It's obvious that what Murray said in interviews was a metaphor, just like the game is an artistic expression. The words are not supposed to be taken literaly, anyone who does that dumps the responsibility on himself.
Lol, he straight up says you'll be able to see other players in game, what is that a metaphor for/how else can it be taken?

He nowhere -exactly- says that you will be able to SEE other people.

From the pcgamer article not one page back:
If real-time contact with other players isn't possible in No Man's Sky, it would fly in the face of an interview Murray did with Game Informer in December of 2014, where he stated that “you can see other characters, and they can see you.” More recently, Murray has been abrupt in clarifying that No Man’s Sky "is not a multiplayer game," and that people should not go into it expecting that experience.

Man oh man, what the fuck is it with this game? I barely followed it, mostly just with the stuff from this thread, so I guess I missed the point where the passengers of the hype train became its engine or something.

Like, even I fucking know that it was never touted as an MP game. Like, fucking ever. Even this thread, even Makabb's posts said this much. "You will have limited interaction with other players, like trade info and see other players name shit". Ok. I don't know, guys, which part of this sounds like "You can play together with your friend"? Was it the part where, as per some Makabb's post, you wouldn't be able to see the changes that other players do to worlds? Yeah, the dev team was real fucking coy and cute about skirting the issue but every tell-tale sign was there: No fucking multi at release. Suddenly, it's a shock. What.

Just about everything else as well. I don't know what people expected from a budget pseudo-indie made by a team of what, 4 nerds? A game that closely emulates reality? Something incredibly complex, with dozens of deep systems, procgen, complex reactive AI that is capable of interacting with procgen... What the hell.

It was clearly a casual space hike/pretty scenery exploration game from the get-go, and from what I see, it's mostly the great job of the fans for masterfully filling in the gaps of the uhhs and ahhs interspersing Sean Murrey's speeches.

I can understand Reddit shitting their pants all over about this, but I really expected a little more foresight from Codex at this point.

and again you are hearing what you want to hear.

No direct words from Sean Murrays mouth came out that would say 'you can see other people', it's just wishfull thinking to suit the agenda of opposing no mans sky.

You know, I hate lying sunuvabitch developers as much as you guys but this thing can be just a server fuck up (them peasant consoles) or a simple bug.
Or poor bastards were just not yet prepared for that kind of luck and was thinking to sneak this with a little suprise patch after release.

Straight from the horse's mouth not good enough for you. "..You can see other players and they can see you." It's like arguing with a brick wall.

Two players finding each other on a stream in the first day - that has blown my mind. We added a 'scan for other players' in the Galactic Map to try to encourage this happening. We wanted it to happen - but the first day?

We want people to be aware they are in a shared universe. We added online features, and some Easter Eggs to create cool moments. We hope to see those happening... but too many of you are playing right now. More than we could have predicted. It is a testament to how amazing our network coders are that Discoveries are still working at all. For instance over night we hit 10 million species discovered in NMS... that's more than has been discovered on earth. WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

Why would you even say that then? Does he think people expected the NPCs to not react to you at all? I don't know of many games where "the NPCs can see you and you can see them" is on the features list.

He said that other -characters- can see you, he just meant NPCs. And there's a very small chance of encountering other people because they haven't implemented the feature. Simple as that, you people just misunderstand his cohesive and punctual way of talking about game's features.

Well you have to put something on the back of the box.

Fair enough, though to be fair Spore was actually incredibly disappointing because Maxis did promise deep systems, and even released several "alpha version" simulations that looked deep, complex and interesting - and never made it to the finished product.

I expected a casual game from the moment they announced it as a tentative PS4 exclusive, and my expectations never changed. It's probably a 75% sale game for me to look around pretty sceneries and name animals in liue of Dickus Ultimus Maximus.

At first there was supposed to be no NPC's, so at the time it was a big info

So instead of saying "there are now NPCs" he says "The NPCs can see you and you can see them"? As opposed to what? NPCs that are invisible and can't see the player either?

LOL.

More likely that Sean Murray was pulling a Todd Howard and now fanbois are trying to cover for him. Occam's razor and all that.

Yeah, his marketing speeches were usually quite lulzy, though to be fair, the gaming press questions and interpretations were pretty amazingly retarded as well.

Gaming press: "Will this game have planets?"
SM: "Uhhh... There will be, like... planets, possibly yeah. You might be able to land on them and maybe... Hmmmmmmmm. Aaaahhh."
Gaming press article: "NMS confirmed to have planetary systems teeming with life! SM hints at much more, will there perhaps be base-building elements and civilizations on the planet surface? Only time will tell!!!!!"
Stupid fans: "OMFG THIS 4-MAN NECKBEARD TEAM WILL DELIVER THE GAME OF THE CENTURY I AM EJACULATING BLOOD RIGHT NOW"

Heh.

I have to make a game where you can see NPCs but they can't see you, it will be the best seller of all time.

"Other characters", doesn't necessarily include other players.

Surprise!
:troll:

In other news, in Battlefield 1, an upcoming 3D action multiplayer game, you can see other characters and they can see you.

You also forgot the times when Murray said that it was possible to meet other players, but it'd be highly unlikely because of how big the game is. His latest tweet on this subject is, again, as vague as ever. It's not a yes or a no, just an odd maybe that leaves some people hanging and wondering if the feature exists or not. Obviously it does not as we've already established that the game is listed on Steam as Single Player only and that the PS4 version does not require an active PSN account, which is mandatory for all PS4 games to be played online. He's clearly pussyfooting around the subject when all he would have to say is "No, it does not have Online where you can meet up other players face-to-face" instead of this universe being so large crap.
