I really don't care about the ship stuff, there are more important issues. The ship combat sounds gimmicky and mini-game-y and will probably get boring or repetitive after the second ship fight. I hope we can opt out of those.

There's a picture (part of a scripted interaction) in one of the updates that provides several options concerning ship-to-ship combat: board, open fire, flee. Some of these seem to depend on the type of ship/crew/inventory/skills.

So it will probably be an option most of the time - barring fights that are integral to the story (I'm guessing it will be similar to F:NV - you getting ambushed by rival factions when you progress far enough).

So how is the ship stuff?

I guess you'll have to check on the Obsidian forums or SA as apparently it's been dismissed as "insignificant" by folks here (wtf).

BTW, no new player portraits in this update. But a bunch of mysterious new companion portraits have been added, including this large one labelled "Mirke":

And five non-descript-looking small ones:

Also, a ton of new painted NPC portraits.

Mirke definitely has to be a sidekick. She has a small and a large portrait like the other sidekicks.

I could be wrong, but it looks like crew members are going to get smaller painted portraits for the ship management screen. It would make sense for Vektor to join your crew after you complete the Poko Kohara quest.

Mirke looks like she might be the helmsman of your ship. I doubt they've added more sidekicks.

Great, another Orlan I will need to put to sleep.

I am excited for the crafting/enchanting. That should make caster parties much more bearable. The magic missile scroll did some good work.

They better let me be evil in this game or it's a no buy for me, PoE was very tame in terms of evil choices and even when you had them they still felt like a mildly mean old man trying to school someones attitude, I mean especially coming from Baldurs Gate 2 where you had the option to kill or be a jerk to everyone, especially to your companions. PoE is a disgrace when it comes to be a jerk department and your choices feel like PG13.

Played with the added ship mechanics a bit. Here are a few screenshots:

The ship management screen (this replaces the old Caed Nua screen)

The combat is all about positioning and knowing when to turn/advance/fire off a round of cannonballs. Ship type, equipment, and crew composition will definitely play an important role.

It seems like it could be a fun little addition, and will probably be optional most of the time.

The overland map seems better on every update.

The map itself seems more polished and alive, many ships hanging around and a sweet day night effect.

Also, overall better performance, altought u can still see the huge difference from main areas and little ones (like ship deck), where in the latter the game is incredibly smooth

Seems like they added an extra second of recovery after attacking with melee weapons, which means they slowed down the combat even more.

I said that I don't care about it and wish we could skip it (because I think it'll be a tacked-on and repetitive mini-game) literally 2 pages ago.

The naval combat being handled entirely through static CYOA screens looks pretty boring, to be honest, and will likely get old really fast. They should've looked to a game like FTL for inspiration. Despite the low-budget assets it was working with, it did a really good job in making its ship-to-ship battles feel hectic and visually exciting while still letting you micromanage everything (and funnily enough, it's also RTwP).

The naval combat seems totally skippable tho, considering that u have to go into another ship to trigger it
