I just beat the shit of the Troll King at lvl7. I took almost no damage and I did not use the Laughing Man spell but ...

Buffs + Haste + Trollreaper + Devourer of Metal = Chop-Chop Time
Those two weapons are completely trivializing the fight therefore with them + Haste this fight would be doable even on Unfair difficulty.
On the other hand, the fight would be much more "interesting" at lvl6 and without the stuff above.

By the way, the Troll King has 23 AC and Tartuk has 35 AC (and several buffs) therefore the game is directing you in killing the Troll first.
Is it possible to kill Tartuk first? I couldn't.

Anyway some pointers for chapter 2 and Delgado's quest:
- first find the ranger companion, do the dwarf puzzle, get acid two-handed weapon,
- the ranger will tell you about 3 locations including the lone mage,
- visit the lone mage, fight some trolls, don't piss him off about dimwit, buy a bag of holdings,
- do some shit on the map, you will get an red alert about trolls rampaging your kingdom,
- go back to the lone mage, use the spiders to fight the trolls, find the mage and he will tell you about the trolls HQ,
- now take the ranger and the dwarf and go to the trolls HQ, expect large dungeon,
- full HP rest outside of the dungeon takes 1 day but inside it takes 3 days,
- somewhere along the way you will get the acid bow,
- rekt the Troll's king and at this point you are done with chapter 2,
- near the throne you'll find the mage's whip,
- go back to him and give him the whip and you will get the option to have him as an advisor.

It must be a left over from the cut content. This game is really rushed,it needed a few more months in the oven.
I dont get it, how is a sling not two handed? you can use a sling one handed?
According to the SRD, you can fire the sling with one hand, but need both for loading.
Usually solved by strapping the shield to your arm, allowing you to let go of it for the purpose of loading the sling. It has always been this way by RAW/SRD, including both PF and 3.5, but I haven't seen a single game or DM that I can remember enforce the supposed two-handedness of slings, although I know DM:s that (very reasonably) argue that you cannot use your shield while reloading, meaning that if you take Attacks of Opportunity, you don't benefit from your shield. Can't remember a game that implemented that either, but it should be easy enough for Owlcat to add that, if they feel the need.
BG allowed you to use a shield while wielding a sling.

[/spoiler]

I spammed summons and killed Tatuk first, so he could no longer use Haste on the Troll king. That was one of the most difficult fights for me.

Exact same sequence of events as I had. I noticed that yoh don't have Octavia with you, though. I wonder if it could be her conversation upon finding the whip that fucks up the entire thing.

Edit: Or is that her on the end there?

This is one of the game's flaws: Why do I have to level up companions I never use? I'm pretty sure I fucked up Octavia and Rog builds because I just click shit and I never used them in combat.

IIRC, all the IE games did, and so did NWN/2, ToEE, etc. I could be wrong, though. My point is that just because you arguably can't use your shield while reloading doesn't mean you can't have a shield equipped. For most intents and purposes, a sling is a one-handed weapon - you just need another free hand to load it, and that's exactly what shield straps are for.

Do you have any save shortly before picking up the whip? Because it would be interesting to see if Octavia is the issue, because if so, Owlcucks might want to know about it, and it'd be an easy way to avoid the bug with Bartholomew just by kicking her out for a single interaction and then take her back, even if it would involve wasting 3 or 4 days or something (because changing party takes a stupid long time even if all you do is kick people out).

Edit: And yeah, it's possible to kill Tartuk first, I always did. I snuck Ekun's animal behind pre-fight, and when it starts, troll king rushes us, but all my ranged characters come out of stealth, start sniping Tartuk and the wolf goes in to chew his neck. He usually went down pretty quickly. And then the troll started raping me.

is a sling different than a slingshot? I know there are slings people whip with one hand and a more accurate but maybe less powerful ones where people pull a band back between a wishbone shaped stick.
The bog standard D&D ones are the ones you see in the image Alienman linked. In the end, you have to live with the rules of the system. They don't always match real life.

For most situations in a computer game, the difference between one-handed when fired and two-handed when loading doesn't really come into play.
okay, I see the picture now, I can understand it being one-handed. I was thinking of the old tom sawyer type slingshot which honestly always felt sort of funny to me to imagine some dude in a robe back plinking dragons and armored hulks with marbles

Don't underestimate slings my friend. The Spanish conquistadores that went to South America chronicled usage of slings by Andean slingers; they wrote down that at a moderate range the impact and effect of a sling from right angle, launched without interruption, was similar to that of an arquebus shot. It could bend and damage breastplates, it would also break bone and lodge itself in flesh if the stone hit unarmoured part of the body. They noted even on armour the hit could be devastating in blunt trauma and a square hit to helmet could even cause death.

