Yeah, there is a lot of games that i bought but haven't booted yet. Grimrock for example i only ever created a party and went up a couple of floors. I would tentatively say that quite a lot of gamers never finished games they liked, for E.G bastion where i know at least 5 people who -loved- the game but never finished it.

'Finishing' a game is a poor way to say if the public like it, especially for this genre.

"You beat the second level!" type achievements are interesting, though. My guess is those completely pointless "Kill 300 of mob type A" achievements are meant entirely for analytical purposes.

I loved Grimrock, but hard difficulty is pretty fucking hard if you choose the "wrong" schools of magic for your casters. It kind of felt like soloing an IE game, where movement and timing are more important than tactics and party composition. Still, I'd love to see a game like this with the depth of Decklin's Demise. I'd probably spend forever in that sort of dungeon.

True, but I'm not talking about the 8% that beated the game, I'm rather impressed that only 40% of the players did the second most popular achievment, 500 melee attacks. How long must one play to get this, considering you got 4 characters and mosnters have a lot of hp? You should be getting it by the 2nd floor, the 3rd at most, yet 60% of the players never went that far!

Think about that, 60% of those 600.000 players, fucking 360.000 buyers never went past the 3rd floor! Would those 360.000 buy LoG 2? The developers may be counting on doing a better/bigger game and going beyond 600k, but the thruth is they might get 240k only... it's a VERY dangerous situation.

I'd agree if this were another type of game. But because it's a dungeon crawler where they've got an engine they can rely on and add to I really doubt their next game (excluding expansions) is going to be anything but Grimrock 2: Same Shit, More Options, in which case most of the development seems like it would be on a similar scale to the first game. Unless they can find some way to piss money on pointlessly upgrading with endless cutscenes and a Picard cameo it seems like there's very little they could do to make even 100k sales not a profitable or at least sustainable outcome.

Really didn't enjoy it =/ Didn't get why it was a weird realtime fusion thing. I ended up avoid all enemy attacks just by kiting, which feels bizarre in a game with such a simplistic movement system. I'd be more interested in a more fully turn-based sequel. Even then, though, I'm one of those Torment fags who likes RPGs more for the werds and less for the combat. Even if it'd been made unambiguously turnbased, Grimrock's combat would still have been boring as shit.

Still, glad to see them doing well! Even products I don't like exist for a reason I GUESS WHATEVER. =3

You didn't get why it was real time? Did you not play Eye of the Beholder? It was essentially an homage to that whole series.

You're a homage! DM and EoB have the same basic gameplay.

I didt get very far in the first game, seemed fun though I just dont have much time and got distracted and ever got back to it. I hope the sequel includes some outdoor environments, cities and forests and such.

So basically, you could make a game with pretty graphics, not really give a shit about the ending and you'll make a motza?

According to latest stats, only 8.7% achieved "Master of the Dungeon, Complete the game". Still, is that the fault of the morons playing it because OH THE SHINY or a sign that the developers need to make it "more accessible" and "streamline the gameplay" to "appeal to the mass market"?

The interface certainly could use some streamlining. :smug:

I am one of the people who bought it but didn't play it much. It's not a bad game but I'm not a fan of the genre and only bought it because I hoped the character system would be more complex than it actually was.

It's nice the devs made some loot but Grimrock was incredibly dull and lacking in content, probably one of the most boring dungeon crawlers I've ever tried. Basically just a pretty looking mod tool with a test game passing for a single player experience. Just feels really lazy and lifeless, much more so than the Dungeon Master it wishes it could be. So many better choices in the 'genre', even a console Wizardry like Tales of the Forsaken Land is a lot more engaging to trudge through and looks great on PCSX2.

Sort of. Grimrock is incredibly, uh, "streamlined". For all its Dungeon Master wannabeness, it feels more like Stonekeep. I spent one evening to go through a half of it, and never had an inclination to continue. Still good for what it is I guess, but I sure hope they would make something more complex and ambitious with this cash now, not Grimrock 2: More of the Same.

The special thing is they will make a game with over 10% completion rate? Awesome.

I think it's typical for people to buy games and not play them right away, but it sounds like it's just streamlined to absolute pointlessness. I liked stonekeep but this looks like it plays itself.

Reviving a genre is a tricky thing especially if you want to cater to the mainstream. I'm sure they intentionally kept if fairly simple and short as a first project. You don't want to make something overly elaborate, get in over your head financially, and then end up bankrupt when no one buys it.

A small studio decides to revive rt blob crawlers. They are honest about it from the beginning, they couldn't have been more clear about what kind of game they are aiming to make. They work quickly, professionally, frequent updates devoid of bullshit. They deliver the game in a decent development time, it's exactly what they promised, with hight production values to boot. Response? Banal, shit, boring, why not turn based (lol), you have to tango (lol x2), no one will buy the sequel, bwaaah.

Meanwhile:

1. Diablo 3? Bros, this game's so shit, let's discuss it for 300 pages.
2. Mass Effect? What a shit game yo, 198293 pages.
3. Obsidian are making another shit/average game with rtwp and mmo mechanics? Why, that's clearly awesome, let's donate tons of money.
4. Some hacks are harping about their vapourware that still looks and plays like shit after 10+ years of development? I totally support this!

If you were looking for an answer on why can't we have nice things anymore then that's probably something to consider.

I just hope that as LoG1 took DM as an inspiration, LoG will take cues from CSB (and not DM2).
