It is almost impossible to make a race that someone can't connect to another already establish creature/race. In particular a humanoid.

No need for apologism here, Sawyer will happily admit that he's ripping off D&D (and has in the past). It's sort of the point.

I don't think they're will o wisps. they remind more of elementals mixed in with DA golems in a way.

\The xfarts/kobolds/etc sound nothing special.

the spider flayers sound cool though.

But let's give them different names just because. (Elves and Dwarves are Elves and Dwarves though so how's that for consistence)

Well considering Mindflayers are proprietary, there's a good reason for those. Also, kobolds have a pretty lame D&D reputation. Maybe this is a way to divorce those these guys from that bard monstrosity in NWN.

I am doing nothing of the sorts. I got no vested interest. I am just saying something that is true. Even if I worked long to make something that looked unique and had abilities/traits in some combination ever seen this would happen. Then someone would just conclude that what I made was a "Dwarf/Faery" or something. Since they then can conclude what I made had traits from two different things.

There is more leeway if you make something that ain't humanoid (excluding animal-hybrids.)

I'll be very disappointed if the combat isn't better than the IE games considering a lot of this design work is just treading water. Not to say I didn't expect that.

I'm surprised and impressed with how well-done those xaurip animations are. Definitely an A-priority creature.

Too bad this is the end of regular updates. Nothing to look forward to until mid-August now.

They are probably inhabiting some major dungeon in the game. Maybe a mine or something. Hard to tell, they could come up with anything.

Looks like Will-o-Wisps, Kobolds and Mind Flayers :P

Mind flayers are distinctive enough that you know a ripoff when you see one. If they copied only the look (appearance) that would be one thing but the description sounds exactly like mind flayers except with a justification to explain why they aren't the strongest power.

This sounds so.. uninspired.

Another kickstarter update and frankly I just don't give a shit anymore . it's been two years. I need significant
gameplay footage at this point. Nothing less. Until the demo comes out, I can't be bothered to give any more fucks.

Gives no fucks yet finds it necessary to post in this thread to talk about it.

Anyway
The following monsters are considered "Product Identity" by Wizards of the Coast and are therefore not part of the SRD:

beholder
gauth
carrion crawler
displacer beast
githyanki
githzerai
kuo-toa
mind flayer
slaad
umber hulk
yuan-ti

Josh's game will be "balanced", but utterly boring. The background art will be stellar, though.

Apart from the beholder, githzerai and githianki the list looks like they picked shit randomly from the monster manual to copyright

You know what's boring, discovering a tactic that allows you to crest and effectively coast through rest of the game.

Or monsters that were mostly uniquely D&D as opposed to general fantasy creatures. ie. They wouldn't be able to copyright dragons even if they wnated too. Of course, this doesn't stop other companies from ripping off even these monsters since M&M series has 'beholders' too thoguh slightly changed.

Josh's game will allow you to coast through the entire game on the starting difficulty because like most modern game designers his idea of "fun" is informed by pleasing the most people. It's cool if you think that's superior game design, but I think it's degenerate as fuck.

There's plenty of stuff more unique than those that isn't copyrighted
