I think your second statement is likely more true than your first. A popcorn RPG implies it's both popamole and exciting, rather than popamole and dull as dishwater. Yeah, I get the Star Wars angle tho, I just don't posses that kind of dedication to the brand.

KOTOR is a very good game, but it's biggest fault is broken prologue/tutorial. It is too long, it is dull, and it introduces you to different combat mechanics (and forces you to spend points in them, like blaster rifles and pistols) that you will forget after it, because the lightsaber will always be your main tool.

Enjoyed KOTOR 1, but agree that it's constructed in such away that playing it through to the end makes it a repetitive slog.
Never finished it myself, think it's definitely worthy of praise, but can also see why it's not up to today's standard of gaming.

The first KotOR, back when it was released, was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've ever had. Surprised at how much hate it's getting here, but then it is the Codex.
I also enjoyed the game for what it was. But 2003 was a simpler time and I had not yet found the Codex so I didn't know my enjoyment was for naught.
Group hug. I'm a KotOR fan and, if not proud then at least accepting. Gameplay is shit, but if you're in the Star Wars mindset then it's a fun ride. I also genuinely did not see the twist coming. OMG! It blew my mind! Every other person who expressed an opinion said they predicted it from the first scene.
I agree with you guys that the game is enjoyable. I would never praise it as an 'amazing' game with well thought out mechanics etc. But, if not taken very seriously, it's petty fun. Last year I got in the right mindset and played it as an edge-lord sith warrior. Made every edgy decision I could,
like forcing Zaalbar to kill Mission.
It was pertty funny overall and combat is over quickly if you build smart.

True, the first planet is definitely the weakest part of the game and an incredible slog to play through more than once. (there is a mod to skip it of course)

Really the SW angle is all it's got going for it, which was more then enough for me.

Also, I never got into any of the expanded universe (always came off as fan-fiction to me), but KOTOR being completely removed from the OT made it interesting to me. Not saying it's a "good rpg", just saying I enjoyed it a lot AND THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT :0-13:

It's a boring game that has nothing except for being a game where you can create your own Star Wars character and make em run around in Star Wars-themed corridors and kill Star Wars-themed bad guys.

Well, I guess having a better entertainment value than the prequel trilogy is a plus too. But really it gets boring after 10 hours or so, even back then.

This is probably my second favourite Bioware game. I think people forget this was basically a console title ported to PC so the gameplay and level design degenerated a bit to accommodate that (some might argue also the console audience). I didn't enjoy the stupid dog-fighting minigames but I found the storyline and the way they utilised the SW license worth the trip. There are some genuinely great NPC companions, environments (the whole Sith world sequence is great) and voice acting. The Bio-twist is nicely signposted but not completely obvious and you can really be evil at some points if you want to be (like getting your life-bonded Wookie to slaughter his best friend just for kicks).

Whatever your thoughts about the dated gameplay and limited world design if you're a SW fan this is certainly worth playing.

I'm rather fond of KOTOR. It hearkens back to a simpler, more innocent time where fans would be satisfied when romances would end in a kiss and a heartfelt (if very cheesy) declaration of love, rather than serving as fuel for hundreds of pages of fan speculation regarding the chemical composition of Tali's sweat. While it's undeniably formulaic, you could at least tell the devs actually gave a shit and seemed like they were passionate about their work, which is a hell of a lot more than you can say about anything they've done for a very long time.

Played KOTOR a few years back. Was better than average for a D20 game, liked linking that and Star Wars. I've played worse, I'd say it's above average in story, gameplay and replayability, but wouldn't put it in my top games list. It's not as bad as people are pissing about.

Really didn't like that all roads led to light sabers. Sure, you could use a ranged weapon, but lets not kid ourselves. It was a waste of points. KoTOR2 at least gave you a light saber earlier. On the other hand, if the movies are any indication, lightsabers are fanservice. So the developers should get a pass on this.

Liked the karma thing, thought that added something. Made it worth seeing both sides. Dialog was bad in parts, but wasn't Bioware flexing the full might of Derp, like they did in every game thereafter.

