Feargus set him up in a fake studio to live out his delusions of making video games. Ever since the accident, Feargus can't help but feel responsible for Sawyer's current mental state.

I wonder if Sawyer has realized that the computer Feargus gave him to make big boy games on is made of carboard

It sounds to me like the player is just doing some good-old detective work. And since there is no luminol test involved I'd say it's very much historical.
