Volourn describe to me how resting every fight or every other fight is functionally different than a cooldown that resets some of your spells after every or every other fight. :)
You shouldn't fucking rest after every fight, jesus christ. It's a D&D game. What does a DM do if you rest after every fight? He's going to fucking kill you and your group of losers and find some players that aren't retarded to play with.

Therefore the game should just have rocks fall on your head if you rest twice in, say, one real-time hour. There, problem solved. Jesus. I get so emotional when people put down the perfectly great Vancian system.

Use fucking wands or fucking scrolls or fucking potions or fucking combat feats or your fucking crossbow (or better, cantrip wand). I swear, you people suck at D&D.

Update 23 is up

We’ve hit the $3M mark now on Project Eternity and it’s on to add another Big, Big City to the game! We have less than 50 hours to go before the Kickstarter ends!

Before we announce some new stuff, some quick housekeeping is in order. If you are looking to add anything on to your pledge, check out our Project Eternity Add-On List page. This includes instructions on how to add on other options, as well as what our current offerings are.

Also to reduce some confusion in finding what each tier contains (we’re no longer able to update some of our posts on the Kickstarter site), we have a comprehensive list of the Project Eternity Reward Tiers up as well over on our Tumblr site.

Two last items, we’re hosting an AMA (Ask Me Anything) tomorrow on reddit. A number of Project Eternity staffers will be on hand at 10 AM PDT / 1 PM ET to answer your questions about the game! Then at 5 PM PDT / 8 ET, watch us on Ustream play some D&D in the studio!

Project Eternity the Documentary
The big news for the day is that we are adding a documentary covering the development of Project Eternity.

After getting a lot of requests to do a documentary, like the Double Fine Adventure, we started looking into it a couple of weeks ago. We talked about it more last week and decided that we don’t have a visual history of one of our games, even after almost ten years as a company. We felt it was something we should just do and do it without it being a new stretch goal.

So, we are happy to announce that we are going to include a stream, download, or physical copy of the documentary in all of our Kickstarter reward tiers. At the $20/$25 level you will be able to stream it, at the $35 level you will be able to download it, and at the $140 level (and physical tiers above) we will include a DVD / Blu-ray.

PE-DocumentaryOptions.jpg

We are not going to use the Kickstarter funding to do this however, since this is something we decided to do anyway. To us, it is a thank you to all of you for supporting us over the last month in making Project Eternity a reality and a historical record for everyone at Obsidian as well.

Project Eternity Playing Cards Add-On
As a fun new add-on for Sunday, we are now offering Project Eternity playing cards for $10. Designed by Scott Everts, one of our longtime technical artists who worked on Black Isle’s Infinity Engine games, and does a lot of work on board games, he designed this beautiful set which will feature characters and maybe critters (Kerfluffleupogus, Devourer of the Faithful anyone?) from Project Eternity. Check out the Project Eternity Add-On List on how to add-on items to your pledge. (Please note: Playing Cards only available to tiers including physical items. For digital tier folks, we’ll hopefully sell these as a future store offering.)

New Wallpaper
Last, but not least, we’ve received a lot of great feedback on the concept art for some of our first companions. So here is a new wallpaper with each of the companions that we have released so far. Might we be releasing more art soon? Stay tuned…

1920x1080 | 1920x1200

Tomorrow, we will be updating everyone with a schedule for Tuesday and another fun add-on. Oh and we have some plans for a crazy new reward tier for Tuesday morning.

Thanks everyone!

This argument is stupid.

The objective here isn't to create the most challenging game possible. The objective is to create a game that's similar to the Infinity Engine games, and you can't do that if you remove attrition entirely.

I'm not arguing over which system is the most faithful to IE games, I just didn't agree with the idea that "no attrition = dumb combat". As a matter of fact I'm ok with attrition as a mechanism, it can be fun to manage and I like the solution they came up with.

Not to mention that IE is hardly the paragon of game design. It is however one of the best we have had so far.

Maybe they forgot to add her or started drawing this before her name was revealed.

Insert clever insult here
So according to you attrition is the ONLY mechanism preventing a game from being a "brainless bashing" fest ? What if the game could end up being harder this way because each encounter is designed around the need to use all your ressources flawlessly instead of being able to save your bigger spells for harder fights ? what if all the fights were the "hard" ones ?

I'm not saying getting rid of attrition is the best choice, but it's pretty silly to assume it's automatically a very wrong move.
This very same argument came up when DAO's system was published. Your excuse came up and, as we all now know, turned out to be wrong. Because devs cannot resist putting in trash fights to pad out their games. Of course, your system would work if every encounter was a meaningful challenge meant to push your party to its limits - but that will never happen. In addition, one significant part of dungeoneering is the skill to conserve strength - which is completely removed if attrition is meaningless. Not even in KotC were each battle a carefully pre-planned fantastic encounter and that game revolved entirely around combat. It's foolish to hope for something even on the same level from PE, so this idea of removing attrition sounds bad.

But apparently attrition isn't going away completely, so yay for that.

Also, let's hope that there's no "WHICH COMPANION ARE YOU GONNA FUCK FIRST!?!" threads over at Obsidian forums.

Seriously. Everyone knows the biggest weakness of Bioware's was that you couldn't do all of them at the same time. DAO tried but it was obscure and even then you could only get two and an NPC.

Also, DAO really underserved those of us who wanted to find the tender bits of the female stone golem. I can only hope that Obsidian has the vision and courage to pick up the gauntlet.

The people who spam resta re gonan still spam rest b/c they gonan want their uber spells available. Those who spam rest are gonna wait as long a sit takes for cooldowns to be over as well. That's the fukkin' way the cookie crumbles.

This time I got to agree with the Volly. People will play they way they want and I am fine with that.
If anything things like "iron-man mode" is a good thing because then people can choose to go that route. While those who wants save/load with every single roll can do that if they want. With that i guess it would be cool to have things like this as options.

There is still a myriad of possibilities they could do with the combat system and the now funded Hard Core mode options.

That stasis game one of you posted, looks great, really hope PE ends up looking like that.
Anyway, I wish for a TOEE style combat system, with spells/combat/area interaction and highly focused on the tactical aspect.

I have to say, this thread is gold, many good points (the mega dungeon being plot and exploration driven for once). IMHO the 2nd city should have an arabian or a renaissance look with the first one being a mix of medieval and pre-industrial themes (a mix of Tarant and Caladon).
I know the game is going to be modfriendly, are they going to release modding tools? DA:O could have been great if only Bioware had let modders have easier to use tools.

I think we can now say it's quite probable that the game will reach its final stretch goal.