If I remember it correctly, Plato in Republic also mentioned slings when describing why a single athletic Athenian warrior would be able to defeat an army of any size. Since he would be well-trained, disciplined, and fit (unlike decadent and fat soldiers of lesser cities), said warrior could launch a stone, killing an enemy, then run away a few hundred meters from the opposing army, then launch and kill again. Rinse and repeat until the army is defeated. Thus, by using the timeless method of kiting, an Athenian man with a sling would be able to defeat an army of any size. That's what Plato thought. As we all know, video games have proved him right time and time again!

What do you mean by 'don't piss him off about Dimwit'? I didn't scold him for experimenting on the poor troll in my playthrough (rather encouraged it), but still, once I returned to his basement, Dimwit with 4 or so brethren had already surrounded the mage in a lethal scenario: I showed up, and they immediately beat him to a pulp. On the death's door, he told me about his whip and immediately died afterwards. Needless to say, I couldn't find where to use the whip (but thanks to codex I've been informed that it's a great supplement for Octavia-Regongar BDSM sessions; Bartholomew's legacy could live in their kinky spare time, I guess. The results of a life well-spent.)

If you take Dimwit side then you will not be able to recruit Delgado ... cause you hurt his feelings and something about his property. That's why you have to be neutral to what Delgado is doing to Dimwit.

I butthurted him about Dimwit a bit, but then let him keep Dimwit since what he was doing wasn't illegal (it was annoying that I couldn't say "I'm *making* it illegal *now*"), but it doesn't matter, he hasn't turned me down, he's just fucking *gone*.

I was thinking if you could just test it, because I can't actually report it to Owltard anyway. But ifnyou can't, I'll grab the save and test it hopefully before the weekend, by which time we'll have another three hotfixes and our Capitals will be reset and everyone taking continuous fire-damage.

Oh, I see now: that affects his desire to join you. But how do you prevent the deadly beatdown? I had visited Delgado long before any troll-related stuff popped up, and also went to his house immediately after someone told me to check up on him just in case (after trolls had started their reign of terror). Still, the mage was trapped in his basement and gibbed the moment I tried to intervene...

He is listed as "lawful evil" (no idea what this is based on), so I guess he's most valuable for evil runs.

Like everything else in this game:
Save-scumming.
Really, there's no secret to it. If the trolls get their hits in too fast or too strong, he's jam. You need to get in there ridiculously fast and murder the trolls in time, hoping that they hit weakly or miss a few times.

You cannot avoid the deadly beatdown, it's part of the main story (it's basically the quest which gives you the Trolls HQ location ... although you can find it by yourself just checking the map!?).
You have a couple of seconds time to react in order to save Delgado but it is possible. You need to prebuff, Trollreaper + summons and shit.
In the end it doesn't matter because in both cases (you save Delgado or he dies) he will tell you where the Trolls are. The only difference is that if he doesn't die then you can recruit him later as an advisor.

He is listed as "lawful evil" (no idea what this is based on), so I guess he's most valuable for evil runs.
Makes sense. He's clearly principled and lives an ordered life, and he values the rule of law. But he clearly has no qualms with committing evil acts in the pursuit of his research. I like that they have someone in the game that is Lawful Evil without being a cackling villain, and can be worked with to the point where even a Paladin might end up recruiting him, never giving it a second thought, especially with all the Lawful Good "monsters are evil, die!" which is bordering on the tiresome considering that "Good" (i.e. Neutral Good) is apparently all about being nice and extra forgiving and shit to the point of retardation. Alignments in the game are generally stupid, and I have no idea what muppet was in charge of them, so it's nice to hear that it's not all bad.

I was thinking if you could just test it, because I can't actually report it to Owltard anyway. But ifnyou can't, I'll grab the save and test it hopefully before the weekend, by which time we'll have another three hotfixes and our Capitals will be reset and everyone taking continuous fire-damage.

Honestly I don't want to do it. Sorry :)

As i said a few times, the game will be glorious after all the patches and DLCs are out! Playing it is like being in abusive relationship and having stockholm syndrome! It is just too good to walk way...:negative:

you are assuming the DLC won't break the game and require 75 hotfixes each release?

I am not retarded mate,of course i will wait for all the patches!
You wont, you wont have the patience and will day one purchase. We will cause we are codexers and we have issues...

I hear you. While I chose "neutral good" for my char, as in most games, you fare best that way, my choices are usually all over the place and wobble between lawful and chaotic all the time. Let's see whether I get that alignment sector on the char sheet completely stamped in red.
