Obsidian General Discussion Thread

Lots of doom and gloom in this thread. Remember how many people said Obsidian were headed for extinction after Aliens? They said the same after the 84 Metacritic debacle. Obsidian are still alive.

I am very disappointed that they announced some third-rate tank MMO shit instead of a proper RPG, but this makes business sense. They are basically getting money for nothing. Lately they are selling their in-house technology to other developers and this keeps a nice cash flow in to the business, while not taking up too much time from their own developers. It is basically money for nothing. They can keep their people working on RPGs instead, and won't be beholden to bastards like Bethesda who have no qualms about fucking them over.

Actually this shows that you are wrong.

They are working on their own IP in Pillars of Eternity, and they are assisting other companies in making two MMOs that are original IPs too - and not sequels.

I wonder if this makes you realise how stupid you look.

I'm surprised you could see the screen to type that with MCA's dick and balls on your face.

If not for PoE, this would be Feargus Urquhart's Tim Cain moment. :)
Are you sure? I'm pretty sure Feargus wouldn't let all those Slam Dunks escape.
He quit Interplay about eight months before Interplay shut down Black Isle because he saw the writing on the wall.
I think his point is that Feargus doesn't have the same, "we only want to make projects we care about" attitude as Cain.

He left Black Isle because Interplay was literally running out of money not because they wanted to make games like Dark Alliance.

We at Activision-Blizzard are proud to announce our partnership with Obsidian Entertainment for future Call of Duty titles. Obsidian who has become known for its warfare related titles is the perfect fit to our long-standing franchise. Call of Duty: The Nameless Ones will release in Summer 2020.

“All independent developers are trying to find their way in this new world of Steam and tablets and free-to-play. A lot of us look at ‘Is there money in making the $150 million console game?’” Urquhart said. “With the interest people have had in Pillars of Eternity, we’re looking at how we can work in this space and make the type of games we want to play.”

I dunno, I think things would be different if MMOs were the only thing on the table. Lack of passion about what you're doing results in hackwork.

It was difficult (they are so big!), but I managed.

Welp I'll be sure to necro this thread and your initial reply when Obsidian goes belly up.

I might even post a picture of my semen all over a print out of the post.

I don't see how they could still rely on slam dunks. Kotor 2 & NWN 2 were unique situations where a sequel was warranted, but Bioware declined (because they wanted to make their own IP) and referred Obsidian to the publisher instead. That's not gonna happen anymore.

You have to reunite with your Russian soul. In the end you travel to the fortress of evil. You discover your past encarnations, Putin, Obama and François Hollande. Obama will smile alot and actually do nothing, Putin will try to assimilate you to dominate the world and you have to press a quick time event to scape his evil russian gaze and François Hollande will sing LA-LA-LA-LA-LA in the background, you will find Angela Merkel, your long lost love, that will bring you to face your mortality.

You were Putin all along, you can join him or battle him while he is inside an exoesqueleton with dual miniguns. It doesn't matter your choice, in the end, you wake up on Crimea while a nuclear war is going on and you have to fight forever ukranians and russians that are on an endless battle on the abyss that is left to pay for your sins.

Obsidian probably isn't going to work with Bioware ever again mainly because that would inevitably mean working with EA, and EA is evil.

Feargus Urquhart has tried to work with EA in the past (Ultima), and EA refuses for the foreseeable future because as far as they're concerned Bioware is the only RPG studio they need.

I don't see how they are getting money for nothing. Even if the main cRPG guys won't work on this project, an MMO needs a lot of work, it is one of the most expensive genre to work on, so Obsidian has to put a lot of people on the project.

MMORPG is one of the most expensive genres to make, especially a fully-voiced AAA one (like TOR or TESO), but I don't really think making something like World of Tanks is a 100+ million dollar affair.

On one side, I too find these announcement sad, and on the other side, it's delightful to read the usual Bugsidian fanbois desperately trying to justify/rationalize this awful news.
I mean, besides we not getting a new RPG from them until a new announcement, how the fuck is it an awful news? id say its a "good for them, but we dont care" news.

I enjoy grilling Obsidian for this the same way I would enjoy grilling any of my bros over an embarrassing detail, but deep down I don't care much. The indie scene is fulfilling my gaming needs enough that I can go without caring for the triple-A bullshit Obsidian does to make ends meet.

Is anyone really rationalizing it, though? It's not exactly news that Obsidian was never flush with money and will pretty much jump on any deal they can get to stay afloat.