The ending ruined it for me, though. Not the actual ending, just a long, long, long fight running down corridors to get to the ending. Maybe that was supposed to give it an epic feel, but sending me dark jedis to kill in one every 10 seconds for an hour felt like something Doom would do, not this.

As a developer, you'd be in a no-win situation trying to do something original with the Star Wars universe. There, I said it. You don't like the story? Tough shit. I'm sure when Bioware bought the rights there was 1,000 pages of terms and conditions they were saddled with as well. They did about as well as could be hoped trying to please the gay Star Wars fans, and crpg purists.

I'm more interested than ever to have the Top 70 games voted following the 2012-2016 voting procedure: rate the games you have played from 1 to 5, and see how things turn out. Makes me believe KOTOR would be in a much worse position.

It's easier to tear down than to admit something isn't completely awful I guess.

Also game design has changed (not necessarily improved) a lot since the original KOTOR came out and a lot of the criticisms seem to be about the mid-2000s patented Bioware "4 Hubs + a Twist" design formula. I'll admit at the time I found this a bit repetitive but in comparison to the general rubbish they've spewed out since DA2 it begins to seem more like a comparative golden age in retrospect. With the exception of the NWN campaign (which was a PC exclusive anyway), KOTOR, Jade Empire and Dragon Age were all enjoyable games despite slavishly following this formula and also suffering from fairly severe consolitis with regards to the gameplay and level design.

It's no coincidence that the last really decent Bioware games (DA and ME2) began development before the EA takeover.

I enjoyed them. They're not perfect but the good aspects outweigh the poor. I guess ME3 is okayish in parts but it wasn't compelling enough for me to finish. DA2 and DAI have been major disappointments.

I'm not intending on getting MEA at this stage unless critical and fan response is overwhelmingly positive.. Bioware is pretty much dead to me now but I'm not ashamed to admit the company has given me considerable enjoyment in the past.

To grasp that reality, you need the concept of "good for what it is".

Wasteland 2 wasn't good for what it is; it was supposed to be a Wasteland/Fallout successor, with good turn-based tactical combat.

Numenera wasn't good for what it is; a Torment successor, with good writing and thought provoking existential philosophical musings.

KotOR is good for what it is; a Star Wars game, which is basically all about space fantasy planet exploration, light sabers, raw emotion that leads to the temptation of the dark side, and cheesy writing.

Additionally, KotOR2 was imho less good for what it is as a KotOR game than KotOR1 due to being a buggy piece of content-cut garbage at release.

Fan patch pretty much fixed it years later though.

I still think KOTOR is an impressive game when you consider the goals that Bioware were trying to achieve. I recall reading that they had a white board in a room with 'Star Wars themes' on it and based off of that they just tried to recreate the typical Star Wars experience (that the prequels were failing to do). It would be hard to say that they did not hit that goal dead on. It is a bit disappointing because the game is probably too similar to other Star Wars material but I am sure they delivered the product they wanted to.

I thought it was a fun game at the time. Don't really want to replay it but I doubt my opinion would change. The opening is trash but for some reason this was an era where developers thought that you needed to slog through hours of Jedi-less gameplay before getting to the fun part of Star Wars (Jedi Outcast II did the exact same thing and I believe it was released around the same time).

The biggest problem I have with KoToR is that it is sooooooo easy. This is the problem with KoToR2 as well but at least there it is mitigated by having to actually think about your conversation choices. I replayed Sith Lords after the update and then tried to go though KoToR again but got really fucking bored.

That doesn't mean I didn't like it back in the day but I have to admit it has not aged well.

KOTOR pulled a Planescape in that they let you heal completely from the inventory without any time elapsing in the game.

The sequel is even easier but that was probably for the best.

I'm on the camp that played it just to get into KOTOR2. At the time I was taken aback by how much Mass Effect took from it, since it was basically KOTOR minus Star Wars. Later, I started the glorious sequel only to get dropped in Peragus or whatever was called the initial area.

Good thing KOTOR2 gets much better. :dealwithit:

KOTOR was not a good game. I had some fun playing it. It was a guilty pleasure.

KOTOR had Star Wars atmosphere and just for that was good for what it was...in 2003.
