How does this fare against modern Persona games?

I saw people saying it's like Persona but better.

The only way this could be true is if all you care about is combat and you skip all dialogues and cutscenes. But then why bother with Atlus games at all.

No man, this is maybe on P4G level, and I say this only because I fucking hate Teddie. P5R and P3R are a level above.

Gameplay is broadly better, especially combat, but there are very few characters worth getting to know at all and the overarching story is bland as can be. Kind of an inverse persona game in that sense.

It's a spinoff on the Persona formula with an extremely chaotic, all-over-the-place quality in its writing quality, its plot, its visual design, etc. You can go along for the ride if you enjoy the Persona-ish gameplay loop and the general atmosphere of a Grand Adventure. Just don't expect anything to actually make sense, and remember, you have the power to skip dialogue*

*Persona itself will one day pay for this grave sin.
"Look, a door has opened!"
"Do you think we can walk through now?"
"We won't know until we try."
"Let's open that door and get closer to our goal, yo!"
"Door, here we come!"

Thank you to everyone posting on here. I have wrapped up Octopath Traveler, have just started Unicorn Overlord, and have been considering what my next game purchase should be. This game, Yakuza Pirate, and Kingdom Come II have all been on my wishlist, but the Yakuza thread has everyone bitching about the game that no one has played yet and the Kingdom Come II thread has fallen into a series of posts about minorities and the woke agenda. I can't even tell if the Codex consensus is that Kingdom Come II is a quality experience or not.

You guys are talking about the story and the politics of the game, but have been pretty focused on the gameplay. I just wanted to take time from my lurking to say that I appreciate that and that I'm probably going to purchase this later this year.

Kingdom II is a truly stellar game. It would be a shame if you miss out on it because of codex nonsense.

Btw, if you haven't already played it, I would strongly recommend SMT V: Vengeance on the PC. I think it's the strongest JRPG that was released last year, and might even be my GotY 2024, though I still need to play some other games to finalize that opinion.
