Like you say it's a marketing tool but it's also kind of an effort to tap into all markets because even though kickstarter users end up playing on steam they don't necessarily buy games on steam. The Banner Saga people went this way with the second game and said they should have kickstarted it and went back to kickstarter for the third installment.Shovel Knight made, like, an ungodly amount of money for Yacht Club Games. Going to Kickstarter... seems a little weird. They should be able to fund this themselves - I mean, this will make so many times over their goal. Seems more like a marketing tool. Which is fine, but... you know, smaller devs who have no money usually use crowd-funding to make projects that otherwise would not get made. But, we're a decade into the Kickstarter world. It's lost it's initial purpose for sure.
