The fact that NMS doesn't require an active PSN account is pretty damning that it doesn't have any online functions. I was watching the stream of the two guys who tried to meet up and they kept fidgeting with the game trying to see each other. One of them even paid for the PSN to see if that would help, which it didn't.

They probably just didn't implement any online element besides the discovery thing. lmao

I bet the galactic auction house is also not player-driven.

A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Will this be worse than SPORE? I mean bigger disappointment.
Nah. People learn to temper their expectations. It's not like anyone at Codex would have been butthurt after Wasteland 2 when the later KS projects allegedly failed to deliver.

Are those vids in chronological order? In the first one it almost looks like he wanted to correct for a split-second when geoff said "massively multiplayer" but pussied out and had to roll with it from then on.

So I read the "to the fans" letter that the Twat In Command penned to his throng of loyal fans complete with fancy font and letterhead, I feel like barfing. The guy is so fake, trying to always smile as he's tearing up inside, he was going on about how this game if it makes you dream just 1% was worth all of his time investment, oh and your $60 investment too of course! That part he doesn't mention. Overhyped to death so he could rake in the money, priced extremely high because he wants that AAA hype and AAA $$$ and now he's trying the hardest with a smile on his face to lower the inevitable pitchforks.

So this is apparently the ending to the game:

I'm not sure what to say here. You find the galaxy center, you get some 2001 inspired graphics and you restart. Okay then.

Ok, so I had a chance to play a bit more. Quick thoughts:

*possible minor spoilers*

The on-the-ground combat is pretty weak.

There seem to be a lot of upgrades (to the ship, suit, and multi-tool) which I like.

I haven't had any space combat yet. I stumbled across some freighters that I weren't sure if they were friend or foe, so I left them be.

I've been on 3 planets so far, and probably the biggest difference in gameplay is how hostile the environment is. One planet was really cold and the temperature shield needed constant recharging. The 2nd planet was more forgiving. On the 3rd planet I've mostly been flying around from location to location and not walking as much.

Ive been on 3 space stations so far. Two were pretty much the same. One guy to talk to, plus you can talk to/trade with any of the pilots in the hangar (which were constantly coming and going). The 3rd station seemed abandoned.

I'm not a big procedural generation fan, but it's done pretty well in this game.

I was trying to shoot my way through the door of an abandoned machine shop, and those sentinel robots attacked once I did. On the other 2 planets they didn't bother me.

I can see how this game could become pretty repetitive, but it hasn't bothered me yet.

Does anybody remember the 1986 game Starflight? NMS reminds me of Starflight. I loved that game and played the hell out of it back then (it was really unique but also repetitive). Admittedly it's been 30 years so my memory is a bit fuzzy probably. Maybe they aren't as similar as I'm thinking.

There seems to be a few different ways you can approach the game. Trying for the center of the universe or trying for some weird sentient alien relic.

I do like that there's no tutorial or hand-holding so far. You're left to figure out things for yourself (granted, none of it is rocket science).

The water looks awful. Not even as good as Morrowind.

Overall I'm enjoying the game still. It's not amazing, but it's pretty good.

For people complaining about it being priced as a $60 AAA title.... Fair enough I guess, but it's honestly better than most AAA titles (which are usually garbage IMO). I'd rather pay $60 (or actually $48 if you count the 20% off new titles with Amazon Prime or Best Buy Gamer Club) for this game than most others available on the PS4.

Apparently one of them wasn't logged in to PS whatever service. So as much as I like schadenfreude, the article is a non-starter.
Weird because i read it doesn't use PSN for anything.

I would assume it has to, because how else would you identify a player? And then what, NMS team builds their own server farms?

From reddit (someone that followed the stream):

5:20PM : Both players are relogging in the same exact spot to see if they end up "in the same lobby" (if thats a thing). It looks like at this point one player has revealed he does not have PS plus, (not PSN) however ign reports neither are required. So that player is signing up

5:28PM : Both players now have PS Plus - and are relogging. It seems that one player now has a bug where its showing him disconnected from online services- so they are trying to fix that

5:35: Online activated on both games - both have relogged, time looks be synced up so they see the same planet/time of day (correction: they just both eventually happened to see night time together due to all the relogging) - still no indication of them seeing each other - or seeing each other's planet destruction. We are back to square one
