Blizzard really are one of the worst developers. This kind of shit used to get played off as Blizzard high standards, but it’s just bullshit. They’ve been announcing projects and then cancelling them after years of stringing their audience along since Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. The only big difference here is they also pulled the trigger on a big rebranding push for an existing game as a sequel and now the whole reason behind that rebranding isn’t even happening.
Starcraft: Ghost was a really weird example of this because by all means, everything they were showing off of the last version of it looked pretty cool. By the end that game had a multiplayer mode that basically seemed to be a third person shooter RTS hybrid of Starcraft.
Warcraft 3 was also this, as this original RPG RTS hybrid version of Warcraft 3 is nothing at all like the Starcraft take they ended up turning it into after a few years of development and showing it off.
And then there’s stuff you don’t really hear much about before they can it, like Blizzard North’s Diablo 3, and that Diablo game they were making that was inspired by Dark Souls. Blizzard trying to make their own Dark Souls is maybe the oddest of them, given Activision was actively working with FromSoftware at the time. FromSoftware is also a developer that does contract work, if Blizzard did want a Diablo Dark Souls, by all means it would’ve been completely feasible for them to just hire FromSoftware themselves to make it. That Project Hades game was in development for around two to three years; FromSoftware could’ve given them a finished game in that amount of time.
Never heard of this. It could have been cool.
Anyway, it seems to me that Blizzard has simply lived on what it did in the good old days (Lost Vikings, Diablo I-II, Starcraft) from a reputation standpoint.
Then they hit the jackpot with WoW, making billions with the subscriptions and after that, it seems they just lost contact with reality.
They don't have any new ideas. They keep canceling projects.
Even Overwatch, their newest IP, came out just by chance, it was a fluke.
And they clearly don't know what to do with it.
I hope someone has been fired for this, but probably it didn't happen.
