Ross's lack of skill and over-reliance on cheats to complete games led me to stop watching his videos all together. When every discussion on gameplay turns into a tirade about unfairness then either he manages to pick the hardest games out there or he his trying to rush through them as quickly as possible.

I haven't watched anything from Ross in years, but i'll make an exception for Gothic episode :obviously:

Hope he doesn't get filtered too badly.

He is generally bad at gameplay, that is why adventure point and click stuff makes for his best episodes.

For me his best episodes were about crappy third person shooter warhammer knock off and another about snow mobile racing game. And yeah he sucked in both and cheated. But they were shitty broken games to be honest. The first one i even played many years ago and it was as bad as in the video.

Notice how he approaches combat. No maneuvering, no dodging, no use of different attacks, just trying to bruteforce everyone with LMB clickfest and tanking, and then he complains about game being too hard

I haven't seen the video yet but it takes time to learn Gothic. Especially for 'muricans.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
It can be hard to tell because many of the games he plays are either very old, very obscure or very broken (sometimes all 3), I can't blame him for cheating at something genuinely broken like Clans or looking up solutions for 90s adventure games, but I think for me it comes back to his Revenant episode, where he somehow concluded he has to cheat to beat it, and still complains about difficulty while cheating. So I have a good comparison, having played Revenant, it's not a very difficult game, you can beat it by doing whatever and learning the game while playing it, without deep understanding of how the game's systems work or abusing anything. I mostly like his videos, but I wouldn't rely on his opinion on whether a game is difficult.
I haven't played Gothic in probably close to 20 years and I'm hardly an expert at it, but I don't have to watch the video to know that he'll struggle with it more than necessary, he's just like that for some reason :popamole:

His playthrough of Revenant is a textbook example of his limitations. This is particularly apparent when he attempts RPGs, usually ARPGs.

He cheats during Revenant because he **never** uses magic, or any ancillary skills. Your protagonist is supposed to be a jack-of-all-trades. You are expected to learn spells and use other mechanics besides melee combat.

His playthrough of Dunegon Seige is another good example: Again, only warriors, even respecs mages, clerics and rogues to be fighters. Dude can't handle anything more than sword'n'board.

It's a similar limitation all the way down.

I like that he shows a side of gaming I personally ignore - save scumming, using glitches and whatnot. It adds more entertainment for me when he talks and does stuff like that. To be fair he doesn't do a just review of the game like this but I doubt that was ever his point.

"You played and enjoyed the game differently than I did, therefore your opinion is invalid."

Ross is genuinely bad at games. He's an entertainer first and foremost, but his opinions about gameplay, mechanics and whatever can be safely ignored.

You're not watching him to learn history (there's better channels about that) gameplay details or indepth mechanics (there's better channels about that), you watch him because he's a rather amusing American man ranting on the Internet while surviving with his schizo Polish gf.

It's not the matter "playing and enjoying differently", it's not even insulting him: Ross is genuinely terrible at games. Cheating, checking guides and lowering difficulties do not impact on his value as an entertainer whatsoever.
