was seven years ago. What have they been doing in the meantime?

I played both games. Teslagrad is a cool puzzle platformer (metroidvania with less combat, if you will) game. Short, but pretty tight and polished game.

World to the West is a mixed bag. It has some cool concepts (using four characters with different abilities to explore the world) but they are not so fleshed out or polished, resulting a quite short game with rather repetitive gameplay. Also its 3D graphics are less pleasant to see than previous game's beautiful 2D art. Probably it was too ambitious for the budget.

The project above seems to take more traditional, tried and true approaches to the genre.
