I picked this up again and resumed Ivory Sanctum on core after a long hiatus. Got my ass kicked big time, but eventually got past it. Now in chapter 4 and the game is pretty interesting.

The pre-buffing, the insane amount of stat/level drain and need for restoration, etc, is truly dog shit though. After BG3 this feels like a slog despite being rtwp.

The best thing that happened was failing the crusade shit (happened the second I got out of Ivory Sanctum), which makes the game put it on auto. So glad to be rid of it. Dunno if they added that with a patch or what, but it was very welcome.

Bubble Buffs is near mandatory, extremely polished and entirely removes the pain of buffing.

Crusade Mode gets entirely trivial down the line, and is only important for items (that you can add with toy box) and some ending stuff anyway, so you could just put it on auto and add the items. It’s complete trash.

Allowing simple scripting would make this game (and some other games with extensive buffing) more enjoyable. Like simply creating a script for long term reinforcement (blur, mass greater heroism, energy resistances, stoneskin etc.) and a short term buff (like haste or a firebrand) could allow the player to just sit back for a while and enjoy the party moving in all directions instead of having some sort of a list of spells on the list and mind-numbingly applying them one by one. It shouldn't be hard to implement (with limited functionality - like just allowing players to run plain python script with defined companions and spells at their own peril, with the ability to stop the script at any time) and it would save a lot of player's time.

Besides, combat-wise it probably is one of the two best games I've ever played - it severely punishes unwillingness to learn (good luck fighting wild hunt without proper gaze protection), but rewards a formidable party with carefully chosen perks and spells with dead simple encounters. Learning certain enemy weaknesses and patterns always resulted in visibly easier combat - unlike in some games made by the preachers of 'balance'. For example, mandragora swarms became banal with massive doses of Tar pools and Slow. And I think I barely scratched the surface - for example, I didn't even think about initiative at all. Now I noticed, that if I gave my sorcerer Improved initiative, then it would be very hard to ambush my company when I had Dimension Door.

The game gets better and opens up once you finish the prologue and get your barony

1) If you'll get your barony (at ~5th level), you'll start experiencing choices and consequences this game has to offer. And there's a lot of them, most of them meaningful.
2) This game is centered around combat; and if you play blindly, paying the consequences (usually dire) of your own choices while developing your characters will get pretty entertaining. The combat changes greatly depending on perks your companions have, their classes, and whether you can exploit their strengths. This game also rewards knowledge of its systems better than any game I've ever played bar Underrail.
3) I had Octavia (19 Wizard / 1 Rogue) in my party at the end, but in hindsight it was suboptimal choice (I used her primarily for buffing, and she can't use abjuration school). The game can be easy on challenging, if you pick valid perks with standard companions without multiclassing.

What's your MC? That makes a huge difference early game. If you're an arcane spellcaster, that's probably what your issue is. This game is very unkind to spellcasters. FIFW, they aren't very useful outside of Grease, Glitterdusk, and Stinking Cloud anyway. You can easily play without one and just have an alchemist.

I followed recommendations to play on normal, and so far, aside from trying the Elk Temple too early, the game has been trivially easy. I am now mindlessly clearing through the Kobald cave.

I followed recommendations to play on normal, and so far, aside from trying the Elk Temple too early, the game has been trivially easy. I am now mindlessly clearing through the Kobald cave.
Hospitaler is an excellent choice of MC. Only real problem is being a bit feat starved. I highly recommend dirty trick feat line it will give you all the CC you need. Just stick with it. Early game can be rough but the game is absolutely worth it. Just use a kingdom management guide so you understand how things unlock and progress.

Buy your mercs early, while they're still cheap, and turn on the option to give everyone XP. That way, if you find you're not digging any of the story companions later on, you can swap them out for your meat puppets.

And yeah, give it some more time, the game's a slow burner but I loved it to bits for my part. The only genuine BG successor we're likely to see for a long time.

Intented difficulty as designed is Challenging I think. Kobold cave is really easy, Elk Temple is too if you know how to CC. Those boggard caves are the real challenge of Act 1.

I think its because it might have different AI behaviour. It does not disengage as easily. In RT they will potentially retarget every 6 seconds but not in TB.
