From what I can tell, NWN2 uses the same engine as NWN in the same way that Half-life used the same engine as Quake 2.

Youa re lucky Binary, I haven't played those games so i can't comment on the comparison.

VD: Don't be stupid. NWN2 is the Aurora engine. Why do you think Mr. Sawyer whines about the ahrdcoded Aurora stuff, dumbass?

The graphics engine is new, but the game is still powered by the Aurora. This is a fact! It likely saved quite a bit of time, and remember NWN2 has been in develolpment for 2+ years much like BG2.

NWN2 wasn't rushed.

Period.

El stupido, did you miss the "based on the Aurora engine" part?

The graphics engine is new, but...
But we all know that it takes half a day to make a graphics engine...

It likely saved quite a bit of time, and remember NWN2 has been in develolpment for 2+ years much like BG2.
Yeah, yeah, whatever, Volly. You are right, it hasn't been rushed, in fact, it should have been released last year.

I understand. We'll talk about it when your period is over.

denizsi, I can't even begin to imagine the kind of insecure little loser-user one has to be in order to show that kind of "magnificent e-penis syndrome" in a discussion about the question wether a toolkit can or can't add value to a game. Do you feel THAT threatened really?

Seriously, whenever you think you've seen it all another one creeps out of the shadows and starts scraping the bottom of the barrel.

edit: don't bother replying, I stopped taking you serious a few posts ago.

while his posting style clearly could be described as juvenile he was utterly correct in his arguments.

It is because of said writing style that I can no longer be bothered to reply to said arguments. Should they be presented in a different fashion I might reply to them, as I can't see how you - or anyone else - would come up with the authority to judge them correct or incorrect. However, I somehow find myself in the role of the guy defending a game he or anyone else doesn't even know - and I frankly won't lose any sleep about NWN2 sucking or not. I'll however maintain my oppinion that NWN as well as NWN2 (propably) can entirely be seen as an engine + toolkit for user created content. The quality of the sp has nothing to do with that.

Well, whatever, it's always fun being insulted over the internets, isn't it. I mean, how many "stupid little fuck" and "stupid little cunt"s can you fit into a single paragraph about a game? And how does "...but we are talking about the vanilla game and nothing else." count as anything else than trying to tell people what they can and can't calue in a game / discuss in a thread about said game? I'll leave the other anal nitpicking aside - I'm not going to start typing my posts on a games site with the interpretations the juvenile can come up with in mind.

"based on the Aurora engine"

Except it's not 'based on the Aurora'. It *is* the Aurora.

*sigh* Boring day, Volly?

Ferret: The Aurora engine and toolset both have had major revisions, in some cases wholesale rebuilding. The graphics engine is brand new, which we call Electron, and so it supports some of the latest tricks that modern video cards can do. So programmers have been hard at work making dynamic shadows, lighting, normal mapping of character models, etc. all work and look pretty. Since we had a new graphics engine it means that all of the artwork is brand new, and that has meant the artists have had a lot to do. We need to make enough assets not only to cover our single-player story, but also for the community to make their mods.

Feargus:

Q: Neverwinter Nights 2 has been developed with the Electron engine, which is itself an adaptation of the Aurora engine used in the first game. What does the new engine enable you to do compared to the Aurora engine?

A: Gotcha. The kinda way that the Aurora engine works in the source code, if you can think of the engine Bioware used in Neverwinter Nights, helps if you think of it in multiple parts. It has its tool set, its rendering engine, it has a multiplayer component, a Dungeons & Dragons component, and then a gameplay component that runs all the scripts and the dialogue.

What we did was take the graphics engine and pretty much deleted it, and that was replaced with the Electron engine, which is ours, so that was written entirely from scratch by our programmers. In essence I cut off a pinky and put a different pinky on, so it was a completely different thing. The same with the Tool Set, although the Tool Set borrows more from what was originally there than the graphics engine. The graphics engine is an entirely different thing, whereas the Tool Set follows some stuff but is pretty much new.

The other things such as the multiplayer and the gameplay components is being worked on and enhanced and not really changed a lot.

VD, why do you even bother? You should work on AoD instead. Remember the law of power that men are rarely convinced by words, for actions are much more persuasive.

The facts prove otherwise. Again, if it's no longer the Aurora; why does Mr. Sawyer continue to whine about the Aurora engine holding them back?

