new info

The rule we’ve set ourselves is that it’s a game first, not a simulation. Space has to be fun, and everything you find in it should offer interesting ways of playing. So for instance, a black hole could be a really cool gameplay element, but maybe a supernova isn’t so much.

Murray revealed that users will experience weather events on planets as well, such as Rain, dust storms, snow, blizzards, storms and more.

Weather on alien planets may also feature radioactive and toxic hazards

So still nothing new nor incredibly gameplay-changing. I love how they take standard features you can find in many games which don't really affect gameplay, while trying to make them sound revolutionary. It reminds me of when they described how there will be a tactical element to combat and their example was shooting smaller ships before shooting larger ships.

These people are scraping the bottom of the barrel and they're coming up empty.

This game will be good because the main developer is a white pale nervously laughtering male with beard, this means:

pale - he spends most of time infront of PC making the game and not going out.
beard - he spends most of time infront of PC making the game negating his personal hygiene
nervous laughter - he is an introvert and outcast spending most of time infront of PC making the game avoiding social contact, probably a virgin also

These are the prerequisites needed to make a quality PC game, I feel safe that a game like this is in such good hands.

I want to prove you wrong with alpha-looking socialite devs that made good games ... but I can't think of any

Wooow it has rain. I bet none of those weather effects, except maybe the radiactive ones, have any negative implications for the player or have any kind of affect on the planets flora and fauna either. Animals will still be stomping around come rain or shine and not seek shelter if the weather sucks. Can't wait to see not-dinosaurs stomp around happily during a acidic rain.

Actualy they've said that animals will behave realisticaly, they will search for places of water, some animals hunt other animals, they seek shelter, hide from hazards and they get scared and run away when you shoot weapons near them.

I'll believe it when I see it. As the people above said, I've heard this before from Spore Fable. I'm happy to be wrong, but I don't trust modern devs to spend time and effort on stuff like this that most plebs would consider trivial.

Sean Murray On No Man's Sky - "These Ducks Know How I Feel."

But it's amazing how Sean Murray seems to see no end in sight. A procedurally generated universe is bound to through numerous unforeseeable complications your way and the poor man often seems overcome by these frustrations.

His own frustrations are etched across his face and when he can't speak about the madness of developing No Man's Sky, he lets ducks do the talking for him.

Translation: we're a bunch of inexperienced kids who bit off more than we could chew, but blew waaaaaay too much money on a flashy PR campaign way too early, and now cannot back out of the massive hole in which we find ourselves.

To think, this was the main title that made me think getting a PS4 would be worth it.

Seeing the gameplay at that last big show kind of sealed it for me though.

Why would you get a PS4 for a game that will have a PC port

I didn't even know about the port. I thought it was a Sony third party or something.

Besides, I only game on a laptop (for PCs). It limits my options with this AAA stuff (I have an Xone though).

First few newfag jokes were expected, but I don't even get it anymore. Don't tell me it's serious.

I'm probably older than all of you, general gaming wise. Sadly.

This is the Codex. You're fresh meat.

And you're already talking about getting a console just for this.

I'm not going to get this though.. It looked sparse in the last vid I saw. Lots of promises in a lot of these big sprawling space games, but none of them end up much better than Freelancer (this looks slightly better).

But yeah, I admit to getting consoles for some things. I made a mistake thinking this was PS4 only.

More interview / info

We are attempting to do things that haven’t been done before,” says Murray. “No game has made it possible to fly down to a planet, and for it to be planet-sized, and feature life, ecology, lakes, caves, waterfalls, and canyons, then seamlessly fly up through the stratosphere and take to space again. It’s a tremendous challenge.”

Minecraft creates a unique world for each of its players, randomly arranging rocks and lakes from a limited palette of bricks whenever someone begins a new game, But No Man’s Sky is far more complex and sophisticated

The tens of millions of planets that comprise the universe are all unique. Each is generated when a player discovers it, and is subject to the laws of its respective solar systems and vulnerable to natural erosion. The multitude of creatures that inhabit the universe dynamically breed and genetically mutate as time progresses. This is virtual world building on an unprecedented scale

The color of the water in the atmosphere will derive from what the liquid is; we model the refractions to give you a modeled atmosphere,

Similarly, the quality of light will depend on whether the solar system has a yellow sun or, for example, a red giant or red dwarf. “These are simple rules, but combined they produce something that seems natural, recognizable to our eyes. We have come from a place where everything was random and messy to something which is procedural and emergent, but still pleasingly chaotic in the mathematical sense. Things happen with cause and effect, but they are unpredictable for us.”

Players will even be able to mark the planet as toxic or radioactive, or indicate what kind of life is there and then that then appears on everyone’s map

Suggested rule of thumb for everyone: If the (original) cost of all the exclusives you want to buy for a certain console is not bigger than the cost of the console itself, don't jump in and buy that console yet. So that means the PS4 needs 6 or 7 good exclusives that makes purchasing it worthwhile.
:hero: good luck with that for the next 2 or 3 years.

I wonder how will you reply to this Sean Murray comment

We are attempting to do things that haven’t been done before

and this

No Man's Sky is far more complicated and sophisticated than Minecraft

Fun fact:

Sean Murray sold his house to start the company. :M
