Greetings warriors of Calradia!

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is a rags to riches adventure that encourages players to forge their own path through Calradia to climb to the top of the social ladder. How, or even if, they get there is completely down to their own choices and actions within the game. In previous Mount & Blade games, this rise to power revolves around a single character, but with the introduction of permanent death and clans in Bannerlord – two new features that work hand in hand to create a deeper, more immersive experience – some of the focus needed to shift slightly away from the exploits of an individual character. This is where the topic of this week’s blog steps to the fore: renown.

Veterans of our previous games will already be familiar with renown, but for those of you that are unaware, please allow us to explain. Renown is a system that represents how famous or well-known someone is in Calradia. In Warband, it was a kind of score that kept track of players’ accomplishments and opened up new avenues of gameplay for them – once they had made a name for themselves.

With Bannerlord, the key difference is that renown is now attached to clans rather than characters. Clan members can earn renown for their clan by performing a number of actions, such as completing quests, winning battles, or competing in tournaments. By acting in the name of their clan, they are effectively increasing the fame of the clan as a whole.

Gaining renown in Bannerlord will see the player’s clan progress through different tiers, which opens up access to greater capabilities and additional parts of the game over time. For example, to act as a mercenary for a faction, the player’s clan needs to reach the second tier before their offers will be given any consideration. Likewise, renown is also key when it comes to pledging vassalage to a kingdom. It acts as proof of the player’s capabilities and shows that they are ready to be involved in the grander events that are unfolding around them.

But, as with everything we are trying to achieve with Bannerlord, we weren’t content with simply repurposing an existing system without taking a closer look at how it could be improved to bring more to the game. With each tier that the clan reaches, they are rewarded with an additional party slot, an increased companion limit, and additional caravans that can work under the clan’s tutelage. Additionally, the player will be treated differently depending on the renown of their clan, such as with the order of battle.

This progression gives players breathing room to explore the game and take some risks, even in the face of death, because an eligible heir will be able to continue his or her parents legacy with the clan’s reputation intact. And, just to be clear, renown isn’t something that players will need to chase after to progress. Simply by playing the game, players will naturally accumulate renown over time through the different actions they perform.

We think that these changes to renown make for a more engaging gameplay system which works alongside and compliments the other new systems that feature in Bannerlord while providing players with a real sense of progression as their clan rises from obscurity to being known throughout Calradia!

This ridiculous wait has really drained my excitement for the game. I want to buy it and play it still, but it's frustrating

Kind of like Black Mesa. I was so excited for that, I've owned it for years now and have been waiting to play. They just released an update

Looks like renown is broken into tiers instead of a point score. Wonder if this actually changes anything, like only certain acts will give points toward the next tier if you're famous enough.

In gamescom demo last year one player started with a brother. Maybe they can just sit and wait for the brother to take renown.

Sure, just spend a couple in-game years sitting in place and just foraging for food, while your NPC brother goes out adventuring. Pretty novel take on the genre, tbh.

Who the f cares about multiplayer in this game, just give us a good single player.

I do. Yea I played it only as single player for years and years, but then discovered a gem while trying out different multiplayer mods. Basically in Napoleonic Wars there is "commander battle" mod where each player leads a squad of up to 30ish AI bots. You can be cav, inf, or arty. Server with big maps and up to 40 players. Usually battles of 800men. In EU there is a server for such battles that are still moderated by admins, and have a special ruleset for balance. It's really fucking fun to play. And there's no minimap, no voice speak, only a basic chat so things often get very chaotic. Even basic cooperation between players results in huge advantages, but it's very difficult to create it..

I'll post some cool screenshots when I get back home from work. I'm actually more looking forward to this mod in bannerlord than the singleplayer so..

Funny thing is that in old m&b the bigger you grow the more difficultà gaining renown is (if you solo Sea raiders you get more than fighting actual battles), now It will snowball, when your gets bigger means more sources of renown.
If you are a pacifist merchant then nobles will hire only you anyway as military leader because you have some relative that Is a good Warrior? Or you are hired in a block with the entire clan? Quests are individual but these kind of contracts?

I like how you think 7 fucking years is an acceptable development period for something that barely advances in tech and ostensibly has a full-time staff working on it.

Games are not developed for this long with no end in sight without serious issues. The story remains the same every time. Someone in management chased trends. Played a load of games and tried to get the devs to add features they thought were cool. But of course these managers would change their minds multiple times. Throwing out months or even years of work because the boss decided to be Bipolar. The fact one of the interviews Taleworlds did states that they restarted development 3 times is very telling. That's 3 times the management had a vision of a cool game and then changed their mind. Throwing everything out.

Meh, they scrapped castle building. Features doesn't require a new engine, they redone because new engine. Some stuff like hand made maps are done by them without community suggestion.

They release it and no matter how good it is people take the piss out of it by joking that it wasn't worth the insane near-decade-long wait, or they delay it longer and dig themselves even deeper into the hole.

The problem isn't just the wait, it's that they've been teasing what appears to be a near-finished game for years now. They've been showcasing fully functional battles with formations and all since 2016 at the very least, so what's the damn holdup? What have they been spending the last couple years on? Most of the devlogs talk about shit that has already been implemented a long time ago, or crap that shouldn't take more than a couple days of dev time. Had they stayed quiet and started hyping the game up a year before release, nobody would even think about the long wait, but since they've been showcasing what seems to be beta-level gameplay for several years, it became a meme.

LMAO why? Consumers are not entitle to have this game. The turks have every right to keep this game in development for the next 50 years if they want to do so.

I didn't say they'd necessarily done anything wrong, but people will be pissed regardless. You can't tease a game for seven years, let hype build up (and that's mostly out of their control, I know), keep delaying it and pushing the schedule back further and further without people eventually getting irritated by it. Like thesecret1 said, it doesn't help that they've been teasing a seemingly-complete game for literal years at this point with no explanation for the delays and not even the slightest, vaguest plan of what the next step towards release is.

It's the same with HL3/HL2: Episode 3 - of course Valve don't technically have any obligation to tell us anything about it, but they promised the third installment years ago (the original plan was for the "episodes" to form a trilogy the length of a full game), and after years of radio silence people eventually either give up hope or get actively annoyed, and the resulting game can never live up to the expectations that have been built up.

Comments on this give me cancer. "This is it?!!" Sorry, what did you expect? It's Warband MP, but prettier. It was always going to be Warband 2, not Mordhau.
It must be incredibly frustrating for the devs to read this shit...
Because I know for a fact they tried new features, that they tried changing it up, but either the changes didn't work, or Warband players who are in the beta flipped their shit, so they rolled things back.
Not sure the timing was a good idea, they seem to be focusing on getting the game ready for Gamescom right now, not the beta. So it could've been in better shape to show off.

So yeah, it's gonna be a lot like Warband, no fucking shit.
