I think that their pitch is shit and the main cause of trouble and butthurt.
The pitch was perfect by KS standards. It gave them a million bucks in 24 hours and the Codex's enthusiasm was at its peak. Then, instead of driving people into pledging frenzy with AWSUM stretch goals, they posted a dry list written by a 12-year old, which presented the very first details in the most negative way, and went to bed. They hit the first stretch goal - and not a word from Obsidian. Like, seriously, guys? Learned nothing from Fargo?

The lie part comes from advertising on BG, IWD, PST and then putting guns in.
First of all, it's not a lie because both BG, IWD, and PST and the guns are in the same video. It's not something they added later. Second, they've never said or implied that it's gonna be generic fantasy like FR. They promised:

"... memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, ... the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and ...the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment."

There is one thing that I don't like about fantasy, it's elves. And there is one thing I really hate in games, that's muskets. You either go machine guns and laser weapons or stay medieval. If they can pull something good out of it, good to them but it's not something I am fond of.

Now why didn't you start with this one? So your are butthurt because they put guns in your precious little game. That sucks man. Now excuse me, I go and play some Might and Magic with my laser pistol wielding paladin.

Are you really that retarded? Gun's are for settings of the future. Because, if it's not my paladin will use a rocket launcher.

Actually, Feargus was up in the comments at the time and thanked everyone. And they mention it on the Kickstarter Page.

Not the same as doing a proper update, which will be reposted everywhere. Updates should sell, not state the obvious - we hit another goal, check the list for the next one.

1. 2. They hit the first stretch goal - and not a word from Obsidian. Like, seriously, guys? Learned nothing from Fargo?

1. Now that's comedy. Am I the only one who believes that people actually fund the project, because of MCA and TC. But you know if you don't trust me you can make your own kickstarter pitch with Joe the Plumber and rake in all that Jew gold.

2. That's precisely the reason for silence, or do you think that they have nothing to say?

The lie part comes from advertising on BG, IWD, PST and then putting guns in.

1. And then they teased the elfs and social housing, because nothing says Not generic better than elfs.

I am just stating my opinion. If you don't want to hear it, I heard the ignore button is still there.

Actually firearms appeared in Europe in 14th century (late Medieval) - small, personal versions were known to be used in e.g. Hussite Wars in early 15th century (1419-1434 to be precise). As the technology advanced they slowly gained in popularity - they were used by Conquistators and in all major conflicts in Europe from that time. Only in 17th century they become the staple of advanced militaries in Europe and Colonies.

Let's also mention huge-arse cannons and bombards used by both Turks and Byzantines during Siege of Constantinople (1422)

I think adding guns/firearms could be a great idea - provided that there was some great mechanics around it.

I think having them set a stretch goal of 4 or 4.5 millions or whatever it's necessary for them to say "with this amount of funding we'll be able to give you a game of the same scale as BG2", will create the same drive that was going on when they presented the project. That drive of "yes! I need this! we need to have it".
And for those who have been following KS wasting money on KS you have already seen some pretty impossible things to happen.
One can't deny that BG2 is one of the most beloved games, even on the codex, independently of the game's worth. It's a carrot that should be used IMO.

Worst case scenario, they don't reach it. But (hopefully) pledgers will look at it and say "well, they didn't reach it, but it's still close -- as in it's still close to a BG2 experience.
Best case scenario, no need explaining what happens. The game will have countless bugs which will take an Eternity to fix *ta dun psss*

The tricky part is setting middle tiers that give some security that backers will not back off.
One of the problems with the current ones may have been setting small step goals. While it does make sense, it has some drawbacks, the amount of bitching that went on the codex tends to show otherwise.
I have not been lurking on OEI forums, so I don't know what type, if any, butthurt happened there.

Also, set romances at 3.5 millions. That will make the money flow :)

Feargus isn't a nobody. He is the face of Obsidian and it is an Obsidian's project, not MCA's or Sawyer's.

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

First, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having some kind of headquarters to store gear, tinker with upgrades, and keep party members in one place. Like that inn in BG2, for example. Just because the word house invokes images of Oblivion and Skyrim, doesn't mean it's gonna be a place where you keep your bobble-head collection.

Second, Arcanum had elves and orcs and even skeletons and despite the fact that some elves lived in tree houses, there was nothing generic about Arcanum, so why not wait and see before jumping to conclusions?

Feargus actually embodies everything what is wrong with this KS. Not understand what your audience wants, poor planning, lame stretch goals and etc. He is a Fat Cat and not the one in the trenches, like MCA or TC. Nobody cares about his ramblings. Watching their pitch video I really wanted MCA and TC to speak more. I would like to see someone who wanted Feargus to speak more.

And then they teased the elfs and social housing, because nothing says Not generic better than elfs.

Yes, but if your are recreating Arcanum you can't say that it's an original setting. And if you advertise on IE and are recreating Arcanum...

It's not that I can't use wiki, it's just that I am not excited to find one in a game. I am excited when I find flaming sword in a setting with magic, because that does make sense to me. Or when I find meteor sword in AoD. But when you find musket +5, that's little bit absurd...

What if VD includes a musket in AoD.
Tell me, how would that make you feel?

Geez, this guy just goes on and on and on and

I certainly would like to see a more 'half-way' setting than stock fantasy, of course Arcanum did it in its own way but there are plenty of different ways to do it.

I hope they don`t show any screenshot before KS ends, they might trow away some important backers, better let us imagine things then trow it in our face.

It only serves to prove how absurd are all those meteor flaming swords in the first place. I'd rather have a game that for once puts priority on utility over stats pulled out of devs' arse, rather than the other way round.

Primitive guns is pretty interesting to me, suggests we aren't going to get a boring medieval europe + magic rpg like Dragon Age or Skyrim. They might actually mix things up. Guild Wars 2 certainly feels fresher for having some steampunky technology thrown in.

That's a valid point of view, but I prefer meteor flaming swords.
