It's not being edgy, it's being realistic. I never understood people who watch Let's Plays either, apart from watching just a bit for informational purposes to see if you are going to like a game or not, or when you don't have access to an interesting game you might enjoy because console exclusivity (I've watched a Let's Play of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem and Shadow of Destiny). Sooooo, yeah, I'd rather be playing than watching.

Real nerds are too busy actually playing the tabletop campaigns and don't have the time or the desire to watch "Critical Role" play one for 3 hours straight or go to conventions.

There is currently an argument in the pnp RPG community exactly along these lines.
It's absurd and unnecessary.

I don't care about CR in the slightest, I've never watched any of their videos, I prefer to play DnD rather than watch it. But I understand why others do like to watch it.
This doesn't impact any of you here in any way, so why be so edgy about it?

Letting people do what they enjoy in peace, alone, while not bothering anyone else?

Might as well ask why gay people have been getting free helicopter rides for millenia.

It does affect us though because it's our money Obsidian is blowing out on marketing campaign featuring these idiots.

They might have even saved money, if they hired all of them for their voice acting, group discount stuff?

I doubt it cost them a significant amount of money, aren't most of the CR people already voice acting for the game? And they do have an undeniably large audience, so why shouldn't they use them for marketing?

You guys are just butthurt Obsidian isn't pandering specifically to you more. Oh no, you backed a game on Fig, you're so special!
(You and thousands of other people, dude. And shockingly, many of them probably watch CR, or even *gasp* Let's Plays on Youtube.)

To say nothing of the potential for increasing sales of the game, which is kind of the whole point of marketing.

I have never watched Critical Role and never plan to, but Obsidian growing their audience is a good thing: more revenue, more interest, and more opportunities for us to bemoan the impact casuals are having on future games.

According to this guy, this scene in PoE1 featured multiple Critical Role members:

So I'm replaying Pillars of Eternity, this time after I watched Critical Role and turns out there is an interaction between Matt, Liam and Sam in there.

So yeah the relationship was kind of always there.

"Critical Role is huge , they are like massive celebrities with millions of followers"

"It was a good deal because Critical Role would be cheap"

Try to pick a narrative and stick to it.

Why though, if both are possible at the same time?

(also lol @ "Everyone is an evil SJW and is constantly weaving fake news narratives against me and other normal people!!!!")

Also wow, they are genuinely popular. Hundreds of thousands of views per video, some of the most popular ones on Felicia Day's entire Geek & Sundry YouTube channel. Who knew. And we're talking 4 hours-long videos. Obsidian did good here. Hopefully part of their deal is uploading a Deadfire video to the channel, because there's nothing there yet: https://www.youtube.com/user/geekandsundry/videos

Most of the truly bad voice acting in PoE was female.

Adding a couple of actual professional voice actresses might be a big help? Though I doubt Obs can afford to pay Laura Bailey to do much more than a minor character.

The CR connection's been there since the first game, Codex. Why the outrage? Mercer voiced Edér and Aloth; O'Brien, Riegel and Jaffe all played some minor roles in PoE. Obsidian's also allowed CR to use their OST on their streams. CR have even mentioned both kickstarters multiple times on-stream as well, iirc. Their fanbase really is huge; the collab was a good call on Obsidian's part.

There must always be something to be outraged about :obviously:

For some reason, names of some DLCs are exposed on SteamDB:

  • 38 minutes ago 812280 Added name – Pillars of Eternity II: Scavenger Hunt - Cutthroat Cosmo
  • 38 minutes ago 812270 Added name – Pillars of Eternity II: Scavenger Hunt - Sails of Berath
  • 38 minutes ago 812260 Added name – Pillars of Eternity II: Scavenger Hunt - Captain's Banquet
  • 39 minutes ago 812250 Added name – Pillars of Eternity II: Scavenger Hunt - Cannons
  • 39 minutes ago 812240 Added name – Pillars of Eternity II: Scavenger Hunt - Cloak of Berath
  • 40 minutes ago 812230 Added name – Pillars of Eternity II: Scavenger Hunt - Golden Ring
  • 40 minutes ago 812220 Added name – Pillars of Eternity II: Scavenger Hunt - Cinder Bombs
  • 41 minutes ago 808890 Added name – Pillars of Eternity II: Scavenger Hunt - Scavenger's Lantern
  • 42 minutes ago 812210 Added name – Pillars of Eternity II: Scavenger Hunt - Stinky Pete
  • 43 minutes ago 812200 Added name – Pillars of Eternity II: Scavenger Hunt - Grog

I think this means they are somehow available to get (via codes or gifts for example).

Scavenger Hunt? I wonder those secret codes were actually redeem codes for these DLCs?

It seems pretty obvious that this is related to the codes that have been popping up in the tweets and photos