LOLOLOLOLLIPOP

And, that link you gave doesn't disprove what I stated. I never denied the graphics engine was new. Dumbass.

NWN2 is powered by the Aurora.

Period.

I'll proudly step up and say I really loved about 50% of KotOR2, and its other 50% is just an immense embarrassment of lost potential. If MCA & Co. can realize more of that potential in NWN2, I'll be excited. The primary reason for my cynicism about the game is the original NWN, not Obsidian;
Same thing here. I'm actually looking forward to it, and hope it's nothibng like NWN1. I liked KOTOR2 (except the ending and combat), and I'm not completely convinced that MCA was kidnapped by aliens and replaced with a cyborg yet. If it has a good plot, I'll buy it.

Again? I hate Atari. They already screwed up so many promising games by releasing them several months before completion...

He has a point though, especially in light of your Feargus quote. If there are 5 parts, and they only replaced two (graphics and tool kit) and upgraded the others, the game is working with the majority of the Aurora engine.

And if they have their teams set up right, they can do a lot of testing independently of the different changes. (A lot of graphics testing can be done without worrying about the toolkit and gameplay (rules wise), and vice versa.)

Methinks that the graphics (this isn't just a collection of polygons and cheap effects anymore) and the toolset are the biggest parts for this development team to accomplish than anything else (okay, and maybe the DM client :D ).

Heh, yeah right. One of the most common excuses given when cornered. I can understand that some people might be disturbed by foul language, but I don't believe this to be the case here. Isn't it funny that people reply to someone, say things and later add something like

edit: don't bother replying, I stopped taking you serious a few posts ago.

If you stopped taking me serious, why did you even bother to write that post and mentioned how insecure I must be? Why oh why? Just like Nael, who illogically replies to people he doesn't care about what they said. You shouldn't unless you want to create drama. No insults here ( they are coming the next paragraph, though, so beware teh horror! ), let's hear your answer now.

And how does "...but we are talking about the vanilla game and nothing else." count as anything else than trying to tell people what they can and can't calue in a game / discuss in a thread about said game?

I'll tell you how, little cunt (I'll stop the foul language whenever you'll give a rational answer and not try to dodge shit) : I never told people what they can or can not value in a game and I dare you to fucking show me where, if I did say that! You stupid piece of shit, you deserve each and every insult I throw at you.

You value mods and toolkits? Good for you. Your original post which spawned this whole mess wasn't about that though. You justified the release-time game with hundreds of hypothetical mods which will allegedly be out a year from now, which simply can not be an aspect factoring into how good a game is on its fuckin own, and if your brain is incapable of processing that information, you indeed are a stupid piece of shit who should be happy that I remind him of his sad situation at every given opportunity.

You also went on with shit like "I can do this and that through my profession" when it's obvious that you have followed the development in some way, otherwise you really would have to be a psychic. Cunt.

Now either take these on the face like a man and give some real, rational answers, or simply ignore the whole thing without running like a bitch with a comment like "I don't care what you say but I still reply anyway".

You don't want to reply to me? Fine, reply to other people who pointed out, in a civilized manner, why you are wrong with your original post. This alone is enough to show why you are being such a cunt because you just can't answer and try to use my hostility as an excuse. Cunt.

About the insults; I just find a different kind of spiritual satisfaction in insulting people whenever they give me reason.

Denizi PMed me and tols me to tell you you're a girly man and have a fully functioning vagina.

I imagine that was sarcasm, but I don't get it.

Just to point out, MCA didn't write NWN2's plot. His job IIRC was/is to write the characters espciially the joinables. So we get to praise and bash him on those. Thankfully too as the NWN2's story doesn't sound too impressive. Average at best.

Besdies, KOTOR2's story was meh, and its writing was blaisse. PST's story was good but overrated. His bestw riting came in FO2.

NWN2 uses the Aurora Engine. This is a FACT.

Well, to me an actual game engine should be more than just the graphics elements. However, that is NOT generally the accepted case.

So if they call it the electron engine, it is the electron engine, and JE is just being retarded/loose wih his definitions.

Since the DM and toolset is completely decoupled, obviously they have nothing to do with the engine. The game rules are also presumably largely decoupled as well, but no guarantees there because this is from bioware, after all, land of the retarded programmers. The original product/engine, that is.

If we're going to start bringing up laws named after people, this may be an appropriate one methinks:

Which is what I said - "based on the Aurora engine", but Volourn insisted that it is THE Aurora engine.
