The game sold 1.5 million units. Just how many of those could be from fans of the books to have made any tangible difference, to have received "undue" praise due to the books? I bet the sales in NA alone must have made at least 500K units and I doubt anyone outside Poland gave a shit about the preceding literature or even knew about it.

When the Witcher was at 600K sales, it was 140k in Poland, 200k in Russia/CIS and 250K in the rest of the world. I think I heard that when it was at about a million it was 300k Poland and 400k Russia/CIS. Those latter sales quite significantly stem from the value of the Witcher as a franchise.

Just because we don't give a shit doesn't mean this has no value as a name. This is a franchise of best-selling books, a film and a series. This is like saying Night Watch has no value because they don't give a shit in the US.

Wasn't even a good metacritic score.

For a game you can classify as Western AAA, high 80s is mediocre. For a game from Eastern Europe (yes, Polish, you're Eastern Europe), it's pretty high.

It's disgusting how they messed up the story just so the player could "omg, play as GERALT HIMSELF wow". :decline:

At first the main hero was not Geralt. They had been creating different witcher, but during the process they realized, that he's getting more and more similar to Geralt, so they decided to just use Geralt.

And then they decided just not to bother with the fact that Geralt being in the game makes zero sense?

Fuck the fiction, if you don't mind me saying. What reason is there to not put Geralt in, if it gives us a good character to play with versus random witcher with bad concept developed by, well, developers?

Who cares if it breaks with the books - their literary value is going to be miles better than the game's anyway.

And I'm a fan of the books, mind you.

The only thing I see proven so far is that it faired well in the first period due to the books. 1.5 mil is something else entirely, though :)

I don't understand what you're trying to say.

North America was not a significant market for the Witcher as denizsi claimed based on...nothing at all? Numerically, most sales were in CIS/Eastern Europe. It failed to reach 200k in North America in half a year, that's a flop of enormous proportions.

And 1.5 million is nothing for a game of the Witcher's budget. With most sales coming from country's with low pricepoints for games (at least 700k) or being bargain bin (at least 500k), I'd be surprised if the game turned much of a profit. But it was never intended to.

TW wasn't some hinky dinky game from Europe. It got major pimpage in the West. Afterall, BIO themselves advterised it on their site, pimped it in interviews, and not to emntion the BIO name is on the box. The game was heavily advertised one way or another in NA.

Not too many Eastern European game companies can boost about that.

Don't know about D, but I only spoke from personal experience. You claimed to have something more, however. And 1.5 million not being much - I disagree. There's no way to really know since I'm pretty sure what CDProjekt aimed at is classified, but it's pretty much from a nobody-company.

Are the 1.5 million the first edition only or does it include the Extra Special Director's Cheesecake Cut edition, btw?

EDIT: Also, Volly, was Bioware's name on the fucking box? It sure wasn't in Denmark, that's for certain. Why the fuck would Bio's name be on the box?

Bioware had its name on the box because CD Projekt used their engine. I also recall Bioware helped a bit during the development process as well, though I can't seem to find any reference to that at the moment.

Of course, the engine. I'm an idiot. Kindda weird they're not on my box. Perhaps it's because I own the aforementioned Extra Special Retard Edition?

Personal experience is kind of a stupid thing to base something on when you're talking about a franchise that is popular elsewhere.

What? Stop making no sense.

You can disagree all you like, it's fact. CD Projekt has publicly stated (I'm pretty sure, but it could be from one of my myriad soures too :P) both that at one million sales the game had barely returned on its investment - and that's without factoring in the significant cost of EE - and that their intention to begin with wasn't to make a hefty profit but to establish a franchise internationally.

Too bad they went for the huge loans which left them with such a huge debt that they had to condense the franchisespoitation into one title, this.

Yes, if it was, it would've been ignored completely. Instead, it was a PC-only game running on an outdated engine, with a shitty localization to boot.
This isn't GTA IV or Killzone 2 we're talking about, to compare it to European titles with actual AAA status.

Once again, you prove your idiocy. TW/CDP had the BIoweenies backing them up including being pimped on BIO's site which has quite a few potential customers.

I know I never would have (been suckered) into buying TW if it wasn't for BIO pimping the game/letting them use their engine. I'm sure there are pletny of other TW puchasers 9suckers) who did the same thing. Hell, it's probably one of the reasons why the Codex was all over TW articles - because BIO was pimping them out.

Sorry, but TW may not be GTA 1V or KZ2 but it's no hinky dinky game from Euorpe. He had major backing from a Western publisher and a premiere western developer.

Oh, and btw, BIO doesn't make games that have audiebnces as alrge as GTA1V either; but nobody gonn argue that Bioware is just a hinky dinky Kanadian company living in igloos. FFS

Duuuuh... My point was I never claimed to be able to prove my standpoint, you did. I was just having a conversation on a bloody fucking bastard internet forum until you came along with your "facts" (two of which are not linked to yet, by the way).

Stop being a dick. I cry easily.

*chuckles* Your prime example of an expansive PR campaign is being "pimped" on a company site. I hope for your sake that you're joking, because that's idiotic, even for you.

"Letting", really?

Anyway, you might've noticed I never said it's hinkie-dinkie yet you keep talking about it. Why? It's not hinkie-dinkie, it's not Western AAA either. Get over it.

Wait - are you saying Volly might be exaggerating your opinion in order to avoid any sort of legitimate discussion regarding what you actually said?

I'm still tripping out over his coherent and well-written critique of DA: Awakening. It's like his permanent heroin fix died off for a minute or two and he started to make sense... then shit went pop and the juice came flowing back.

What we've got here is failure to communicate.

1. There is nothing wrong with the sex cards from the first game. They were stylized and the player could CHOOSE to pursue getting them or not. They were not an important part of the game, therefore the complains about them are unfounded. Unless you are a retard that cannot see the forest because of the trees.

2. The second chapter of the game (the crime quest) is absolutely brilliant and anyone who criticize the game without finishing at least that chapter, it's a retard.

3. For any developer, to sell 1.5M copies of your first game is an achievement. Who ever denies this truism, must develop a game and prove the opposite.

4. The game was not perfect and it had a somewhat boring combat system, however it is a good RPG. It has more mature themes than anything DAO and ME offered and it was actually engaging after the awful start area.

5. Why are people stuck in dick fights? Neither zed or volourn have arguments, but they still spit shit. What is the point of this forum if no legitimate discussion can take place? Ban the motherfuckers.

6. The new Geralt face looks like shit. I wish they didn't change that.

Oh, pleasde. Advertsiing on every major gaming site and magazine as well. And, that 'company site' has millions of potential customers to opurchase your shit. Sorry, but, the fact that TW sold about 2mil copies is not that surprising consideirng it was pimped a lot.
