I did until it corrupted my saves. It was pretty cool, but way too buggy and the omniscient tunneler bug especially killed it for me. Seems like it got fixed though, so it should be worth a try now.

I remember insanity can be pretty dumb though. Lol stealth headshotted a raider after witnessing him murder a caravan? HOW COULD YOU KNOW HE WAS HOSTILE MAYBE HE JUST WANTED TO TRADE HE WAS TRYING TO TURN HIS LIFE AROUND HE COULD HAVE BEEN FRIENDLY YOU MURDERER SANITY LOSS ROFLMAO.

Can you recommend a few bare essential mods that increase difficulty, enhance the survivalist aspect, and address any significant outstanding issues? I'd like to do one long completionist playthrough, and remain challenged for as long as possible.

Project Nevada is simple to install and use...has loads of features / settings to increase difficultly

I'm running a modified version of the above, only took a few hours to install it all (the longest part is that god damn Nexus site and its constant fuck ups), and it adds loads of good stuff without breaking anything and it's a lot harder than vanilla.

Personal favorites:
-Weapon sound mod. Jesus christ this and the difficulty make shootouts so fuckin satisfying when you pull them off. My guy is a shooty angry legion supporter so I just stormed into the tops and shot all the chairmen and Benny too, satisfying as all hell. He's pretty fuckin spooked if you just walk up to him, imagine how he feels when you, the ghost of his past, shoots him dead just late enough for him to see it was you. Slower reloading/backwards walking also adds to it.
-Pipboy 2500 for obvious reasons.
-Realistic lighting. No more pissfilter.
-Classic grenades/books/super mutants. Makes it feel more like it shares the world of the classics. Oh and the font which I just realized I had incorrectly installed.

NMC's texture pack i hate that pack. Sure interiors textures look better but they completely change art design for many places. Especially annoying is that it changes default pebbles and rocks textures that doesn't fit previous art design. Couple that with nevada skies and you have something like on picture above. Complete color fuckup.

True to Caesar. I just finished my first Legion playthrough myself. Do yourself a favor and play Lonesome Road, it was great for a Legion character.

Been planning an independent lawbringing cowboy-character next (still not even half to 7 playthroughs!), will check through your mod list to see if I find something I can't live without.

Instead of making a mod with its own story they decided to, err, modify Obsidian's. So they explain 'more' about the Platinum Chip and Mr. House. I think Mr. House is one of the best characters Obsidian ever wrote, so I don't see why some modders felt the need to fuck with him.

At least they aren't charging it, so they aren't as bad as Beamdog.

I was looking for a hair mod to make my character completely bald or having some other short hairstyle other than the buzz cut, for those 2 times in a 100 hours you look at your character in third person.

I was scared off by every hair pack since it looked like they were all made up of 300 styles of female anime hair. :D Which do fit the setting somewhat if you're a Mad Max-esque raider, but.

I tried this mod and loved it during daytime. It looks so much better.

Unfortunately, I couldn't stand how dark it was at nighttime. It looks better, the darkness is realistic, but it played way worse. You need a thousand mods to light up the world, give the player a good light source and tweak the AI to behave realistically in actual dark areas to make it good.

Is there a mod that only removes the orange hue without changing the game's brightness levels (I.E. making the game darker than the latest Batman movie)? I tried Fellout before but that mod was even darker than this one.

LARP-wise the darker nights are pretty cool, and it gives you a reason to sleep regularly in hardcore mode. It does look like I'd expect a post-apocalyptic wasteland to look like. And you might actually have a use for night-vision potions and such now.

By obscuring all the ugly bits with black it looks like a game from 2015 instead of 2010, so there's that too.

I also added a pack brahmin mod to the game because jsawyer hates me carrying shit myself.

Most of the mods that I use are aimed towards trying to make the game (mostly) play like a version of STALKER that has a stronger showing of its RPG elements.
The gameplay in New Vegas is still complete garbage despite being a marked improvement on Fallout 3. But, as far as I'm concerned, everything else the game offers more than makes up for that.

Because the setting, storyline, and quests that already exist are good enough to make the game an appreciable offering in spite of its glaring gameplay flaws (which I blame Bethesda for, like everything else I dislike in it), I don't need very many more. Most of the quest mods/"third party DLCs" that I've looked at also just don't seem particularly appealing to me. Someguy's quests are all pretty good, especially The Inheritance (I really wish he actually finished Firebase Zulu though because that'd probably be my favourite if he did), and I like some of the misc quest mods, but everything else is superfluous.
I also never bother with A World Of Pain anymore. It just turns the game's exploration back into Fallout 3. Very few of the dungeons that are added by it serve any purpose. You go into them for loot and kill XP, and since I'm limiting loot and turning off kill XP entirely it doesn't add much of those things for me. Seriously, cut this out of your load order entirely. You won't regret playing without it once you notice your game hasn't ground to a halt due to how much crap has to be loaded at once during the lategame (even with the 4gb patch)

Edit: Actually, would anybody suggest any decent quest mods? I took a look at that "Autumn Leaves" thing posted above, but I'm not sold on the promotional material they presented to me.

Is there a mod that makes npc's actually take cover or shoot back or something, when I attack them from a [hidden] position? I mean, I know I'm supposed to be hidden, but they should at least get behind something. Difficulty modes seem to have no effect on long distance combat engagements where critical hits are so prevalent, with a guns/crit build/equipment. Now I know why everyone plays a talky sniper.
