To expand: encounter numbers are done in hexadecimal, which is base-16 and goes from 0 to F, with A through F being the equivalent of 10 to 15. So if you see, for instance, DE, what you're seeing is encounter number (14 x 16 (the D) + 15 (the E)) = 239. IIRC that floor only goes up to the high 2's in terms of encounter number normally. Should be a huge red/caution flag for you (which is not to say I didn't do the exact same fucking thing and get my shit pushed in when I stepped on a DE encounter out of curiosity the first time :D). OTOH around floor 18 or so, you'll get a couple 62 encounters that you can win given good equipment and a healthy dollop of luck. Beating those gives you access to some really nice swords. It seems to me like the general rule is, if you're within 2-3 of the floor's general encounter number (so, for instance, you're on a floor that generally has encounters in the range of 3- and you see a 5- or 6-), you can give them a try and test your luck, with a decent expectation you'll be able to run if you start getting crushed. Anything higher and you're asking to bring the B team in.
I just got to the 21st floor and I'm having a blast. I need to go back and hoover up all the companions now that I have the lesser 'scensions and Wanderer Tracker (or whatever it's called). I saw a couple references to "seeing" KO'd wanderers. Is that something special I'm missing, or was it just referring to tracking the character to their tile through Wanderer Tracker and then getting a corpse instead of a live char?
Anecdotally it seems to me that the best three starter chars are Guyselblanc, Elva and Shunga. Guyselblanc's PP goes up like a rocket the first 20 levels, makes him a perfect fit for any high level magic or accessories you find. His HP is solid too, he's been competitive with Elva all the way through level 25. He's slow though (68 base I think). That hurts a bit. Elva is just a machine- super high HP, tied for highest base speed (72) out of the starters, and competitive with Guyselblanc in PP once he hits his stride in the mid-teens. Shunga is tied with Elva for highest base speed, and has decent PP, but her HP is abysmal... she really is a ninja, hah.
I haven't experimented with all chars yet, but the ones I did try out (Nanga Pahr, Sesspare, Rodovich, Maynasar, Ilke) haven't impressed so far. Right now I'm using Ilke in the fourth slot. Any suggestions from among the starters and the earlier pickups?
