Yeah, that's my situation; i just don't feel like dealing with the hassle of getting credit card for kickstarter (and the fact that they get 10% or whatever it was for absolutely doing shit doesn't really make me love the site).
Kickstarter gets 5% for having an nice website, Amazon gets 5% for handling payments. 5% is only slightly high for payment handling, for comparison paypal and square charge around 3%.

It's retarded. 5% of hundreds of millions (thousands in a few years) for 'having a nice website'? They can go be sodomized. Amazon getting 5% for 'handling payments' is also incredibly retarded, considering that's only because banks are dumb as only dinosaurs can be.

Pity the internet is anti-competitive that way.

I just want to note, I never said 5% was fair, just wanted to clarify the facts for anyone interested.

If Kickstarter was not worth it studios would be using their own site to raise funds.

It gives visibility to "small" projects. More than 19% of Larian's total pledge amount comes from being featured in Discover and Popular sections.

Hope they get substantially more than the 400.
They'll probably reach 600-700K, unless there appear some spectacular stretch goals which will draw more people in.
Larian is not very popular in the USA, it seems, and that's the country where most people are willing to mindlessly throw their money at KS.

A lot of people in europe do not have a credit card aswell. Kickstarter is pretty USA focused, I'm glad larian is going to make it, the botched launch really had me worried, but the money keeps coming steadily. Also once the funding is met there's a new audience waiting. Lot of people don't feel like pledging when it's not certain a project's going to make it.

Yeah I've got a friend going nuts having to forward updates from 4 different projects to me since I've I got him to pledge for me

Well, I got a mandatory* credit card when I was getting a credit to buy a flat and it's free as long as I buy enough stuff with it. Unfortunately it does not work with Kickstarter (actually Amazon) anymore, so I'm really hoping for a PayPal option with D:OS.
10% or even 5% is a lot, but we can also look at this the other way: 90% of final price going to the developer. Where else could they get that good of a deal? I think only direct sales through own website can top that, and they wouldn't be able to sell much $10,000 packages this way.

*I could refuse it, but then the credit would cost me more.

I think it's more of a cultural/approach thing. People here use debit cards mostly (a card connected directly to a bank account). We spend what we have, not take credits and pay them up later.

Not all debit cards allow internet transactions, though. They're used mostly in retail stores or to draw cash from ATM machines.

I don't know numbers, but I only got mine for Steam (and other such services).
A lot of my friends don't have one anyway.

MicoSelva Sound like a sensible approach. I have a friend in Switzerland who has to go to the bank to put cash on his card, Switz being a country of greedy jewgold stockpiler I guess it also comes down to personal preference. I'm on the other side of the board with a card that only charges me at the end of the month. I got it while I was still a student, so it's not like they gave it to me because I'm wealthy.

Most American debit cards are provided through Visa or Mastercard to avoid this hassle specifically.

YOu can also pay directly with the debit card, but it will draw directly from the bank account, which has not exactly the best conditions once you go below 0.
Of course not spending money you don't have is a pretty good way to prevent high debt.

Prepaid creditcards are gaining in popularity over here. Combines the best of both worlds imo.

Yep, was gonna say that. I use a debit card too but in GLORIOUS AMERICA it can be treated as a credit card online. Seems odd that's not the case in foreign lands, you'd think making buying shit on the internet easier/more appealing would be in the interests of everyone involved.

Actually, the newer debit cards can be used to pay online, just like credit cards, but they also generate the same problems (fucking cvv codes).

It's a fucking joke. You have to use a credit card with like a 10-20% interest rate just to build up a "credit history" so you can actually have a credit history that allows you to make bigger purchases in the future, like a house or car. A lot of apartments will do a credit check and if you have no history they won't let you rent unless you make a lot more than what it costs to rent the place. (3-5 times more) They start you out at like $100 limit on your credit card and slowly raise it up to $500, $1k, $5k, $10k, etc. You're effectively forced into using it just to make a reasonable living. It's like an extra tax or something on everything you buy.

Seems pretty reasonable that a bank would expect you to have some kind of positive credit history before they hand you a $200,000+ home loan.

I love credit cards! I got my first one as soon as I turned 18. I've never once paid interest on a balance, and I get hundreds of dollars in cash back every year.
