The problem with keeping it contained in the tournament is that there are no stakes. The whole idea of MK1 is that if the Earthrealmers lose, Earth gets swallowed up into Outworld. If it's just some people fighting for the sake of fighting, there's no story. They should just avoid Kronika levels of absurdity and it's going to be fine. Well, MKX also wasn't fine, soooo who knows. I think they should get better writers.

Only one person in the original Mortal Kombat game had any idea of what the tournament was even about. Everyone else was just there for person reasons.

Also, the idea there wouldn’t be a story if it was just about a fighting tournament is fucking stupid. Every character can have their own little reason and story going on. Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s story wasn’t even related to the overall bigger picture of the series and they’re the two most popular characters in the games. The more Mortal Kombat becomes about the story of Mortal Kombat the dumber it gets. The series is at its best when it’s just people fighting in weird tournaments, and the Outworld stuff is just to explain why a wizard and monster people are in the games.

Funny enough, that wasn't the idea, that was a concept introduced by the sequel. MK1 really was just a martial arts tournament. For my part, I wouldn't mind seeing that kind of stripped-down approach again after decades of elder gods, realm invasions, reality-shaping trinkets and time travel.

I'm pretty sure I'm correct on this one, iirc it's explained in the tie-in comic book. At least I can't find anything contradicting this.

It's not. The comic makes reference to Shang Tsung taking over the tournament from the Shaolin, thus providing Liu Kang's motivation and Outworld is mentioned, but just to provide context for Goro.

I also want some kind of low-level stuff, damn the main prize in og MK1 (before MK2 retcon) was just staying alive! But we are propably heading moar into Dragon Ball / Avengers stuff, war against Titans from one of the MK11 or other cosmic shit.

The clock tease would seem to be saying they’re going back to Mortal Kombat 1. And if they’re going back to MK1, then it'll probably be Dragon Ball in that the original Dragon Ball did fighting tournaments.

If I were them, I'd start deconstructing the whole thing by this point. Why does this tournament keep repeating would be my first question. Why is it always so brutal and merciless would be my second.

Yeah, looking at the old ‘92 comic John Tobias did, Liu Kang is just fighting to regain control of the ancient Shaolin Tournament that Shang Tsung has been controlling for 500 years. In the first game Shang Tsung is just using the tournament so he can steal people’s souls and grow more powerful.

It doesn’t get introduced until the second game’s intro that Shang Tsung was sent to “Unbalance the furies and doom the planet (Earth) to a chaotic existence.” In the game (and comic) there doesn’t even seem to be anything special about the Shaolin Tournament specifically either, it was just the means by which Shang Tsung was trying to accomplish his goal. The tournament specifically being about protecting the Earth I’m guessing got introduced with the movie. Although in the comic for Mortal Kombat 2 the second tournament kind of seems to tie into that, as it’s used as some kind of loophole to let Shao Kahn invade without tipping the scales of order and chaos into chaos or something.

Looking at the Mortal Kombat 2 comic, Mortal Kombat was already getting a bit too convoluted for it’s own good. But it did make for a really cool intro for Mortal Kombat 2. I mean, as I got more into fighting games I definitely had a falling out with Mortal Kombat; but I can still remember the first time I saw the Mortal Kombat 2 arcade cabinet with that intro playing on it, and how fucking cool that was. That MK2 cabinet was just asking to be played.

I really have no idea what's happening in that trailer. Nothing radical, that's for sure. Alternate timeline Shang Tsung is coming to take our women souls. Again. The other guy with Kung Lao is mortal Raiden, I'm assuming?

With this one we'll have three Mortal Kombats, which is not to be confused with Mortal Kombat 3.

No, it’s two Mortal Kombat games, and one Mortal Kombat 1. It’s just Mortal Kombat 1 isn’t to be confused with the original first Mortal Kombat from 1992.

Now wait until there’s a prequel game called First Mortal Kombat.
