PoE is free and has shit tons of content. I thought the selling point of Last Epoch was something in the line of 'arpg made by the players, for the players'. Having microtransactions blurs the line between the competition, and competition is pretty strong right now (namely Diablo 4 and the looming PoE 2).

I wouldn't call it free. Path of Exile's stash tabs are effectively the box price and they can easily exceed the cost of a game like Last Epoch, Grim Dawn with all the expansions or even Diablo 4. Aside from paid stash tabs you're still left with $42 armor sets and paid consumable skin transfers (transmog).

This armor set for example is $42, it's one of the cheaper ones.

If Last Epoch can sustainably finance its leagues while undercutting GGG's god awful MTX pricing, it'll be pretty competitive after a couple good leagues. Path of Exile 2 would have to slow the hell down at endgame and lower their pricing by 60-70% across the board for me to even consider playing it.

Not gonna defend PoE's pricing policy as it's fucking inane. Then again, it's up to you and your impulse control.
I only really paid for accessing the beta, although it was a very different game back then.

Now, as regards Last Epoch, I "demoed" it recently.
Best thing I liked about it were the tooltips on everything, basically all the information you could have asked for when speccing out a character was given, clear and to the point.
Even on character death you get a surprisingly detailed report, down to the type of damage you can consider getting more resistances for.
I also liked that each skill has its own mini-skill tree to further customize it, although not all nodes felt equally fleshed out. Some would indeed radically transform
the skill's utility, but a lot of nodes were basically boring filler +1% to this and +2% to that, keeping you from getting to the good stuff.
I also noticed branching quests. Always a plus to break the tedium in a h&s. Fucking weird that no other game even tried
to have a semi-random quest selection for each game as Diablo 1 did.

Sadly, that's where the good stuff ends, as far as I am concerned. When it comes to mechanics, the devs' heads are screwed on the right way, I give them that,
the jury's still out if they can actually make a fun game out of it. Perhaps it gets better further down the line, but the early game was extremely tedious.
I stopped paying attention to the story really quickly (there weren't any really strong characters to carry it and it doesn't help that time travel bores me to tears),
the maps were basically stifling, long ass corridors with barely enough room to maneuver, even the areas that were supposed to be more open.
The selection of enemies early on was also rather poor, the bird people I thought were decent, but after your first time jump it's basically just turds in different colors
which blend with the environment, and every now and then you get an odd lizard-thing mixed in.

It's not all bad, a few monster designs managed to stand out, but so far it just feels... mediocre.
The game's made on Unity, probably also borrowing stuff from the asset store which shows... and not in a good way.
The worst bit, as far as I am concerned is the combat, lack of enemy variety... it just doesn't feel satisfying.
Remember those zombies from D2 expansion, the ones that shuffle about, and you can mostly ignore them, but every now and then they get this burst of speed and whack you with their rusty swords?
Or those oversized charging chickens from PoE? Last Epoch's encounter design made me miss the most basic of things to just spice things up.

It really doesn't. All you need is one supporter pack, which costs as much as Last Epoch does, and not only do you get some MTX and other shit for free, you also get more than enough points to buy all the stash tabs you need (which is really just a single quad tab, and a few other select ones like currency, map and fragments/scarabs). It doesn't "easily exceeding the cost of a game like Last Epoch". That's with OG prices and you can get them much cheaper during stash tab sales (theres always at least one one at the beginning of each league). Comparing that to D4 in particular is absolutely insane. If you feel PoE is expensive for a game this massive, that can easily give you thousands of hours of entertainment, when all you need is a single 30$ pack to buy all the tabs you need, or 60 if you really feel you need some armor MTX, then you're a fucking idiot.

While both games look kinda shit, I think PoE is designed around stuff like skill MTX, pets, portals and hideout stuff being a big chunk of their sales. Last Epoch still has a long way to go before they can focus their asset creation on MTX stuff, which is why the boxprice is more then adequate, and I hope that game is massively successful, as I had a great time with it all throughout its development so far.

I genuinely hope that PoE will steal LEs crafting system, the in-game loot filter editor, as well as the drop-only mods that made the game more interesting after they released the Legendary Potential crafting. Dungeons are also great in Last Epoch, I really enjoyed all 3 of them. PoE crafting, especially meta beast crafting, can go fuck itself, and I'll host a party if they ever remove Beastcrafting from the game.

Boss design is great, but most of the random mobs are just kinda boring and you don't really approach your monoliths in any different way, which is fine in a zoom-zoom game like PoE, but when the goal is to slow down combat and make individual enemies matter more, there needs to be more unique enemies and abilities.

I'd rather the devs spend their limited time where it matters instead of having to fine-tune the entirety of items in the game for every perversity their trooned customers can think up in their sick heads. A character generator is a massive dev time sink that offers no tangential benefit to the game unless you are perverse. Conversely, the absence of any indicates that the devs are in control.

I have no idea the techincal state of the game, steam says I played it for 17 minutes which includes changing settings etc and starting it over a few times just to be sure I did not miss a button to change my sex/race or build a character somewhere..they spent a lot of money on graphics, thee is no way they could no offer the option. They did not want to for some reason.

Yea, the reason being that when they started development they had an extremely tight budget. And they wanted to emulate Diablo 2 and Path of Exile which both also have gender locked classes. The devs have said that char gen is an option later down the line, but it is very low in priority.

that was the other thing that actually made me rage refund the game. I was going to give it a try anyway and I gave my chracter a female name because the black paladin looked female to me..then the Paladin started speaking in the back story before the game begins, and I guess the black paladin is supposed to be male? So I had actually called my 'male' paladin Lisa..it fucking pissed me off then I raged quit and and raged refunded right after...probably did not help that I like 5 shots of liquor before the whole thing started, made me less relaxed about the whole thing.
