Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
As someone who mained a tank in Deadfire on the first playthrough I can attest that they're more deadweight here than in the first game - even when paired with useful multiclasses like Chanter.
Nonsense, tanks are viable

Viable, sure. But IMO a bit of a waste of a character slot, given how easily you can make characters that are tanky, but have other functions also.

My favorite “tank” is Fury/Ascetic with Nature’s Terror. Also a good example that off-tanks are more fun and carry their Weight better

Firstly, your opinion on what is good is kind of clouded by the fact that you're playing on Veteran.

Secondly, everything is viable in Deadfire. But tanks are neither as fun nor as good as in the first game.
Yeah cos I never played POTD of course I am just imagining what it is like

Define tank

Dedicated tank = specialized in soaking damage

Off-tank = Decent at soaking damage while doing other job

Dedicated tanks that do almost nothing else are very good in PoE, less so in Deadfire. That's all Haplo and me are saying.

Ehm, no? It's a qualitative difference that in PoE1, tanks that do nothing but tank and maybe some minor additional stuff besides are very good, while in Deadfire you should build people to primarily do other stuff and then soak as a side-thing.

Well I didn't mean that building a character that just sits there and does nothing but stand behind a shield is effective, like duh

On a tank I prefer to have an utility weapon ie the club from captain Feargus (more engagement) or the mace from Bardatto treasury (debuff resistence and heals you).

I didn't even mind that my Eder can't do much more than soak damage tbh. I played casters and I willfully refused to learn how to make minmax other roles. My Pallegina wasn't that great either but I still brought her along for class diversity.
You're insane. Deadfire's biggest problem is that it is too easy, even on PotD. Can't imagine what a cakewalk it must be on Veteran. Don't play this game on lower difficulties
POTD is just inflated stats, the game isn't harder it's just more monotonous
It starts that way in Tutorial Island but soon enough PotD is more of a guarantee against overlevelling.

Tank: defender of the party. In general a welcome role.

What I'm arguing is that focusing purely on tanking in Deadfire is a waste. But for example Eder as a Swashbuckler is fine - he can also deal solid damage.

What I consider a real waste of a party slot, are single class Fighters, Paladins or Fighter/Paladin multiclasses.

A tank that only soaks damage is a waste in a loooot of RPGs because there is no threat mechanic. I've never had a (singe-class) fighter in my parties in PoE, so I can't speak for them, but a paladin tank is a waste imo.

I like Eder as SC Fighter, mainly because Fighters have excellent progression through ability tiers. Stances at tier 2, improved recovery and tier 3, vigourous defense at 4, unbending at 5, and so on, each of these improves him hugely so I prefer to move up a tier faster.

In a party... that's not necessary.
Solo... that's not possible, at least on serious difficulties.
