I played the original, quite enjoyed it but found it too long-winded for me by around the 30-ish hour mark so quit. That said, I'd also a ton on my plate at the time and so I couldn't get immersed in it as much as I'd have liked too either. So, I picked up Royal on the cheap and will give it another blast over Winter (Russian NUKES! permitting of course). Looking forward to it actually coz I did like a lot about the game.

I really liked Persona 5, but going with the version that adds even more stuff into the mix seems like a weird direction to go if you ended up dipping out of the original release because of how long it was.

I'm hoping the newer content keeps it feeling fresh.

I did really enjoy it for that time too, I just hit a point where other stuff got on top of me and so I wanted to get it over with. That's when I felt it's slow pace more. I'm hoping that now all that other stuff has settled down, I can enjoy it more.

I have been watching a buddy play this and the changes that gut the difficulty are way more extensive than I ever would have thought. There's just so many things that add up. Even more busted DLC Persona (try 4x endure in one battle), buffs to baton pass, pair up attacks, way more gold and experience (buddy says +20% on Merciless over Hard whereas it used to be -60% but I haven't double checked that), quite a few other things I didn't get a grasp on yet but no doubt have an impact like the kid in Mementos. Merciless looks easier than OG Hard now.

How/where: Buying it on steam or the microsoft store, or using microsoft gamepass.

Which one to start with: Persona 5 Royal or Persona 4 Golden. I recommend Persona 5 since it has handcrafted dungeons and better combat.

Which Persona 5 is the best: There's only a single Persona 5 on PC, Persona 5 Royal. All the other Persona 5's you hear about are spin off games.

Which one is a proper JRPG: Persona 3 to 5 are JRPGs with social sim elements. Persona 1 is a first person dungeon crawler and Persona 2 is a more standard JRPG.

I've only played 5 and dabbled a bit in 3 and 4, and I think 5 is great. I've played over a dozen JRPGs but Persona 5 is the first one I actually enjoyed and finished (and that's notable, considering it's one of the longest as well.) I was ready to write off JRPGs as all shit until I got into Persona (and now the Shin Megami Tensei games.) So I would highly recommend it.

Tried it and the game had me run around with a gang of kids brainwashing people in their sleep like it's the bees knees. Uninstalled as a result. I'm curious though. Does the rest of the game run with that theme too, or does at some point the MC realize that maybe there's something wrong with mind controlling people?

Whether what they are doing is right or wrong is kind of the main theme of the game, yes.

Must've given up too early on it. Might go back to it eventually.

It lampshades it but doesn't condemn it in any way, the added Royal semester makes it even more ridiculous

Half the social links revolve around you going in the metaverse and "correcting" people. The game's message is that it's ok if the party does it

Yeah, when you think about it Persona 5 main theme of "stealing hearts" is kinda dark and a questionable thing. The game mostly justify it through a "fight against the system lens" at least in the main plot. Most of the villain are people in power holding significant influence and would never see justice in any normal circumstances, at least the way it is setup in the game. Even something like Kamoshida (nightmare coach) is a common narrative plot in Japan media that take upon social issue. There are arc/part that is not about that tho such as Futaba's.

That being said, in og P5 it is implied that the power to do so doesn't necessarily mean a "good" thing. Accepting Igor's offer at the end of P5 resulted in practically "bad" ending where you pretty much abuse the power for personal gain and fame. And then Akechi in og P5 once again is deconstruction of what the Phantom Thieves is doing and how the power to tamper with human psyche is not really something that is benign.

There are of course value dissonance between Japan society where the game was originally made for versus the west and thus why the topic is not discussed further, namely "would free will above all else, even if it harms society, a good thing?"

Thoughts after 9 hours:
-very strong feeling about dropping this. I had told myself I'd give the game a fair shake and see how I feel after finishing the opening story arc (Kamashida/gym teacher). I thought for sure that would run maybe 4 or 5 hours but the story has found ways to stretch it out more and more such that I've wrapped up the story arc in 9 hours. Granted, there was zero grinding involved, I did have to restart one since I dumbly got ambushed by a red aura patrol
-combat at this point isn't particularly exciting, often feeling like playing rock paper scissors and finding which the enemy is weak to
-I don't like how equipping new items don't reflect cosmetically in battle
-I finally feel like I'm not being held by the hand after Gym teacher, as I'm now allowed to explore the town after school hours. So this is making me want to keep playing
-I got bad Dead Space 2 flashbacks once I saw how interacting w/the cardboard box inundates your inventory with items and $ so I skipped that. Gonna go spend my $ now on what I can find
-Soundtrack is prob my favorite thing, some tunes reminding me of those from Yakuza. Still, thus far I far prefer Dragon Quest 11 and Yakuza 7 over this. Maybe the characters will grow on me more, but the world feels pretty soulless compared to those 2 games

if you are not feeling it after playing first act or two you are most likely not going to enjoy it more later

I liked Yakuza 7, so no question here, but did you really prefer DQ XI over Persona 5? Why?

Soulless compared to DQ11, literally the textbook exemplar of "General Rules Governing A JRPG"? Guess anything's possible in taste.

But yeah, once you beat the first boss and done some exploring you've seen how the game works, like it or not.

I'm almost up to where the beginning sequence takes place and I have to say that I'm starting to dislike the writing more and more now. It's still much more palatable than something like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (haven't tried the other ones because of my bad experience with it) but it's a major step down from P4. However gameplay wise it's much better.

Melee and Ranged weapons all have dedicated skins to them. Also that cardboard box which gave you PTSD hold a bunch of outfits to equip that change your "armour". I would say that the Catherine outfit for Ann is a must.

Thanks for asking. I'd say I'm enjoying the pace of the game more now post Gym teacher, but it bothered me how the pace of the story get being interrupted by needing to go back to the "real world." Not being able to explore the world and "meet" NPCs was also quite bothersome. I'm not sure if that's going to change much now that I'm starting Act 2.

DQ 11 was my first DQ game and I'm also someone with very little to any JRPG experience. I did grow up on the Pokemon handheld games so I'm familiar with menu based combat. But I loved the "adventure" feel of DQ 11. I do regret playing that one on "Hard" as I did have to do some grinding durign the very late game. And I found that what I enjoyed most about the experience was the narrative, the characters, that every NPC had a unique line of dialogue. This piqued my OCD as I'm someone who likes to see what NPCs have to say and it boggled my mind that the devs made the effort to give each NPC a line of unique dialogue, and I was stunned once I saw that this also was affected by world states. Complete a major quest for a town, and each NPC would have completely new dialogue. Crazy! I remember the translation being fantastic, often funny, and I loved the gamut of emotions that game explored through your companions. The pacing was quite fast and kept flowing through different beats. Persona 5 seems like it transitions quite slowly. I get it Ryuji, you're sore about how you got booted from the track team and yes I know you hate the gym teacher. Anne feels sorry for Shiho, ok, what else?

some tunes I'm really enjoying:

Persona 5 Royal
that. i'll look into it.
Go for original Persona 5 instead of Royal. It has a much more balanced and challenging gameplay.

Only go for Royal if you want a pure graphic novel. Royal botched the difficulty completely, it's Hard mode is equivalent to original Easy. You'll max all social links with no effort halfway through first playthrough, and the dungeons are pointlessly easy. The only thing challenging are the bosses which ironically are broken for the opposite reason and became overly difficult.
