Can you land on planets in elite?
So why won't make you?
Because I wouldn't fool myself into thinking that that feature alone would make a game, let alone an enjoyable one.

And no, you can't land on planets in Elite(1984). But you can in Elite 2(1993) and Elite 3(1995). And even the first Elite uses procedural generation. Which is very interesting because, quoting from wikipedia:
The Elite universe contains eight galaxies, each with 256 planets to explore. Due to the limited capabilities of 8-bit computers, these worlds are procedurally generated. A single seed number is run through a fixed algorithm the appropriate number of times and creates a sequence of numbers determining each planet's complete composition (position in the galaxy, prices of commodities, and name and local details; text strings are chosen numerically from a lookup table and assembled to produce unique descriptions, such as a planet with "carnivorous arts graduates"). This means that no extra memory is needed to store the characteristics of each planet, yet each is unique and has fixed properties. Each galaxy is also procedurally generated from the first. Braben and Bell at first intended to have 2^48 galaxies, but Acornsoft insisted on a smaller universe to hide the galaxies' mathematical origins.

My major problem with the games (other than the developer looking like a hipster – at least until he shaved for the recent videos) isn't the technology. Sure, the principles aren't as new and unusual as they make them, but that's marketing and they did make a pretty environment with an enormous scale.

I just don't see the game in all of that. They didn't say how long it will take to "reach the center of the universe". If it takes too long, the novelty of visiting planets to gather resources to be able to afford to visit new ones may wear off quickly. The appeal of the sandbox probably depends on how interesting the (procedurally generated?) factions and NPCs around you are and if there's "immersive" emergent gameplay / storytelling when you participate in faction wars.

Now I bet that the extensive variety in color schemes on these different planets is there to hint at the variety in their composition. Different colored skies come from different kinds of stars, indicating differences in temperature and radiation, and different atmospheres, indicating potentially dangerous gases. Who knows, maybe you can even collect and condense valuable resources from the land, air, and sea of particular planets.

I bet encounters on these planets would be totally harrowing too! Even the smallest creature could be eventually deadly because its biology is completely alien. A small bite could lead to a deadly disease, and you'd need to hunt its kind for samples that you would have to pay a nearby station to research for you.

The different sizes of planets make the universe look very intimidating, too! I know I would think twice about landing on a planet twice the diameter of Earth, because there's got to be an intense pull on all my ship's systems. I might crash, or even run out of fuel and be unable to launch back up until I risk my life trudging over a mountain to a rare mineral deposit of some kind.

I hope I can use all these various celestial bodies to my advantage in combat. I could risk burning out in the atmosphere of a gas giant to lead my less cunning opponents to their demise. Perhaps I could land on the dark side of a moon and engage a silent running mode to throw off bounty hunters searching for me, then attack from behind when the opportunity arises.

I sure am excited for No Man's Sky! I bet for sure that they'll show anything like what I just described eventually, after all the gaming sites stop jerking off the developers over procedural generation and terrain deformation.

this is true actualy and confirmed by thedevs, there are different temperatues, radiation, atmospheres, toxicity etc

This might be probable, as there is a night/day cycle like you would expect it to be, and they said you could shake of the drones pursuing you.

Seems this game has actual depth, they are just PRing the most 'hype' intensive stuff for the console crowd but there are also less known features they talked about as (and working as you would expect them to)



-black holes
-wormholes
-black space
-gas giants (but you cannot land on them)
-twin stars (binary star)
-temperature and humidity
-comets
-meteors
-mining asteroids
-you can land on asteroids
-not all planets can sustain life
-Some planets are deathtraps, with radiation or other hazards that will kill you in minutes.
-you need fuel
-some animals hunt other animals

Too bad your computer won't compensate if you buy this shitty game.
For some the amount of time they've already invested into the game before its release means even if they do not play it at all - they come out ahead.

It's a good a time waste as any really. If they are enjoying themselves then all the power to them for being able to get that entertainment value out of the way early.

Hell, even Diablo I and II had "procedurally generated" items, levels and monsters. This is just set in space.

And incidentally, Minecraft is hugely successful precisely because you can edit the terrain around you, and build your own contraptions within the environment. So far though, NMS sounds like a terrain generator without the content. How the combat plays, how you upgrade your ship, what you can actually do with the terrain (harvest enough resources to build a full-scale replica of the USS Enterprise for example), that's the stuff that will determine whether the game is actually interesting or not, beyond a superficial exploration simulator.

It's not the world that matters, it's what you can do in - and to - that world that makes a game.

Yes, you can walk in any direction for days, depending on the size of the planet, even weeks and weeks. Sooner or later you will come to the point where you started, are spheres, and while you spend that journey from day to night and back to day. The day / night cycle is governed by the planet's rotation on its axis and its orbit around the sun. So maybe if you viajases at the right speed, you could walk the planet would always day because you'd be moving with the time zone. Each planet rotates on its axis at different speeds and each solar system have different numbers ... No tratatamos soles to create a technical demo: try to make a game, but we try to be as realistic as possible in our own universe."We can teach a Artifical Intelligence to win at chess, but never be able to prevent call your planet by the name of your genitals"
